I've been going to Stoneham Dental Care for over 20 years. This practice has become like family. I was fortunate that I always had decent relationships with my dentist growing up, but when I moved to MA I had a hard time finding a new one. I took advantage of one of their specials I received in the mail when I lived in Reading and went in. Everyone was kind and I felt comfortable. The dentist at the time informed me I had to have 2 wisdom teeth removed. The oral surgeon they sent me to was AMAZING. My trust was built with Stoneham Dental Care - to have recommended such an amazing surgeon they had to be great as well. I was a pretty basic patient - fillings here and there, cleanings every 6 mos., etc... and then I had a dental disaster in 2014. I experienced an injury resulting in a concussion, loss of a tooth and displaced front teeth. Every specialist was caring and pleasant through the entire process. They saw me cry. They saw me in pain. They saw me irrationally upset over every delay - due to the healing process, not anything they did wrong. Root canal? No issue. Implant? No issue. It wasn't their fault I was having emotional stress from the incident. I have had nothing but positive experiences with any of the staff at Stoneham Dental Care. It's a little costly, yes... but they go above and beyond. read more

I have been a patient of Stoneham dental care for 43 years. Of course I started there as a child, but I continue there because of their long-standing dedication to state of the art patient-centered practice. I am terrified of the dentist. For a basic cleaning I require Ativan. (An incident happened with an orthodontist that triggered this, not here) This office understands my anxieties and are excessively patient with me. They offer me alternatives. They are compassionate and insightful. They are progressive and thoughtful and there's no place else I could imagine going. read more

I would give this establishment 1 star but the staff wasn't half bad. I'm not dentist friendly. I don't like having someone poking around in my mouth, quite possibly with a needle in hand. There was no consultation. I ended up with a high and mighty dentist whom was too busy for small talk but had no problem telling me that not only did I need a root canal (the truth) but that I needed all my silver fillings dug out of my head and replaced with white ones (the lie). The latter treatment was not covered by my insurance - (insert sarcasm) but he being the professional and having my best interest and dental health in mind - I let him do it. I experienced more pain in places that didn't ever have pain or sensitivity before. They said it would pass - ohkay - it didn't. So basically they dug deeper into my tooth, exposing more nerve which caused more pain and sensitivity - a no win situation for me. When they said the same thing to my husband and smart hubbie that he is - he looked up on the ADA website and found that it was not covered by our insurance company because it was not necessary - they considered it cosmetic only. He said no. Stoneham Dental got paid directly from our bank account with no problem for a procedure not covered or required, I lost all confidence in Stoneham Dental and I never went back. read more

All Dr Fitzgerald cared about was his bottom line.... after telling me I need to have my fillings replaced (which 2 dentists since have told me I did not need), I made a mistake by trusting him and letting him do it. That was about a year and a half ago, and the teeth he worked on have never been in more pain.... to the point I needed a root canal. I have spent THOUSANDS out of my pocket, and I still have not been able to repair what they did. The only way you should go here is if you want to pay a LOT of money for a LOT of pain. read more

I needed a dentist (sigh) and a friend of mine had raved about Stoneham Dental. I was still hesitant to try them because I saw the mixed reviews, but there were only 3 reviews posted in total and I've noticed in the past that the type of people who post on yelp are usually the small sector who are really pissed off. Sooo I went with my friend's advice and gave them a try. Loved them! I was squeezed in for a cleaning the week I called (they have some nights of the week with later, after work appointments!). The staff was friendly, smart, and I waited less than five minutes from walking in to being in the chair. Especially for a place with the warmth of a family business, this place has state of the art equipment. Dr. Fitzgerald showed me my electronic x-rays on a screen next to the chair and talked me through areas he was looking at. He also recommended I wait to have any procedures (I have a bit of receding gum lines), until I really needed them, and in the meantime to switch toothpastes. I got a great cleaning, piece of mind that I could wait on further procedures, and was out of there in 35 minutes= 5 stars. read more

