We were properly advised by our server that their new menu had smaller portion sizes, yet my wife & I ordered too much food. (The portion sizes are still generous). Quality was good on average, though there are a couple of dishes that we didn't care for, from a personal taste thing. There's not any other restaurant that is open during the early part of the week, so this is the best choice. Best to come here before going upstairs to see a movie, but one can dine here without the movie experience. Good setting and lobby both in front & upstairs is a treat to see.

I read through some of the other reviews, and Coco seemed to be all style and good looks without the girl-next-door niceties and sassy-smart personality you'd find in someone you'd want to take home to Mother. Everyone seemed to come to consensus that Coco was a hot date, if somewhat inattentive and snotty at times. Was Coco really like that? Not on our first date. She was dressed elegantly, done up like a 1920s art deco doll. She was smart, attentive and knowledgable and made a lasting impression with her food. We ordered a ceviche to start, accompanied by well-made cocktails. The martini I ordered was dry and up, the Moscow Mule was fragrant and a good companion to the ceviche. Then came a duck for two. A half-duck with mandarin and middle eastern spices, a new take on duck a l'orange. Coco described her duck with winter vegetables, but my guess was that she forgot to change winter for spring as I saw asparagus, spinach and french beans; all of which are spring vegetables. The duck fat fries had to be the hot make-out session of the night, with potato wedges that had crisp and flavorsome exterior and fluffy soft interiors. All in all, I'd take Coco out for a few more nights, but she's quite a stylish lady and I'm sure she'll be happy with more suitors and attention from other leading men if given the choice.

It is great for a nice dinner to sit down and enjoy a meal. We ordered quite a few appetizers and entrees to share as this was our last night here. We started with some raw oysters, smoke fish croquette ($9.50 each), focaccia bread ($9) with artichoke dip ($12), seafood chowder ($30), and the beef tartare ($28). Our favorites were probably the oysters and the focaccia bread with the spread. The oysters were fresh and we enjoyed trying them all. The focaccia bread went great with the spread as the bread was warm and the spinach dip was a nice cool dip to match. The bread was also perfect to dip in the chowder. For the entrees, we ordered a side of green beans ($14), fettuccine ($27|$37), Lumina Lamb Backstrap ($19 per 100g), and the Japanese wagyu ($85 per 100g). Our favorite out of everything was the wagyu. The lamb was delicious but it's not comparison after you have a bite of the wagyu. The Wagyu was cooked perfectly. The meat was not too thick of a piece to cut. The green beans were a great side to go along with the meal. The almonds added a nice crunch to the green beans. Overall, we enjoyed our meal very much. We felt that this restaurant was a perfect way to end our stay in Wellington!

This was by far our favorite meal in Wellington and the service was super attentive and friendly…read more We never went without food or drink or the staff asking how things were going. To start with the appetizers the Oysters with the vinaigrette were the best I had in New Zealand we ended up ordering more because they were that good and the ceviche was excellent as well. Our daughters lemon prawn pappardelle pasta was fantastic she soaked up every last bit with the delicious bread. Both my wife and I ordered fish which were both prepared well and delicious. If I had to pick one restaurant to go back and visit in the North Island this would be it. The ambiance was quaint and comfortable with a fun vibe. We would highly recommend Ortega and hope to visit again.

They let us stay long enough for dessert and smiles, and a lil chit-chat with the bartender. All the staff seemed to love their jobs, the environment was warm and inviting, and I always look forward to going again when in Wellington. Go! You won't regret it.

I requested a Vegan option and without missing a beat, the friendly staff had many possibilities instantly available. I chose the soup of the day (potato and pea with fresh foccacia slices) and added some gourmet olive oil and fresh ground black pepper from the condiments cabinet and what was superior turned to magic. The soup convinced Me of Bongusto's commitment to quality so I went back to ask if a Vegan pasta option was available. A cannelini beans and sun-dried tomato ravioli with crudaiola sauce and toasted pinenuts was offered and I immediately ordered it. I asked if some green salad leaves could be brought out to accompany the ravioli and the waitress quickly appeared with freshly washed spinach! Absolutely creamy and delicious ravioli! Bongusto makes traditional Italian meals that are both meat, eggs and cheese based as well as Vegan. Pizzas slices are available but are all pre-made and then heated. Bongusto would move a blue ribbon notch ahead with made to order pizzas from a wood-fired oven. A non-Vegan selection of desserts is displayed in the glass cases. Tea, juices, kombucha, barista coffee, Italian beers and sparkling waters are also available. The one quirky thing about Bongusto is its location and decour. It's in a common mini strip mall and the interior design is a nice attempt at showcasing Italy, but when all is said and done, the location and the interior don't match the excellence of the all-star Italian chef who owns this gourmet sensation and for this reason, the dining experience is ultimately compromised. It would be most appreciated if Bongusto moved into a well-appointed space with a wood-fired pizza oven and a complete Vegan menu including desserts that compliment the clear cullnary creativity of its most professional Italian chef/owner. Check the Bongusto website for daily specials and by all means travel out of the Wellington centre to visit this superb Italian eatery.
