Picton Village Bakkerij - Sausage roll and Moroccan lamb pie

If you couldn't tell by the name, it's Dutch influenced. We dropped in on a Wednesday (around 11:45am) and there was a lot of people coming and going. There's a few tables to sit at outside but that's it. Service was friendly and patient. A variety to choose from including hot pies, scones, quiches, sandwiches, pastries, buns and breads. Their award winning carrot cake ($5.50 NZD small) looked good. The drink menu is small and off to the side. - Flat white ($4.00 NZD large) - pretty mediocre but expected given you're not getting this made at a coffee shop. - Moroccan lamb ($4.90 NZD) - this is one of their "out of the ordinary" pies. Moroccan lamb sounded good but the sauce and seasoning didn't combine well with the lamb. However, the crust was excellent. - Sausage roll ($2.00 NZD) - the sausage itself was a bit too salty but the pastry was flaky and had a good texture. - Roast beef, relish & cheese ($6.90 NZD) - came with lettuce, roast beef, cheese, tomato, red onion and tomato relish. The kaiser bun it came on was fresh and had a great chewy bite. The roast beef slices could have been fresher but the tomato relish was pleasant. - Cherry almond tart ($4.80 NZD) - filled with sweet dark cherries and sweet ground almond filling. This one is one of their award winning pastries. This was good. I really liked the fruit on top. Solid bakery to grab a few things to snack on. Really close to the pier so a perfect stop before you head off.

It was 2:45pm and my husband walked in with his parents and nephews. He came back with some cold pizzas, one lukewarm pizza, and a brownie. I asked where was the coffee and he said the lady said, "No" when he asked. He shared the lady was rude and rushed. I was confused! They didn't close until 3:30pm, so what what was the issue!? I walk in and see the same lady being extremely polite to the customers who arrived after 3:00pm. She served them coffees, heated their pies and pizzas. It was very sad because my husband and his family are Indian. The other customers were not, so it makes you wonder if that was the reason this experience was horrible. I really wish our niece and nephew didn't experience this! And I highly recommend they learn how to be BETTER to ALL of their customers. Last thing, my husband speaks English so there was NO miscommunication.

Where do I start? Big plate size slices? Good choices? Walk-by convenient? Friendly staff? Oh and…read moreit's good pizza. At $5 a slice, I wish I could go here for every late night munchie. Every single bite is crispy. Seriously. Every single bite. When you get to the crust, it's chewy and doughy and perfect. Toppings are too good. The pepperoni is evenly distributed and tasty. The mushroom is a veggie dream with savory mushrooms and spinach, you can't feel guilty with these two healthy options. I gotta mention the four cheese. Wow. It was salty and cheesy and with the thin crust, there's no stringy cheese dangling from your bites. Each bite was filled with flavor and there are sesame seeds by the crust, which was so different to see. The pizza is nice, thin and crispy. Surprising to come from a small stand in Courtney Place they are open late (11pm) to fill that pizza need every one has in there life. It was so good that in my short span of a few days in Wellington, I couldn't resist and managed to get here twice.

The menu was limited and their slices both jumbo sized and very expensive, but they looked appealing so I splurged on one. I must say it is the most American pizza I've tasted on this side of the world; the fluffiness of the crust was proper. The four cheese I got also had some tasty sesame seeds. They offer a slice card for repeat customers, which if I were there I might get.

We were properly advised by our server that their new menu had smaller portion sizes, yet my wife & I ordered too much food. (The portion sizes are still generous). Quality was good on average, though there are a couple of dishes that we didn't care for, from a personal taste thing. There's not any other restaurant that is open during the early part of the week, so this is the best choice. Best to come here before going upstairs to see a movie, but one can dine here without the movie experience. Good setting and lobby both in front & upstairs is a treat to see.

I read through some of the other reviews, and Coco seemed to be all style and good looks without the girl-next-door niceties and sassy-smart personality you'd find in someone you'd want to take home to Mother. Everyone seemed to come to consensus that Coco was a hot date, if somewhat inattentive and snotty at times. Was Coco really like that? Not on our first date. She was dressed elegantly, done up like a 1920s art deco doll. She was smart, attentive and knowledgable and made a lasting impression with her food. We ordered a ceviche to start, accompanied by well-made cocktails. The martini I ordered was dry and up, the Moscow Mule was fragrant and a good companion to the ceviche. Then came a duck for two. A half-duck with mandarin and middle eastern spices, a new take on duck a l'orange. Coco described her duck with winter vegetables, but my guess was that she forgot to change winter for spring as I saw asparagus, spinach and french beans; all of which are spring vegetables. The duck fat fries had to be the hot make-out session of the night, with potato wedges that had crisp and flavorsome exterior and fluffy soft interiors. All in all, I'd take Coco out for a few more nights, but she's quite a stylish lady and I'm sure she'll be happy with more suitors and attention from other leading men if given the choice.