I live in Cambridge but have been driving to Stoneham for 12 years now because I doubt I could find another dental practice as good as Dr. Petrelli's. Not only do I have complete confidence in her, but it's such I pleasant place to be. Everyone else, from the desk staff to the hygienist is warm and welcoming. After several years working with this practice I have come to be concerned about some of the work done under their roof. Specifically, a root canal done there has turned up with infection- caused by incomplete removal of material. I now have bone loss and some costly repairs to cover. Very disappointing. I called and made sure they accepted my health insurance. They said yes. I go in however many weeks later only for them to tell me they DO NOT accept what I have. Frustrating. Waste of my time. However, the inside was beautiful and they were friendly. I decided to try again with them when I got Blue Cross which again they told me they accepted. I guess I was naive to think my best interests were their top priority. It's all about the wording, they accept BSBS but they're not contracted! I do not recommend this business. read more

I have been going to stoneham dental for 30+ years and in that time they just continue to improve in all areas of the business. First of all they are a Family business which is rare. From the front desk to the hygienists, assistants, doctors they all treat you with respect and family. They provide many services which they will make you aware and explain but in no means pushy about it it. I wan't to start by saying that Dr. Fitzgerald, the dentist who all these bad reviews seem to be about, recently passed away. I never met Dr. Fitzgerald so I can neither confirm nor refute what previous reviewers have said. But I can say if you're steering clear of this place because of the poor reviews, don't. I was totally impressed! I recently went to Stoneham Dental for the first time. I don't have dental insurance and needed a cleaning. They're currently running an $80 special for a cleaning (incl. X-rays if needed) and full oral exam. I figured I'd take advantage of that offer despite the terrible reviews since I was just going for a cleaning. I was able to schedule the appointment five days from when I called. That might have something to do with the terrible reviews but it worked out for me because I don't like to wait. I arrived five minutes late and the very pleasant office staff assured me that it was not a problem. I started filling out my paperwork in the beautiful waiting room where they have a Keurig and a little fridge with bottled juices & water for the taking. Before I was even finished filling out the paperwork, the hygienist, Nancy, came to get me and said we could finish filling it out together. Nancy took me into the exam room, which was nice & clean. She started talking to me like we were old friends, which made me feel incredibly comfortable. I have some anxiety around going to the dentist so her bubbly personality and genuine, down-to-earth manner was welcomed and greatly appreciated. We chatted a bit while finishing up the paperwork so by the time she asked me to open my mouth I was completely relaxed. Nancy explained everything she was going to do before she did it. She told me how things were going to feel and sound and made sure I was comfortable with it before putting anything in my mouth. She was very thorough--she spent at least 30 minutes cleaning my teeth and examining my gums and mouth. I didn't get the feeling that she had to hurry up because other patients were waiting, which I've experienced at many medical/dental appointments in the past. Nancy went over my X-rays with me showing me a few places the dentist would probably have to check further so I knew exactly what to expect from the dentist before she even walked in the room. The dentist, Dr. Petrelli, was just as nice as Nancy. She introduced herself and, like the hygienist, told me what to expect before she did anything to my mouth. She explained that I should have a few (very) old fillings replaced and a couple new cavities filled. She also told me there was nothing dire that needed to be done immediately and she could do a little at a time over the next year or so. When I got back up to the front desk the secretary had a treatment plan printed out. Because I was the only person there, she sat with me in the waiting room and went over everything with