This was my first visit. I was in town, visiting with family and rather than cooking, we decided to try a Mexican restaurant. The ambience was casual and we were dressed accordingly. We sat at a table, with high-back bench seats on either side. Our waiters were fluent in Spanish, but conversing in English was not a problem. We placed our orders and shortly thereafter, our meals arrived. There were smiles all around as we dug in to the food. The portions were ample. The prices were fair for the amount of food we received. Everything was served on China plates with real tableware. When were were all full, carryout containers were provided to take home the excess. El Cactus was recommended to us by a lovely local woman after I asked if there was a place in Albion my husband and I could grab a cocktail. We had parked our car in preparation for the eclipse, and didn't want to move it, so the walkable distance to El Cactus was perfect. This authentic restaurant is bright and open inside with nice seating options on the patio. Great for groups. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the chips and salsa are very good. My husband ordered a couple Coronas, and I had a large margarita which was very delicious and totally hit the spot. Had it not been for the eclipse, I could easily have stayed and had more! Albion is a wonderful small town with awesome people, and I can only imagine how this spot will add to that. read more

I recently drove through Olney, Illinois and found this fantastic restaurant. I ordered Chiles Rellenos and it was the best I have ever had. The pepper was soft, the cheese was tasty and the sauce on top was delicious. The sauce seemed to have a bit on cinnamon in it. I have ordered this dish often from different restaurants through the years and this was the best. Service was excellent, and the ambiance was pleasant. Besides that the prices were excellent. They had plenty of specials for only $8.99. read more

We had an extremely bad experience about a year ago but I never posted a review and I should have. We ordered the luncheon special. My fiancé ordered something slightly different, I can't remember what it was. A small addition but not a real substitution. They charged us over twice the luncheon special and refused to acknowledge what they were doing. We have not returned since then. However I've lost track of the number of stories I have heard of cold food, bad customer service, charging the wrong amount for a meal, and charging something ridiculously extra like two dollars for a little bit of cheese on a small taco. I've even had family members go in one evening for margaritas and tacos and after they were served they were told they needed to eat it all quickly including the pitcher of margaritas because they were closing in 10 minutes. Waiters/manager did not warn them when they were taking the order and expected them to slim down their food and drinks and rush out. They actually turned the lights out on them. I drive past there two or three times every day and it has been weeks since I have seen a single customer there. Even today there are no cars parked anywhere nearby and the tables are empty. Thank goodness an excellent, authentic Mexican restaurant opened down the street. I am assuming that, like us, everyone is going to Mis Tres Potrillos for excellent Mexican food, great service, wonderful, inexpensive margaritas. read more

The service can be hit or miss at times, but the food has always been awesome. Portions are large and prices are incredibly reasonable.

This would have been a 3-star rating if the service was even satisfactory. The food was good, nothing memorable, but the server was terrible. Ambivalent, unattentive, uncaring. He was not a good representative of the restaurant. I had the 'Mexican Flag Enchiladas' and, as you can see in the picture, nothing spectacular but edible and filling. Very little cheese, despite what the menu says it was 'covered in'. Nice to sit outside under the roof but the flies were a problem. Again, nothing here that would scream to me "I must go back!" but until the service improves, I don't see anything worthwhile. read more

This was the absolute worst Mexican restaurant we have ever been to. We love to go to Lindo Mexico in Greenwood Indiana but today we are in Olney Illinois. The margarita tasted like mix with straight water and no tequila whatsoever. My taco salad was floating in juice which made for a very undesirable dish. The staff was not friendly and the person at the register did not bother to ask how the meal was. We went because of the good reviews but needless to say will never be back. read more

You never know what you're gonna get in small town USA when it comes to Mexican food. It can either be really good or really bad. Boy did I luck out! Yay! The interior is really cute and painted in festive colors and there is a big outdoor seating area, too. It was slow when I first walked in, so there were almost too many people trying to serve me. But the early show must've let out a little before 9, because there was a rush and then it was hard to get anybody's attention for a refill or to get my check. I so don't care though! Here are the deets on the food: I got a perfectly sweet, sweet tea and a big ol' honkin' glass of water that they served with a lime slice. (Nice touch!) I ordered the tacos al pastor and oh em gee they were freakin' awesome! For real. Like 70 times more awesome than the expensive tequila bar in Champaign where I order al pastor. You get four flour tortillas with this perfectly sweet, savory pork goodness inside and then they bring a separate plate with sauce bowls of pico, verde, and beans. (I ordered some crema and some queso, too. Good call, for the record, because it was awesome with the pork and verde. ) The verde salsa was awesome, incidentally. It had that kind of creamy, super fresh flavor at first and then the heat started to build.... Nom! So if you have a hankering for a little Mexican food while you're in O-town, head over and for the love of all things holy order the al pastor!!!!!!! read more

Wonderful service! Hot and quick meals. Margarita Monday's and Wednesday's are a go to! A small for 1.99. They are really the best around.

If this place was in Chicago I'd give it 3 stars, it's good but you could find better. But the fact that this is in Olney, IL, it gets a full 5 stars. read more

Probably one of the best places I have eaten in Olney. They don't have a ton of restaurants, so it is hard to find places for vegetarians to eat, but this place had several options. It's hard to travel with a vegetarian sometimes! I had several different types of tacos, all of which were tasty. My only complaint was the taco trimmings were a little limited. I could have used some plain onion instead of what was offered with them. read more
