The line's history is horribly complex, but essentially it was built by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway to cross the Thames and to link up with the Metropolitan Railway at Farringdon, via the 'Snow Hill Tunnel'. The line was built northwards in stages, opening to a temporary terminus at Ludgate Hill in December 1864, and to Farringdon in 1866. In 1874 a short spur was built from Ludgate Hill to a terminus on the then new thoroughfare of Holborn Viaduct. Platforms were also built in the adjacent section of track at the entrance to the Snow Hill Tunnel in 1874 - first called 'Snow Hill' station, then (from 1912) 'Holborn Viaduct Low Level'. Trains went both to Farringdon and beyond via King's Cross, and from 1871 towards Moorgate. The lines were incredibly busy at first, forming an essential north-south link, but patronage declined with the advent of the Underground and tram networks and the through line via the Snow Hill Tunnel was closed to passengers as early as 1916. Ludgate Hill station closed in 1929. Freight continued until 1969 but the line through the tunnel was then closed in 1971. Holborn Viaduct soldiered on as a terminus on the line from Blackfriars until 1990, by which time it was only in use at peak hours and was in a very sorry state. In the meantime, the Snow Hill tunnel had reopened as part of the Thameslink project. For this, a new line was built diving beneath Ludgate Hill (the old line crossed it on a bridge), and a new station built next to Holborn Viaduct station and named St Paul's Thameslink. Holborn Viaduct terminus then closed. In 1991 St Paul's Thameslink was renamed City Thameslink - bringing us right up to date! The original route of the line has now been buried under office developments. The station has no visible external architecture to speak of - it's just a series of entrances under various office buildings. The platforms are spacious and brightly lit, but otherwise utilitarian. There are toilets and a ticket office with limited opening hours (although the station is always staffed). City Thameslink has no direct link with the Underground, although the Ludgate Hill entrance is very handy for classic views of St Paul's Cathedral. The service is frequent on weekdays but rather sparser on Saturdays, and the station is not open on Sundays, when the line is prone to close for engineering works. Despite this, it is still used by over 5 million passengers a year. The station has step-free access, but the lifts are currently out of action for refurbishment until mid October (2008).

It's a ok station. Can be a bit dirty especially toilets. Smells often when standing around…read morewaiting for train. Sparks fly off wires above trains that come/go from station. Staff are not very friendly either. When trains go wrong information is not always circulated very well or wrong. Only good thing about the station is that there is a ATM onsite, WH Smith, shoe repairers and a coffee shop.

Large train station with over 20 tracks. Can be confusing for switch tracks go where, so ask…read moresomeone or arrange extra time before your departure :-) The mobile app can be "funky" on US mobile phones. I had to connect to local WiFi to buy tickets. Otherwise use machines in the terminal. Beware that the +20 tracks are CNN located on the far side. You must have a ticket to enter any of tracks.

Well, it turned out that I was completely wrong - this station is absolutely massive, much, much bigger than I have every experienced (in fact it is the biggest station in England). Yeah, so it turned out that I had absolutely no idea where to meet him (though we ended up meeting up anyway). Yeah, this station is nothing short of massive, and it simply took me ages just to locate the tube station so I could get back to my hotel. To a guy from Australia the size of this station is mindboggling.

Tottenham Court Road Tube Station is by far the most posh of the Tube stations that we travelled…read morethrough. The Station is busy with local people traveling to work and tourists coming to shop in the area. The pace is fast with north/south and east/west trains that travel to Heathrow. The walls are freshly covered in white tiles. The station is clean with a very long escalator up and down to the tubes. Escalators are available if you have a stroller or are carrying luggage. The walls are covered with show advertisements. Using credit card to tap on and off is easy. Monitors tell passengers the exact moment a train will arrive. We travelled through the station several times.

Tottenham is 15 minute walk to and from our hotel on Strand. We only used the train twice during…read moreour trip to London. From the airport and back. We took the Elizabeth Line to avoid making too many transfers even though there were other train stations nearby. We wanted to keep our trip simple and stress free. If you're are travelling here and taking the Elizabeth Line from the airport to the Strand area.... I recommend using a wheeled rolling suitcase. This is what we used and we packed light too so it was easy for us to roll our luggage along the many cobblestone sidewalks. Navigating Tottenham Court Road Station is easy. There are maps located throughout the station so you know where you are and where you're going and which stops to get off and on at. Make sure to have your credit/debit card on hand to swipe through and make the swipe your card again once you get off the train so you don't keep getting charged after you've completed your trip. Staff here are super helpful id you need assistance

Action Town is a major interchange on the District and Piccadilly lines in West London, and is used…read moreby over 5.5 million passengers a year. Opened in 1879 as Mill Hill Park on the extension of the Metropolitan District Railway from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway, services were gradually augmented with the opening of the line to Hounslow Town in 1883, to Hounslow Barracks (now Hounslow West) in 1884 and South Acton in 1905. The station was rebuilt in 1910 and renamed 'Acton Town'. It was rebuilt again in 1931, in preparation for the Piccadilly line taking over services (from the District Line) to Uxbridge, and with the extension of Piccadilly line services to Hounslow West (now on the Heathrow branch) in 1933. This is one of Frank Holden's famous modernist style stations, with a tall, square ticket hall featuring extensive glazing, above a single storey podium containing shops and other facilities. The platforms also retain the concrete canopies from this period. Alas, these are looking a little tatty now, and the whole station could benefit from a lick of paint. The line to South Acton closed in 1959, and since 1964 the Hounslow West branch has been operated by Piccadilly line trains only (but was extended to Heathrow in 1977). It retains an important function as an interchange, as Piccadilly line trains do not stop at most of the intermediate stations between here and Hammersmith, and it is the junction for the lines north to Ealing Broadway (District) and Rayners Lane/Uxbridge (Piccadilly) and west to Heathrow (Piccadilly). The station is served by the E3 bus, and by buses 70, 207, 427, 440 and night buses N7, N11 and N207 in nearby Harrow Road

For how many people pass through daily, I found it clean - especially compared to a public transport stop in Chicago or NYC. As an American, from Wisconsin, I am essentially ignorant as to how public transportation works. But with a little patience and a lot of assistance from Google Maps and politely asking staff or other travelers, it really isn't as crazy as it seems. I feel like there is decent signage, the key is to research ahead of time what platform you are arriving on and where you need to go next. Also, avoiding the work/school rush hours makes it much less intimidating ;)

That's because it is basically a major interchange station, and it almost seems as if all trains that head to the south of London pass through here. Honestly, it is truly massive. When it came to the Underground aka the Tube, Marble Arch was never my favourite station and it left a lot to be desired. Trying to catch a bus around here was a nightmare and the trains that come through here were not nearly as full coverage as you would hope and want them to be. However it's a wonderful location for starting a nice long walk across Hyde Park or a beautiful walk down Oxford Street for shopping. Either or, it's amazing.

Well, that probably should be surprising considering that Croydon is a pretty major metropolitan hub, so of course there is going to be a pretty large station here. Stratford Station is the train station that we used most often when we stay in London. We always…read morestay at a hotel close to Stratford Station because it is very convenient. So many of the different train lines stop at Stratford Station. As others have mentioned, this station is huge! We've gotten a bit confused a couple of times during our stay. The staff have been very helpful in directing us where to go to get to our destination. For our most recent trip to London, there were quite a bit of homeless folks and litter outside the station. Never noticed any on our past trips to London. Other than that, I have no complaints about Stratford Station.
