Covered bridges have always fascinated me, but it wasn't until about May of last year that I decided to begin to seek them out. Georgia has approximately 16 covered bridges around the state of various lengths. Many of them were built by Horace King, a former slave who earned his freedom by being the master of his trade or by his son Washington King. (see my Red Oak Covered Bridge review for more info on Horace: http://www.yelp.com/biz/red-oak-creek-covered-bridge-woodbury#hrid:CavIunzkcdi5LPRW9vDS-A ) HISTORY OF STONE MOUNTAIN BRIDGE Built in 1892 by Washington King using the Town Lattice method, it was originally located in Athens, Georgia @ College Avenue. It was built to span the 162 feet required to cross the Oconee River. Mr. King won the contract to build the bridge with a bid of $2,470 (which online calculators say is about $63,000 in today's dollars). He also built Watson Mill Covered Bridge (see review: http://www.yelp.com/biz/watson-mill-bridge-state-park-comer-2#hrid:wsV8FC0rGvFIoXYT6lQ1pA ) and Euharlee Creek Covered Bridge. The bridge was condemned/decommissioned in 1963 and sold February 18th, 1964 for $1. It was moved to it's current location in Stone Mountain Park in March of 1965 at a cost of $18,000 and reduced 11 feet to it's current 151' length. I wish I would have known it had been condemned prior to driving a car over it 50 years after it was deemed unsafe... LOL! O_o FROM A SLAVE STORY TO BURLESQUE SHOW Today it spans a portion of Stone Mountain Lake to reach Indian Island picnic area. It's been called the College Avenue bridge, the Oconee River bridge, and Effie's bridge after a nearby bordello (a.k.a brothel). To this day Effie's is memorialized in a comedy/dancing/strip tease vaudeville burlesque revue called "Effie's Club Follie." The show has been described like this: "Think of it as a combination between MTV's 'Jackass' and the talent portion of the Miss America pageant." History can be fun and it's hilarious to see where a little research can take you. A slaves story to a modern day burlesque show... life is indeed colorful. THE VERDICT Anywhoo, Stone Mountain Bridge is a beautiful structure that has been restored from it's condemned status to light traffic use. It makes an excellent backdrop for wedding pics or vintage family photos. I went with fellow yelper Jamarcus T who is currently the DUKE of Stone Mountain Park and even he was not aware of this bridge. It's sort of hidden if you aren't looking for it, but the yelp map I set up should easily guide you to it if you are interested in bridges as I am. But don't expect to see Effie's brothel girls hanging out on the other side of this landmark... this is a family park for crying out loud!!! LOL Yelp100 [46]

Watch out for the robber barons that hide in the rafters! This is a great little bridge that connects you to an island of hiking. Super easy for children and even allows dogs! While walking there, we saw three paddle boarders who were enjoying a quiet afternoon on the lake. They paddled right under the Bridge.

Before you do anything, after you find this bridge tucked away in the far corner of stone mountain park, take a minute, have a seat at one of the nearby park benches, and just listen to the sound of the bridge as a car crosses it. Yes, it creaks and jostles, but that's a kind of charm and character that you just don't hear all to often, while you're shooting down an interstate. Now that that's done, The covered bridge at stone mountain is one of the areas that if you're going just for the mountains, or you don't have a "what's down there" mindset, you'll miss it, and that's a shame. Located just before you reach the roundabout, hang a sharp right and take and soak it all in, but keep in mind only one car can cross at a time. On either side of the bridge, you get to see Stone mountain's lake up close, along with a passing kayak or school of ducks/geese. Very nice place to have a picnic, or as I stumbled across by accident, a wedding (sorry guys). It's one of those "just when you thought you'd seen everything" at stone mountain, here you are with another place to snap some photos. Check it out!

