Unfortunately, the batter on the outside of the fish and turnover was undercooked and the chips a bit soft. I was really hoping for good food based on all previous reviews. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the lady at the counter was kind enough to let me come back and pay in cash because my credit card wasn't working. She even let me take my food with me, trusting I would come back to pay. Something that would never happen in the states.

We each had a burger and beer over Battleship and Bananagrams (we were going for alliteration) and had a hard time choosing, they all looked so good! She went with the southern fried chicken burger and LOVED it - a huge portion, perfectly seasoned, a burger that fell apart in your hands in the best way. Stumbling across this empty corner bar, thinking they are bound to be finished for lunch.......thank god no. The glow from the fire was as welcoming as the greeting from the marvellous wait staff. Craft beers on tap, knowledge about the vast wines and a menu that can suit all tastes. We felt we could not put a fork wrong as we tasted our way through dish after dish of magic. Even a midway trip to the bathroom left us wondering why our supposedly 5 star hotel was not as well equipped. I even stopped during the 3rd round of tapas to write this its that good. While we were glad we were the only ones here we could not help but feel some sort of obligation to let everyone know how good it was. Located at the waterfront boardwalk area in central Wellington, this place offers a more upscale dining experience. Prices are a little bit above average, I would say. We had tried to make reservations online, but we were only able to get a 7:30 PM slot, so we decided to just head over there at 6 PM. Surprisingly, the host immediately found us a table, which told me that the online reservations are not necessarily accurate. The restaurant does not have outdoor seating, but the indoor atmosphere is very classy and pleasant, with a lovely decor, white table cloths and comfortable chair. There are partial view of the waterfront. But, unfortunately a large part of the view is obstructed with what looks like some kind of a metal dock. I would have taken a half a star off for that if I could. I didn't want to take a whole star off though, for the food and the service were superior. Our server, a young Canadian gal, working in New Zealand for 2 years was super friendly and very professional. She had a lot of knowledge and explained in detail the various items on the menu and gave us recommendations. We ordered a couple of appetizers. A variety of breads with burned butter.. very unique and flavorful and a delicious goat cheese salad. My husband and son choose the grilled snapper, which later on I wish I would have also taken. Instead, I had the seafood risotto, which was absolutely scrumptious, but I could have done without the carbs overload.... my fault.. lol The food arrived after about 25 minutes, which tells me it was prepared after it was ordered. Presentation was gorgeous, every dish was hot and delicious. The fish was so tender and flavorful and the risotto was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're visiting the area.
