Please go back to the lamb chops, don't cheap out and charge the same amount by getting a different cut and still charge $35 (to the new owners). This (stone stew) location is my favorite Persian restaurant. The service, the food, and convenience is great. Wasn't a lamb chop lover until this location. Food is still good but please go back to the original cuts and menus (keep your chef & front person). First image is what we got. Second and third image is what I was expecting.
I'm surprised there aren't more reviews for this place! We came here on a monday lunch and it was completely empty until the end. We were immediately seated and handed water, warm lavash and butter. We ordered the Torghabeh Special dish for 2 people and the portion was huge! I think this portion is big enough for 4 people! The chicken thigh was the best chicken thigh kebab i've ever had. It was super juicy and flavorful. The koobideh was also super juicy and had really strong flavor that complimented the fluffy hot rice well. Out of the three meats, my least favorite was the beef filet, which is usually my favorite! Not that it was bad, it was really good! it's just that the other meats tasted sooo good it really outshined the beef filet. I look forward to coming back and with more people to try more foods! Highly recommend!
Ordered the Fereydunkenar Fish Kabob with Rice and Tomato and the Gorgan Chicken and Koobideh Kabob With Rice and Tomato. All the kabobs were well-seasoned and the delicious. I appreciated the salmon and chicken kabobs the most. The rice was also very flavorful. The tomato was a nice addition. The service was fast and responsive, and the ambiance was casual.
Pretty good Persian restaurant on the outskirts of downtown. They have a few parking spaces in a lot dedicated to the restaurant which is nice. It was empty on a Monday evening, with just a handful of people picking up to go orders. The restaurant had no music on which made it really quiet with no additional diners. There was complimentary bread, and I asked for the side of mint and onions as that's my favorite part of Persian restaurants. It was a little difficult to eat with the thicker bread, as I'm used to lavash instead, but still really great combo with the butter! Ordered the Torgahbeh for 2, which came with 2 huge plates of rice, koobideh, chicken (you can choose between breast or thigh) and a beef filet. It also came with roasted tomatoes, yogurt sauce, and a cucumber salad. Also ordered the kashke bademjan which was really tasty. Sucker for eggplant anything. The meats were grilled perfectly, and the koobideh will always my favorite. Great flavor and would recommend!
Amazing food! I loved coming here as a tourist --not once, but TWICE in the span of five days-- in San Jose. Their original dizzi sangi (دیزی سنگی) is fantastic -- came in piping hot from the kitchen, and the meat and potatoes and the chickpeas tasted fresh and delectable. Service was fast and friendly! I also appreciated the casual but cozy interior decor of the restaurant, especially their traditionally styled doors. My only suggestion would be that they could play traditional Persian music instead of English songs! All in all, loved this place! A hidden gem!
Craving for some authentic Persian food got us ordering a couple of items from Stone Stew and the food was finger licking good. Ordered Kashke bademjan which was very rich in ingredients and filling at the same time. The highlight of the order definitely was their speciality - Mashad stone stew. This came along with sides of torshi ( mixed pickle) , Shirazi salad and yogurt with shallots and this definitely was stewpidly good!! Just the prefect amount of cooking that went in to make the stew delicate and not crumbling. Every bite was heavenly. Would definitely make it a point to pay them a visit and try the other items ( read kebabs) on the menu hopefully soon!!
My husband and I adore Stone Stew. We actually had our court marriage party there four years ago. We love all of their kebabs- ranging from the chicken thigh, ground chicken, ground beef, and lamb chops. Their kebab meat is so tender and flavorful. How they get the meat so tender- I'll never know. Their saffron rice is decadent and oh so fluffy! I love to put a pat of butter in the middle of the hot steamy rice and have my way with the meal. Furthermore I really like their bread that comes with mint, onion, and butter. All I can say is that we love Stone Stew and prepare for the best food coma ever!
LOVE this place! They don't serve alcohol, so maybe that's why so many get it as take out. We dined in and loved every bite of food that we ate, plus we had plenty to take home as leftovers. The hummus is divine! We added that to our shared kebob platter. It says it's for 2 ppl but it could probably feed 3. Do yourself a favor and head over there!
