I covet just about everything in Thomas D. Mangelsen's Brekcenridge, CO gallery. Can't afford any…read moreof it, though. So, I keep an eye out for talented and cheaper photographers. Today I decided to head a little ways into the mountains to check out supposedly Victorian Georgetown just off I70. The historic district, while small, does have charm. It's worth the detour. After scoping out the shops I was immediately drawn to Grizzly Creek Gallery. To my surprise, the guy helping the people already in the shop was the owner/photographer Gary Haines. (Good luck running into Mangelsen at one of his galleries.) He's warm and friendly, has some great work and (best of all) he's got some reasonable prices. He's also a local. Support Colorado artists! After selecting a print it turned out he's also an expert framer. Ever been to Fast Frame? Wow, expensive! Even Hobby Lobby adds up quick. Gary framed the print in a gorgeous barn wood frame (he gets them from a friend in South Dakota) for less than Hobby Lobby's ordinary boring stuff. Thanks, Gary! Will be back on a regular basis to check out your new work.

The kind of place I imagine people don't lock their homes or cars. After a late, delicious breakfast at Happy Cooker, we took a stroll down the main street (6th Street). One of the places that caught our eye was Georgetown Gallery. It shares a front door with Georgetown Coffee & Tea. We're not big on visiting galleries because they either have outrageous prices or the art is so bizarre or ornate it's nothing we would consider putting in our home. But Georgetown Gallery is different. It is made up of several mini-galleries from artists who make unique, affordable, and very tasteful pieces. If I had unlimited funds, I would have needed two men and a small boy to carry out all the pieces of art I would have purchased! The artisans also take turns staffing the place. On this day we got to meet Karen Heber. A retired school teacher turned painter and potter. We purchased one of her lithographs. (It's the one she shows on the gallery's website.) There were a few others we also liked but our budget wouldn't allow us to buy everything we liked. Karen's pottery was beautiful and cool, but we bought a piece of pottery from another artist to fit the decor of a friend's home. Between you and me... this gallery is VERY affordable and many of the pieces are a BARGAIN! We expected the piece of pottery we bought to easily be around $35. When Karen said it was $18 we just looked at each other like "Okaaaay, wrap it up!" All-in-all it was a pleasure to speak with Karen, learn about her art and the local history, and take our time looking around the gallery without being pressured. I'm sure we'll be visiting the gallery again around Christmastime when the town has special holiday festivities.

Amazing Christmas train!…read more We decided to buy tickets for the last ride of the night (8pm) for Santa's Enchanted Forest. We also wanted to ride Parlor class this time as we've ridden coach before. Parlor had tables and snacks and drink service! Santa was so much fun too. We declined having any pictures taken, I heard the lady say it was $25 for one print. Which is fine but I also didn't think I looked cute enough as I was bundled to the cheeks. It was below freezing! After the ride we visited Mrs Clause and got the kid's jingle bells and hot chocolate.