me. The $80 charge was just that--an $80 charge--no hidden fees or tax or anything like that. She told me that Dr. Petrelli would fill two teeth on my next visit and in order to book the next visit they require a deposit (25% of the cost for the visit). Since I'd just gone in to take advantage of the cleaning special and I don't have the money to get any of the work done right now, I told her that I didn't want to book the visit yet. She very pleasantly said that was okay and told me to call when I was ready. I felt absolutely no pressure. When I'm ready to get the work done I will definitely go back to Stoneham Dental. They were great. I highly recommend them. And if, like me, you don't have dental insurance, why not take advantage of the $80 cleaning special and check them out for yourself? I am a new patient with Stoneham Dental. I am extremely impressed with the facility (spotlessly clean), the people who actually take time to learn about you and what is unique to you as a patient. Nancy was my first contact and she is friendly, warm, patient, personable -- and extremely knowledgeable. I never had such a thorough dental examination with state of the art equipment. From the entrance way to the dental chair the office is spacious and meticulously cared for. I would recommend it without hesitation from my first visit. Outstanding! I have never been so pleased with dental work or impressed by the quality of care provided by a dentist/staff. I had a free consultation and Dr. Petrelli really took her time to explain what needed to be done. I had a five veneers and a temporary crown done. Dr. Petrelli and her staff called me to check in and see how I was feeling, if I liked the work, and asked if they could do anything for me. She was genuinely concerned for me and wanted to make me happy. I've never had a dentist and staff provide such personal attention before! They are all really sweet and made me feel so comfortable. I don't do well with dental work and needed sedation. The staff walked me through it all and took such good care of me. Dr. Petrelli did not try to rip me off. Quite the contrary. I'm a full-time graduate student and she really worked with my budget. All in all, she went above and beyond any other dentist I've ever had. And now I have a Hollywood smile! The office is beautiful, and I was greeted in a friendly and welcoming way. My dental hygenist was very friendly, warm, and made me feel immediatly welcome and comfortable. She explained every procedure, the reason behind it, and what the outcome was. I loved the transparency of telling me what was happening, as I have never had that in a dentist exam. The day of my cleaning this week I wasn't feeling well so Maria was extra gentle (she knows I'm a baby) and, as usual, took the best care of me. My boyfriend recommended Stoneham Dental Care, since I needed a dentist closer to our house -- unfortunately I did not have the same experience as him. My front tooth chipped and that is what I made my appointment for. Not a full exam, not a cleaning, just to fix my tooth. I emphasized to the dentist and hygienist that I had to get to my other job as soon as my tooth was fixed. The money hungry dentist, told me I HAD to get x-rays and a full exam. It's ironic that she examined and x-rayed my mouth AFTER fixing my chipped tooth (which took a total of 3 minutes to bond). The dentist complained about how "crowded" my mouth was and that I needed my wisdom teeth removed. Mind you, I am almost 30 years old and my other dentist told me my wisdom teeth were very small and did not need to be removed. Long story short, they processed my dental insurance and showed me a bill of what Delta Dental covered and what they did not. I paid the $88.00 on my debit card that was not covered. About 2 months later, I receive a bill for $485.00. When I called the office, they denied showing me a bill and told me that my insurance never covered everything. So why was I not told this the day of my appointment? The dentist was arrogant, money-hungry, and demeaning. She made me feel like my teeth were in horrible shape (mind you I take pride in my smile and how well I take care of my teeth). I don't care how clean and nice Stoneham Dental Care looks. All they care about is making themselves even richer. - My tooth was fixed in September and its now May and the bond already fell off and my front tooth is chipped yet again. read more

