Stracks in Whiting on Calumet Ave, which is actually Hammond is a nice grocery store. My review is ilif the hot food Deli. The food is good when you can get it. I used to stop by once a week but had to stop because either out of fried chicken for an hour or two and three weeks in a row out of potato cakes(steak fries) and the employee would say they're out. I decided to stop in on a Saturday late afternoon and once again out of fried chicken. What's the point of selling chicken if you're out at dinner time all the time. I won't try it again. read more

I thought this store had more class than what I have experience. Myself and a few more ladies shop there frequently however the service from an associate by the name of Abigail makes it very uncomfortable to shop there. On various occasions she is yelling at the top of her lungs at fellow employee. I feel bad for them. She should really learn what RESPECT really means. I went for the bakery and although there were multiple selections, I was disappointed. Multiple bread types were present and there were many muffins and cakes to choose from among the bakery items. Unfortunately, I didn't find any of the offerings extremely unique or enticing. Most items appeared mass marketed versus bakery made. The aisles surrounding the center table was very tight and two carts couldn't enter at the same time making shopping difficult. The store itself had tight aisles with a layout that did not flow well. Product availability appeared plentiful and checkout was easy though register lines backed into shopping aisles and impeded people's shopping. Parking was close though entry and exit was tight and difficult when cars entered at the same time. Surprised this bakery was listed in top searches for area. Disappointing. Won't be back. read more

I am a long time patron of this Strack's as they have always had groceries at good prices (and quantities). Its smaller than a number of area stores, but chances are they do have what you are looking for. Their bakery (Almira's) within the store is also very good with a wide variety of breads, cakes, and donuts (you can even get Paczki here well after Fat Tuesday). They also have a full-service deli where you can get dinners on the go (and even Fish Dinners on Fridays). All in all a great little store to visit near my house. When Walmart or Aldi don't have what I need, I'll go here. read more

This was a nice break from the places I usually visit here in Chicago. Even with the Beverage tax GONE it's great to shop and find low taxes. The variety was good, it was quiet, and they have the beer I can't get in Chicago, Yeungling! read more

Strack and Van Til is my favorite grocery store. I travel from Chicago to reap the benefits of their friendly staff and well-organized store. Not only is the staff friendly, but so are the customers. Upon entry I'm greeted with many "hellos", as well as attentiveness as I shop. Another thing that I like about this store is that they are open late; especially on certain holidays. read more

Not new and snazzy like the one on Elston in Chicago, however even though it's older and a bit smaller it's still a good place to shop. The store is clean and well stocked, and the employees are friendly many of them said hello as you passed them in the aisle. Prices seem to be on par with the Chicago location, maybe just a smidge less. Which could be handy when you live by the nearby casino. read more

This is my number one grocery store to go to. It's not very large so it's very easy and manageable to shop the whole store quickly. And they have everything! (OK, maybe not the fresh-made sushi rolls, but everything else) Employees are helpful when needed and very friendly--they will shoot the shyt with you while you're checking out, not just the normal hi how are you how bout this weather schtick but real conversation. And their prices are great! I hadn't bought groceries for a month (because LAAAAAZZZYYYY) and a full-to-the-top cart came in under $200.00. read more

Everything in the store is overpriced, customer service it's horrible, and they do often saw a lot of stuff that goes bad very quick. I'm surprised at this store is even still around and it's sad that it's the biggest store for most of the locals in the area to shop at but hopefully in the near future they will just turn the lights off and lock the doors for good. read more

Parking lot is almost always a nightmare, can't see when backing out/idiots pull out at the same time...but that's not why you're here, at least why I came here. I came for a fried seafood dinner at 7:45 pm. Deli lady said deli is open 'til 9 pm. Okay, I said I'll take the seafood dinner. Deli lady said, oh wait, they might have shut off the fryers. SHUT OFF THE FRYERS 1-1/2 hrs. before the deli closes? Deli lady said you can come back in the morning. Yeah, I'll be in the mood for a seafood breakfast. After speaking to the manager, receiving an apology and that this should not have happened; 1 fryer should be left on until 1 hour before deli closes. The staff is always friendly! I love that they're open until midnight! It gives me a chance to go grocery shopping after work. The store is relatively small compare to other Strack's, BUT it still has all the necessary items! And it's right off Calumet Avenue!! read more

A very expensive place. Not enough cashiers there sometimes. Most cashiers there are ok except for 1 male cashier.

I ordered chicken and told them I would pick it up whenever they could have it ready because I know they are busy. I asked to have it separated and bagged so it stays crispy. The girl said okay they just got some more bags in. When I went to pick it up, it wasn't ready and I was okay-- I'd get some groceries but reminded it was to be bagged. Came back and it was boxed and plastic wrapped. Asked for bags and they said they were out and no, we don't know who took your order just an hour and half ago. So they take in back to put in bags and come back and say they're re-dipping in oil. What? Is that even up to health codes? I left the chicken and all my groceries. There's a Walmart up the street. I had stuck to stracks to shop local but now they can just shut down. read more

They are really working in improving their prices which us a huge plus! Everyone that works there is so friendly and willing to help. If you are looking for something and its not on the shelf, an employee is always willing to check in back for you. The cashiers are some of the sweetest ladies you will ever meet. read more