I've been here before for one of the Halloween events, but this day in particular I was here to actually enjoy the park in broad daylight and not at night. This is definitely the place to get a good workout in. You can walk around the mountain, which is a 5 mile walk or you can walk up the mountain which is 1 mile up. Honey, let me tell you that 1 mile up is not a joke, but you feel so good once you get to accomplish it and see all the other people attending to walk up the mountain. This is a experience for all age groups. The elderly were out there. The young was out there. The middle age was out there. Everyone was there having a good time, exercising and getting in a good stroll in the park. The Rangers are also out in the park for any assistance that you need as well. I thought I was gonna need them plenty of time when I attempted to go up the mountain, but I did just fine and I survived. I prefer to go around the mountain in the 5 mile walk where you see lots of people either on bikes, skates or walking their dog or pushing their kids in strollers it's a great experience and a good walk especially after the weather is decent. Now because I had such a good time, I have to look into getting a pass

When…read moreI was there, I observed a kids soccer game, picnickers, hikers, dogs being walked by their owners, Girl Scouts having a meeting, fisherpeople, photoshoots, children playing, birthday parties, and people just chilling by the lake. Seriously, that's nearly everyone who wants to be outside! Regarding hiking, the trails are not marked very clearly. The map doesn't show all the turnoffs, and it gets confusing. Maybe it's this way to give you a sense of adventure? At least it's tough to get really lost since you're often within sight of houses or the road. Beautiful woods! As for restrooms, there was a porta potty in the parking lot adjacent to the playground by Lake Erin, and the map indicates that there are other restrooms in Henderson Park too. Speaking of maps, I might recommend a quick peek at one before you go since the park can be accessed from different roads (Henderson and Livsey). Didn't get to explore the other side of the park with the native plant and wildlife walk this trip but next time!

This is a great neighborhood park. If I lived nearby, I'd take a walk here every chance I could. In addition to the trails, there are athletic fields, a kids play area and a great wide deck where people can look out at the lake or eat a nice lunch. There is a lot of parking and the park itself is well-maintained. I was able to find a map of the park trails online, and it was helpful but trail maps aren't perfect. I tried to walk as many of the trails as I could, but I was turned around a lot. We'd also had a lot of rain prior to my visit so a lower trail path by the lake was flooded. There is a small waterfall in the park, and I think I saw it but I'm not sure. There were a lot of rock formations in the creeks/streams, and none were labeled. I went to Henderson Park with a friend who needed to use the bathroom. The main bathrooms are located on the west end of the park by the soccer fields. On the east end of the park, there are port-a-potties. There are no bathrooms near the kids park which was a surprise and why I mention where the bathrooms are located. Overall, I'm glad that I gave Henderson Park a visit. The people who live nearby are lucky to have it.

There's parking less than a half mile of the main entrance the only thing about that is you have to get there early . Parking lot holds maybe 25 vehicles. When I pulled in there were 6 cars. I entered the trail on the south entrance. I saw no one ! I was looking around and behind me to make sure it was okay as I was alone. I finally came up behind 2 guys that were walking up ahead. I had been out there maybe 20 min. Saw a large Buck (deer) tried to get a pic but he ran when I pulled out the phone . The trails are completely paved with several wooden bridges along the way. Off pavement trails throughout the park. I did not venture off bc again I was alone and I'm not really familiar with the park. Great park to get you in top tier shape. Winding curves and elevation along the trail. Plenty of shade as the trees hover over . It reminds you of Stone Mountain Park just not as large. Idea weather 80 degrees low humidity. Managed to get in 4 miles. I most definitely will be back .

It was semi difficult hike just because we live in Florida and use to live in Illinois (AKA Flatland), but we did it. The easiest way to this is from the parking lot, walk to the left and walk down the stairs. Keep walking on the boardwalk and watch for holes in the boardwalk. When the boardwalk is done, keep walking and then you will come to trees, the trees have steps made from the trees, & carefully watch your step and go down. I actually scooted my butt down and then climbed the tree steps. It was not bad, just something I'm not accustomed to. You will see the water and rocks moving and it is just so beautiful. People walk through and sit in the water and take pics. Be careful when you walk through it can be slippery. We had water shoes. Water is so refreshing. We actually walked the long way, which is walking to the right of the parking lot to the start of the boardwalk. We didn't want to walk down the stairs bc they looked pretty steep. It really is amazing. I'd say you will be here about an hour or two. Parking is free and there are a bunch of signs you need a fishing license. Which we don't have. We just parked And walked!
