So we head out here the Saturday after Christmas with my family to look for a few trees. Yelp says…read morethey are open 7-3:30 on Saturdays. There is a sign outside saying 7-3:30 on Saturdays but the gate is locked. I see someone in a golf cart riding around and a sign that says "ring the bell for service." Having never been here before I think, man that's weird let me ring the bell like it says. I ring the bell once and wait about two min. A guy comes down in his golf cart and I say "Hi" He doesn't say anything and just points to the gate. I say "are you open?" He says "can't you see the gate?" How incredibly rude. I say "I only see two signs, one says open 7-3:30 and one saying to ring the bell for service." He says "We are closed." I look around and say "where does it say that?" He says "the locked gate is obvious." I didn't want to argue with some stranger in front of my kids so we just turn around and leave, wife and kids upset over the interaction. Apparently they are closed between holidays and we are supposed to figure out the bell sign is not applicable during that time. Anyhow we got what we needed from Leo's Nursery on Dinuba Blvd. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Wish I could say the same about MidValley Trees.

This place is the Central Valley's best kept secret! A beautifully kept nursery with a wide…read morevariety of great plants and trees and excellent customer service. From the owner to Alonzo who drove us around in the golf cart showing us and helping us select the highest quality items we could find. Alonzo was not only a great customer service associate but was amazing in showing us a variety of options when looking for something with color and sun specifics. While some exotics were a little pricey they were certainly worth it in comparing the quality we purchased from other establishments. Other non-exotic nursery plants and shrubs were similarly priced and exceeded the competition by size and overall quality. It was our first time here-although we returned for more the very same day-and we will definitely be back!!!

I cannot recommend Monrovia Nursery at all. They seem to know little about the proper care of the…read morelarger plants. I ordered five Spire Arborvitae, and all five arrived heavily rootbound. They were a week in transit from CA to WA, and that time stressed the plants terribly. I doubt they watered the entire time, and being so rootbound, the plants were not taking up any water that was left in the soil. After I picked up the plants, I freed the roots as best I could, repotted them in enriched soil, then watered them. Three died, but the other two might just survive. This is the last time I order from Monrovia. I suggest you stay away from them too.

http://www.monrovia.com/about-us/…read more Only nursery industry people are allowed to tour here. I was once a nursery volunteer in OC, so I got to see this majestic place. And I must say, this is one of the Central Valley's places of major beauty. Yeah, you could say "beauty is only skin deep." If you want thick beauty on your porch, garden, yard, etc. you need the best plants.Go to any nursery that sells their plants, like Armstrong Gardens and Rogers Gardens, and Monrovia's will likely be the best looking (and most expensive) in the nursery. Yeah, you can get by on cheap stuff, but sometimes only the best quality will do. And quality is stressed from start to finish, from the soil mixture they make and use, to the hand weeding, watering, packing, and the delivery. Being a plant/animal physiology major in college and lifelong gardener, I can fix even bad inferior plants most of the time. I guarantee nothing. But Monrovia guarantees their plants will last at least one year. I watched their expert staff really examine the parent tree where they take the grafts - like a tightwad watches his money. Lots of care when using rooting solution and placing them into mini pots, and checking the greenhouse temperature, bacteria and fungal counts and humidity to give that plant the best possible chance to survive. There are grounds crews that prune plants during the low season, and deadhead as needed. Ha ha, dead head doesn't mean, "fans of the Grateful Dead." This terms is removing spent flowers that zap energy out of a plant. There are computers that help monitor everything. The place is expansive, with their own river and fishing hole, great even if there is ever a problem with their municipal water supply. The don't sell annual plants like pansies, poppies, or tomato plants anymore. But for flowering, fruit/ornamental trees, and shrubs such as gardenias, roses, dipladenias, they're first rate. They don't give tours, at least the last time I checked. It's out in the boonies near Visalia But finding a healthy, beautiful Monrovia plant is easy as pie. Don't be shocked that something "rooted" in Monrovia is tops in their class.