I really think they care about the money SOLELY and not as much about patient care. They push services all the time and even though they say the maximize your insurance coverage they burned me pretty badly by not informing me if I waited an extra month or so for a procedure my insurance would pick up 80% of it. So unfortunately I had to pay 100% out of pocket. I would never go to them again. read more

He recommended a cap which he placed backwards. He removed it, without re-setting the cement and it was a major problem until I went to another dentist who actually was actually concerned about his patients and was also competent. He yelled at me in the public area of his office in front of the staff - who appeared to be embarrassed by his behavior - to the extent that one of them verbalized an apology. Others simply raised their eyebrows or shook their heads. He tried to intimidate - which he is not adept at doing - by saying that he didn't think we could work together. Given the pain, incompetence and reluctance to spend the appropriate amount of time to resolve the problem I indicated that I thought he was correct. He was clearly surprised. Apparently he pulls this routine on any patient that pursues the relief of any pain he causes. This guy was a nightmare. There are too many good dentists out there to put up with his irrational behavior. read more

I found this dentist online after not being able to go to my old dentist due to insurance coverage. I also was determined to get a second opinion on a tooth that had become so sensative, I couldn't eat anything. I was also nervous about going to another dentist due to all the trauma I have felt it in the past with other places(braces,root canal,fillings, and teeth pulled, etc. I stopped being a coward and had them do an exam and look at my tooth that was bothering me. Mary Petrelli checked me out and she knew exactly what the problem was. I at this point was in tears becuase I knew it meant more drilling and more numbing. Mary made me feel so comfortable. She was so confident and told me to not worry. I didn't feel one thing during the whole procedure. After the procedure I thought that I wasn't going to feel any more different then I already have. Wow, I was mistaken. I haven't had a problem since. Went back today for another tooth that I needed fixed. Mary and the staff greeted me and helped me relax. It was a little cold and they gave me a blanket to help me stay warm. They made sure to numb me quickly and finished in a timely manner. Dental Assistant Janene is always great too. She will ask you how your day is going and makes me laugh. I don't understand why they don't have 5 stars!! THE BEST!!!! read more

My first ever visit with Stoneham Dental Care was truly a comedy of errors. I went in for a standard cleaning. I ended up receiving a temp staff who had trouble with the equipment not functioning properly and no one really available to help her. Though she was nice, she did not seem very experienced and as someone who has not had the best history with dentists that made it uncomfortable. She had to re-take x-rays, have 2 additional staff come in to try to figure out was going on, only to have the same problem happen again and again. I'm 40, I've been to the dentist my entire life and I've never had cuts in my mouth from x-rays before until now. I was even offered topical cream to numb my mouth for x-rays. The solution is to position the device differently. Once we got to the cleaning, I was surprised that she didn't talk me through anything she was going to do. She was quiet and the suction tool was SO LOUD (equipment looked old) I never did what she told me to do so she would just force my head in different directions. Also, when someone says "ouch" repeatedly, it's time to take your hands out of their mouth. Period. Just stop. Red Alert - what happened to having a place for the patient to rinse and spit? The entire visit I had to sit with blood and drilled tooth particles in my mouth that was left behind by suction. Finally the dentist comes in for a look. As a first time customer, I thought there would be more pleasantries. Not so much. She got to business finding everything wrong with my teeth...to the tune of OVER $1,000. I've no doubt work needs to be done but the whole experience was outrageous. The nicest staff member I spoke with was the front desk lady. After being in the office for over one hour and 30 minutes, the receptionist sat me down to see if I wanted to start a payment plan...incredible. I will be driving all the way back to my old neighborhood for continued dental support. Please try to do better, Stoneham. read more

I wasn't going to write a review because I don't usually, but after reading the previous reviews I had to. I feel like I went to a different dentist's office than the one reviewed below! First off the dentist I saw was a female, Dr. Perelli, so the dentist is different. The office is beautiful, clean, and accommodating. The front desk staff was personable and welcoming, and the hygienists were super friendly and knowledgeable. The dentist herself was very approachable and down-to-earth. I appreciated how thorough the exam was without being overly intrusive and uncomfortable. At no time did I feel like money was the issue or that there were hidden dental agendas as suggested by the reviews below. Overall a very positive experience. read more

Staff is so nice. . .which is what the one star is for! Needed a new dentist and they had an opening so I tried it. Cleaning was fine and then I returned for two fillings. The first filling went in easily the second, not so much. They could not get the Novocain to take and tried five times before I was numb. I woke up the next morning with the WORST tooth pain I have ever felt and a very swollen face and gums. I called them and went back in that day and saw a different dentist who took x-rays and irrigated my mouth and was not sure if I needed a root canal, had an infection, needed a crown or had any idea what was going on. She prescribed me pain killers and antibiotics to reduce the swelling and told me to page her tomorrow if I was not better. Well I woke up the next day more swollen and in worse pain so I used the emergency number to page her and boy did they get right back to me. . .three hours later!!!! I explained to her what was going on and her response to everything was "I believe you will get better soon" (patronize much?). Not the response you are looking for when your face is swollen, your gums are inflamed and you are in excruciating pain and all from a filling, what I thought was a routine procedure! Today is five days later and the swelling has finally gone down a bit but I still cannot chew on that side of my mouth or even touch that tooth without pain. I have had numerous cavities filled (unfortunately) and never experienced pain like this before and never did it take so much work to numb it. The dentists hands were actually shaking from the pressure she was using to insert the needle, that might have been a clue to lessen the pressure. So if you are looking to drop $100 for a week of pain and a swolllen face I recommend this place!!!! read more
