Just outside Assumption, Illinois is Cypress Grove Farm, where "belties" - a traditional Scottish…read morebreed of beef cattle properly called the Belted Galloway - are raised. Cypress Grove has a farm store as well, and as of 2019, a side business as a brewery. A bit of digging through online newspaper articles showed that the owners were partners in the original iteration of 1905 Brewing Company in town, but left the partnership when that bar burned down in 2019. Now they make beer out on their farm, offering it by the cup, crowler, and growler in their farm store. Plenty of picnic tables and lawn chairs were spread under large oak trees on the lawn. They have food trucks on the premises on select weekends; for our visit, just brats and chips were available, plus meat and cheese from the farm store. Guests are warmly greeted, and welcome to stroll around the property to see the fields and cattle. During our COVID-era visit, masks were worn indoors and parties were safely distanced outside. The beers we tried were excellent, including an Irish Red, a "Trials and Tritical-ations" experimental pale ale, and a couple sours. We took home some crowlers, including a "Pork Snout Milk Stout" which really is infused with pork... interesting, but not for me! Cypress Grove was definitely worth driving a few miles off our planned trek through Christian County. It's a lovely setting with friendly folks and great brews.

Unimpressive. I will say, I'm not a beer drinker, but I was excited to finally check this place out…read morebecause I had heard that they have great food! It was a very limited menu. We ordered the fried pickles as an appetizer and that came out with the meal. I had the quesadilla and my husband had the bacon wrapped meatloaf. Nothing was bad, but it wasn't great either. I was disappointed in the drink options as well. If you are looking for beer on tap, this is your place. However, they only have cocktails on tap and a very limited selection at that. 4 wine options. Soda. Water. That's it. Unfortunately this isn't listed anywhere on the website, so we weren't expecting them to not have a bar. We ordered strawberry margaritas and they were ok. Would we go back? Not likely.

I'd seen the Route 51 Brewery a couple times when going between Carbondale and DuQuoin. Over Christmas weekend we decided to check it out along with one of my high school friends. The beer selection was excellent. We enjoyed all of the different brews we had in our flights. There is a modest selection of food. We got pretzels and pickle chips. Both were decent. I wouldn't go out of my way for the food, but it was a nice compliment to the quality beer. The facility was new, well maintained, and I dug the scorched wood tables. There is a stage where bands can play, and a reception hall nextdoor. Overall I think it is a nice addition to the brewery and winery industry that has grown over the last decade. Check it out if you are in the area.

When I booked a hotel in lil ol Paris, Illinois I was not hopeful their would be a brewery. Lo and…read morebehold I am happy that there is! Lot 50 is brewery #306 for me. Lot 50 has tables out front as well as a big space inside with a large concrete bar. I don't know what it is I like about concrete bars, but I like 'em. It wasn't very busy at 4:15 on Friday with just two couples sitting out front. I was the only one at the bar. As I was sitting at the bar I noticed there was a YUGE outdoor area off to the side. Lights and all it would be a great spot for a concert when the weather is good. Batch 59 DIPA was really nice! I may be getting inured hops but this one was really smooth. Great flavor all the way through. I think even SWPFTD would enjoy this one. Clurichaun red ale was next. I immediately wondered about the name but right there on the paper menu it said, "Named after the leprechauns drunken, mischievous cousin". I thought leprechauns were mischievous to begin with and being Irish I just assumed they were drunken! Don't get your panties in a wad and all offended, my wife is Irish and I'm Scottish. Besides, the Irish can take a joke! Anyway, this was a very good malty red ale. Stagecoach coffee blonde just didn't work for me. It's probably partially due to my favorite coffee blonde was at a brewery in my former hometown that we frequented weekly for years. You can taste nostalgia sometimes. Shoutout to Sons of Liberty Aleworks! We miss you! Anyway, this was not a bad beer at all, just not quite what I wanted. YMMV of course. The Honeybee brown ale looked more like an amber ale by color. Even by flavor I could have mistaken this for a festbier. That said I truly did enjoy it. I would order another for sure. Last beer for me...notice I said last "beer". Last beer for me was the Frosted Court St stout. A collaboration with "Frosted by Maddie". I don't know for sure what that means but I'm guessing a bakery since it mentions a stout crossed with red velvet cake. This was pretty darn good. I can't say I got the red velvet cake flavor out of it but it was a good beer. As I was hanging out at the bar, you know, doing that drinking and Yelping thing I do, I noticed they had two meads that were brewed in house as well. Sold! The Twisty Foo Orange Creamsicle mead was very tasty. I wouldn't have pegged it as "orange dreamsicle" without a hint but that might be me. Last was the Cosmic Fudge Plum Brownie mead. What do you classify that as? A melomel I guess since it has plum in it. I don't know what you call mead that is brownie flavored. If I had ever smelled and tasted a plum fudge brownie, this is EXACTLY WHAT IT WOULD TASTE LIKE. That is...if it were a mead. The flavors were legit but I didn't love the mead. I like the Twisted Foo better myself. If you are in the area, stop in a Lot 50. I enjoyed it! If anyone is a glutton for punishment, please, follow my brewery, and distillery, reviews from across the U.S. and beyond! https://www.yelp.com/collection/-8iscFkpiiCI563-FDfwGg and if anyone is wondering who SWPFTD is you will have to check out my review of Black Market Brewing Co in Temecula, CA to understand. Yes, you will need to read into it a little to get the joke but I have confidence in you! I hope my confidence is not misplaced.

Sign at the end of the gravel road announced our arrival. Pulled into the lot and we were the only ones there beyond the workers late in the afternoon on a Sunday. Cash only but they have an ATM on site. Visited the brewery room and perused the different beers available on draft, in bottles, and growlers. Ordered a pizza, the green tomato and sausage. And chose a flight of beer, four for $13. Sumac Sour, Fig Porter, Dead Leaves, and Basil Saison. I enjoyed every one of them, but the Dead Leaves was my overall favorite. I decided on that one as my take home growler. I really enjoyed the green tomato sausage pizza, I enjoy a green tomato, not many restaurants have them on their menu in a state other than fried, so I had to get it. The flavors were great; the tartness of the green tomato went well with the sausage. The space is incredible, very rustic and woodsy, the perfect backdrop to the foraged beers. Every space was decked out with funky colors and artwork. I really wish it was closer, definitely a road trip to go back but feel it would be worth it in each of the seasons!

Even though it completely destroyed the building, it wasn't the end. This story inspired us to come to check it out. After poking around in Decatur awhile, we came for the awesome beer. It's kind of a ways to get to Assumption, on some lonely highway. The restaurant in town, DJ's has some of this on tap. Because this place is only open Fridays and Saturdays, you can go there when the brewery is closed. The brewery was open though. It's about $5 a pint. They have a pretty large variety. I had the 1905 Citra. This is an IPA, and wasn't crazy hoppy. Has no food except maybe chips. They however allow customers to bring in food from the restaurants around here. Good beer. It's also a good story and gives this rinky dink town of Assumption something to be proud of. This is worth a drive to check out what they have become even with a setback.