Stewpid Good It's shamefully reductive to reduce a nation's culinary heritage to just one or two line items. Surely, India is more than just curry; Japan has more to offer than ramen and sushi; and Mexico brings lots to the table beyond tacos and burritos--the latter of which isn't even really Mexican, but I digress. This brings us to Iranian (i.e., Persian) cuisine, which has been boiled down to just kabobs and rice. Not that there's anything wrong with kabobs and rice, but surely there's more to centuries-old culture than meat and rice. Fortunately, Stone Stew is here to up the game and increase one's foodie expertise. The Good: *Kashke Bademjan (Eggplant, fried mint, garlic, and whey) app is a must try. Reminiscent of a creamy yet chunky baba ganoush sans the smoky flavor. The creamy whey and fried mint really took this dish to another level by giving it a little crunch and some herbal undertones to combat the strong eggplant flavor. The complimentary warm barbari bread made an ideal edible utensil. *Their house specialty is their eponymous "stone stews," which is known as ābgoosht or dizi, which refers to the stoneware it's served in. These require diner participation to strain the liquid out of the stew into an accompanying empty bowl and then mash the meat, beans and veggies into mush. The combo of melt-in-your-mouth tender lamb and broth/veggie mix has a sweet and earthy complexity that's sublime. *Their meat kabobs (yes, I had to try) are actually fantastic, and I'm picky about my kabobs. The beef koobideh (ground beef) was tender and flavorful, but their Gorgan chicken thighs were exceptional. Marinated and grilled to perfection, they took "boring" chicken and made it sexy and delicious. *Décor is gorgeous. From the blue azure door to the faux stone walls, you really get the impression of dining in the streets of Tehran. The Meh: *Staffing shortages on our last visit made dining in a little weird. I guess they're primarily focusing on their deliveries as that's all the food we saw go-out on our visit The Ugly: *Neighborhood this location is in is a little shady but should be fine during most of the day. TLDR: Some of the best Persian food I've ever had. Run, don't walk here.
I found myself doing it again. I've been raving about this place for years, but only now am I reviewing it. About 2 months ago, I ate at this location for a weekday lunch. I was surprised that it was easy to get seated. Meal was delicious and service was great. I used to go to their other location, and I've converted many of my friends to eat Stone Stew. I'm reviewing their Torghabeh special dish delivered to our home. We always order this, and it never disappoints. The koobideh and chicken is perfect for the wifey and kids. Tender and spiced just right. I'm always the one having to eat the filet because it's either too beefy or spices don't mesh well for the rest of the family. I'm not complaining that's for sure. The Shirazi (cucumber and tomato salad) with yogurt compliments the meal well. They also provide one container of rice and plenty of bread even for our to go order. My wife did complain that we got more rice eating at the restaurant, but we could have ordered an extra dish with our Torghabeh and she may have forgotten. Regardless our family was well fed on this meal! I've been eating Persian food monthly since one of my good friends in HS (about 30 years ago) introduced me to the best place in the Bay Area called Maykadeh in SF. Go ahead look it up. However, I now live in San Jose and Stone Stew takes care of most of that longing.
Got take out from here - everything was absolutely delicious and fresh. We ordered the Torghabeh Special Dish ($51.83) for two people that came with: 2 Skewers Koobideh Kabob (Ground Beef, Onion & house Spices). 1 Skewer Chicken Kabob (Tender Chicken Breast or thigh with Saffron & fresh Lemon juice). 1 Skewer Lamb Filet (Lamb Filet marinated with extra virgin Olive oil & house Spices). 2 Rice plates, 4 Tomatoes, 1 Shirazi Salad, 1 Yogurt. Also ordered the Mashab Stone Stew ($18.35) - hearty with tender, fall apart lamb shoulder. The thick creamy yogurt paired perfectly with the beef stew, rice, and kabobs. The meal also came with plenty of flatbread. Portions are very generous and the packaging was so careful too!
The food is phenomenal as always! Today was my first time dining inside the restaurant, which I had previously thought was just a kitchen or rarely open. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the inside is. It makes sense now, as I had lived by the original location and now live near this second one. It's been wonderful to experience the same great food at a more convenient spot. Thank you for the consistently amazing meals and for making my dining experience so enjoyable!

