Later, while on my ferry journey to Stornoway, I decided to look up the Tesco company and learned it was founded in 1919 and had operations outside of Scotland in a handful of countries including Hungary and Ireland. The inside of the store was straightforward to navigate and I got a few produce items, canned goods, and a small container of eggs. The prices were good and check out was simple with friendly workers. Products I bought were in good condition and served as snack and meal items both on the ferry ride to Stornoway and while in the Outer Isles until I replenished my supplies. Produce items and eggs were fresh and flavorful and the canned items and eggs easy to cook with.

The Co-op was easy to spot and the parking lot easy to maneuver in and out of. The store was well stocked and had an abundance of snack items. I went with two flavours/preparations of Kings 100% British & Irish Beef (British BBQ jerky and Rib Eye Flavour Biltong) as well as Scottish butter toffee (Buchanan's). All three items were delicious and well packaged for the road. Prices were fair and workers kind.

The parking lot was large and easy to maneuver with spots well marked. It was straightforward to find on foot as well. On the front of the store was an ATM, where I withdrew some money to make sure to have cash on hand during my travels. Inside the store, items were easy to find and in good condition. I went with produce and meal items as where I was staying, the Macaulay Farm Lodge, had a kitchen we were allowed to use. Since a number of the places I stayed on my trip included breakfast, it was fun to get to cook a few of my own meals and I was happy to have high quality ingredients I could use. If arriving/departing via the ferry, the store is a block or two from the loading/unloading dock.

There are mixed reviews about this shop. And at first glance one can see why. The store looks a bit dated, a bit run-down. And inside there are several shelves empty or at least close to being empty. But this is mainly because there's a huge number of visitors doing their shopping here, so naturally stuff gets sold out. And whenever we went, it was always packed here. But it is actually a very good store this one. We were suprised by the good quality of all the meat here (rump and sirloin steaks, lamb, bacon, duck) and the variety of the food. All real good value. Ok, the wine section didn't blow us away, but had some enjoyable stuff. We found what we've looked for: soda, water, milk, rice, pasta, veggies, fruits, crackers, bread, eggs, guacamole and hummus dip, wine, Prosecco. Made some enjoyable dinners out of these ingredients.

As you walk in you are greeted to freshly made bakery, rolls and bread. They have a hot stand which keeps bacon rolls and many pasties warm. They also have a large range of sandwiches and salads. Usual groceries fresh vegetable, meat, tinned goods, frozen items are found here as well. It can get very busy and at times the queues can be known to go far along the aisles, but they move relatively fast. A very handy shop to have as the supermarkets are located out of the town centre.

Can not believe it, the day after Christmas, I was in this wee Co-op store buying some peach…read moreschnapps, there were 2 girls at the checkout in front of me and pointed at me saying to the staff: "there are so many of these Chinese people around these days, why is that?" The staff ( called Elaine) looked at me and told me to step off cuz of COVID (lol), I asked her if they are having a conversation about complaining "having too many Chinese people around", Elaine (stared at me) said: "that's a conversation between me and them." Thank you Elaine for encouraging such racist behaviour on behalf of the national company Co-op and I still haven't received an apology from her or the manager. 3rd year in the UK, first time having this sort of experience, hopefully this won't happen in the future again as Britain is getting far more international for this.

There are a number of restaurants in Portree and food available in the general area. However, it was prime tourist season and the lines could be long. So, I decided to see if I could find a grocery store to get some late lunch/early dinner items. The parking lot of this Co-op on the periphery of Portree is large and easy to access. The store was well laid out with items easy to find. As I was looking over items, I noticed a half rotisserie chicken in the hot foods section. No, I thought. I did not travel from the west coast of the United States of America to Scotland to eat half a rotisseries chicken. After looking around some more, I went with it. I got a few other items as well. Check out was straightforward and I did not have payment issues. Unsure of where to dispose of the remains of the rotisserie chicken once I ate it, I noticed a trash receptacle out front of the building. I thought eating in my rental car in the parking lot and disposing of my trash at the receptacle sounded like a good alternative to leaving the chicken remains in my hotel room. I was not the only person who had the same eating in the parking lot idea. The chicken was tender, tasty, and, very thankfully, not messy. The other items I got were good as well.