Came in on a Friday night. Was seated immediately. We enjoyed the Torgabeh Special Dish For 2 People. It included 2 ground beef skewers, filet skewer and chicken skewer, 2 tomatoes, 2 plates of rice, shirazi salad. Shallot yogurt and bread. You get a choice of breast or thighs. We choose the chicken thighs and it was so juicy. The ground beef was so flavorful. The shallot yogurt is amazing on the bread and meats. Restaurant was clean and inviting. read more
The portions are pretty large here but so are the prices. It took a while to get the food and there was only one person to help out. All kebabs were tender, though I wish there was more to my plate then rice and kebab for the price I paid. They do keep it clean and honestly the flatbread is killer so you win some you lose some. We were told we could request more flatbread but when we did so, no more bread came, so that sucks. I've definitely had better here and the kebabs were better than the stew so don't go for their namesake instead, if you do decide to come here. read more

One of the best Kobedeh I had Clean place, good service positive attitude smiling what is wrong with you not to come and eat here at Stone Stew .. I recommend 200% you will enjoy I liked the settings it's casual I loved it . read more

This is kabob made from a stove top, not a bbq, this is disgusting. Never coming back here again. Persians, trust me, this is the last Persian restaurant you should go to. Go to Negeen, Chelokabobi, Yas, or Caspian. read more

We were told by our sister in law that the food was amazing ! When we got there the atmosphere of the restaurant was cold, service was below average and the food was horrible. Our sister in law was shocked at how the food had gotten since a month ago. See pictures compared to today. Guess which is from a month ago and which is from today ? In summary, horrible food, bad service and a waste of money. Will not go back there again. read more
Loved everything here. I am still enjoying the flavor of my lamb chops, so delicious, tender, well marinated...i loved it so much that I refused to brush my teeth as I do religiously after each meal because I wanted to keep that flavor on for a while! I went today for a colleague farewell lunch and, as expected (based on my previous experiences in the sister restaurant on Saratoga ave) this restaurant was nicely decorated (love those tiles depicting Iranian rural scenes), pretty colors and decor yet pretty simple and comfortable as well. Perfect for groups for not huge interior. I immediately loved it because of...that pretty photogenic door:). Food wise, I knew what I wanted. Even the menu is so pretty, depicting some pictures of city and rural landscapes from Iran as well as very clear pictures of what is every dish about. So no way to get confused. I knew my thing was the lamb chops and they were superb. I exchanged the rice with some salad, and my only advice is to please not put those black pizza olives (those are the worst olives ever, I can say I am an olive connaisseur and those pizza ones do not add any flavor to the salad. I know olives are not part of Persian cuisine, so is ok to leave those aside, i get mine home. Of if add olives, please use Kalamata or other high quality ones. All the appetizers were excellent, loved also the yogurt bitter drink, it goes so well with the meat. The desserts were excellent too, I have to break my keto diet to try that ice-cream that has that characteristic rose flavor and aroma, plus some other sweets we shared. Advice: if you are Indian, please be aware that this food is NOT spicy and you, as probably will be like many of my colleagues and find it bland. Vegetarians in my group were not very happy with the options for them, so if you are a picky eater check the menu before going. read more

This small family-owned Persian restaurant was an amazing host for 22 colleagues and I in our Support Our City: Lunch with Colleagues program from SJSU's College of Professional & Global Education. Stone Stew was great in ensuring that the food was ready and warm when we showed up for our 1-hour lunchtime event; tables were beautifully set and the place was clean. We had pre-ordered a set menu of kubideh (ground beef) kabab, chicken kabab (breast and thigh), rice, tea, and the restaurant added assorted sodas, salad, bread, yogurt dip with mint, onion, and other herbs. Overall, the food was delicious, plentiful (we all had leftover to-go boxes) and was served by a super friendly waiter, Carlos, and the manager, Sogans, who happens to be the daughter of the owners. Thank you very much, Stone Stew, for being such great hosts with awesome food. We will be back to try your other food. read more

Can't speak for their dine in experience but got the beef koobideh for takeout. Most noticeable immediately was the rice completely lacked salt. It was seasoned but the complete lack of salt made the rice really bland, to the point that it was almost tasteless. It's also compounded by the fact that there was a LOT of rice compared to beef, so most of the meal was overall bland, had to add salt for it to be serviceable. The beef was decent, nothing standout though. read more

Yes. They have fesenjan. But their koobideh is the best. Baghli Polow is bae too. Barg filet mignon tiny steak is 2nd after beef koobideh. Eggplants with eggs or eggplants without eggs is very good too. Eggplant with beef stew is very good too.…
When is happy hour and what does it include?
There is no happy hours. Some occasions of Persian celebrations they have Saturday night dance and music. Sometimes Kala Baceh (Lamb Head soup) on those 3-4 persian celebrations. Call! They closed every Monday on Saratoga but not 4th st.
Is this affiliated with the one in West San Jose?
The Stone Stew location on Saratoga was in the same complex as Harry's Hofbrau, which has closed. The building is going to be torn down for new construction.
