"Do you need something?" I walked in on a Tuesday, just before the dinner rush. There were a few customers there already, some sitting at the bar, others placing to-go orders, and some scattered tables. In evaluating the relaxed pace of the two young ladies behind the bar and one the floor, this was not their busy time. I sat at the bar, looking at their beer menu on the wall and compared to their online descriptions, trying to decide what I'd like to try. Several minutes passed without acknowledgment from either staff members. No napkin, no "I'll be with you in a sec!" that's typical of any establishment. I am not inexperienced with restaurant operations; this was uncomfortably unusual behavior. As if I wasn't welcome there for some reason. Finally, after enough time had passed to where I was contemplating just leaving, one of them finally looked at me while she was walking by and uttered that phrase. I was so caught off-guard that I stammered while asking for a flight. I picked the four that interested me, she poured them, then left. No engagement, no conversation about the beers, nothing typical of a brewery proud of its product. The attitude reminded me of another metro Detroit brewery's snobbish standoffishness. Like how they're xenophobic about anyone who isn't a regular but how does one become a regular if they don't welcome you in the first place? After other customers came in, sat near me at the bar, were obviously also first-timers, immediately welcomed with menus and told of the dinner specials, that's when I knew. I was not welcome there. And the only reason I can surmise is my appearance. My behavior wasn't it (and I'm familiar enough with reactions to Internet reviews that are atypical to immediately blame the reviewer instead of considering uncomfortable possibilities). I was received brusquely, not offered a food menu, and only got one check-in -- again, unusual behavior for a brewery and I've been to countless ones around the country. It struck me that my last experience with implicit bias was also in the Traverse City region. I hated to admit the possibility but the anecdotal evidence was clear. I imagine that if I'd been a White man in a collared shirt and chinos, my experience may have been different. Obviously, I can't prove it and if there's an owner response to this review, it'll be full of cliches about how this isn't who or what they are, etc. The establishments in downtown are far more welcoming, so it was a relief when my fellow conference attendees mercifully texted me to say where they were going for dinner. I paid my bill with a modicum of a tip and resolved to strike Stone Hound from my list. For the rest of my business trip, I spread my money instead to places that didn't treat me like an unwanted outsider. Plenty of them in TC, including another brewery in town. read more

Our bartender was great and we also had the pleasure speaking with Chris. I enjoyed the conversations and allowing us to sample a bunch of the brews on tap. Corners sour ale was absolutely delicious if you're looking for a good sour. Having indoor and outdoor seating was a nice option to have as well. The decor inside was cool and the place was very clean. We enjoyed the smash burger and Nashville Hot sandwich. read more

I guess that they have a taco Tuesday. I saw the menu, it looked good but I had had an early dinner at home. It looked like there was a beef option and an "impossible" meat option. I just ordered a kombucha- yooper berry. I was hoping for the ginger one or the tehachapi pineapple one, but the flavors rotate. I have to bribe myself to exercise, so I walked on the tart trail nearby, played one round of pinball (there are 3 machines here) and drank my 'bucha and went home. The pinball machines they have are: Addams family, No Fear, and Baywatch. Love me some pinball. read more

Great vegan/vegetarian options! You can sub an impossible burger or a vegan chicken patty for all the sandwiches. The chickpea salad for a side is a must try! The beer selection was good and bartenders were helpful when making a selection. The area inside was smaller than it looks from the road - so if busy it might be difficult to have your own space. They have community tables (long tables) and also plenty of outdoor seating. Anticipate you will be sharing a table/ space with others. read more

OMG, so much yes for me here! Microbrewery with gluten-free drinks as well? Yes! 100% vegan food offerings? Yes! Friendly, helpful staff? Yes! Location right off a bike trail? Yes! Outdoor seating? Yes! Views of Lake Michigan? Yes! Pinball? Yes! Casual atmosphere? Yes! Compostable leftover boxes? Yes! Real, reusable dishes and flatware? Yes (for the most part)! I ordered the Tempeh Bowl with the spicy mayo and agave mustard dressing on the side (since I don't generally like mayonnaise or mustard). However, it's vegan mayo, which I hadn't considered (never tried it before), and it's really good! I loved my dish and would definitely order it again. I also tried my husband's Sweet Potato and Black Bean Bowl, and that was really good, too. The portions were generous, and my husband even had leftovers. So, the one thing I found odd was that the forks were plastic, while the spoons and knives were metal. Not sure why they wouldn't go ahead and offer metal forks as well for those dining in. Stopped in for beer and snack after riding some trails in TC. I was greeted by the bartender, he was friendly and helpful. I asked to try a few different beers (Amber, IPA and the Kolsch). All the beers were good, but the bartender told me the Headwaters IPA was their original first brew, I went with it. I settled on Chicken Wings and their signature IPA. The wings were fantastic and paired well with the beer. I ordered another beer, a Kolsch, to put out some of the flames from the wings...both beers held their own, solid brews. read more

Neither my husband nor I drink much alcohol. So I will not be able to speak to the quality of the beer at this brewery. . However, the food was absolutely outstanding! I eat a whole food plant-based diet, and my husband frequently eat's the same. We have quite a few vegan choices where we live, but most of it is a little higher end. This was so fun bc it was casual plant based food - that was exceptional. I had a carrot and quinoa burrito, spiced perfectly with berbere. So incredibly good - I will be craving that one! My husband had the sweet potato and black bean burrito that was perfection. Both meals were served with corn tortilla chips. At the suggestion of our server, we added a lovely, roasted salsa to scoop. Of course, we both enjoyed our respective beverages... Cultured Kombucha for me and a Northwood Rootbeer for the hubs. Those are always great choices when in Northern Michigan. Cute ambiance, view of the lake, inside and outside seating. Great service! This is a winner. Can't wait to come back. Stone Hound was the venue for my husbands company party and I was really blown away by how absolutely perfect they were. Service was quick and attentive throughout the night and they put up with our very large (sometimes a bit rowdy) group like absolute champs. We had a lot of carnivores among us who were skeptical of a plant based menu- and literally everyone I spoke to absolutely RAVED about the food once they tried it. I personally tried the wings and "holy grail" impossible burger and both were truly amazing. Beer options spanned a lot of different categories- sour, stout, IPA, etc. and they also had seltzer and NA options so there really is something for everyone. 10/10 recommend! read more

They say location is everything, but in this case location isn't nearly as important as the beer, the food and the brewery itself. So glad we stopped!! Once of my favorite breweries. The owner is usually around helping, and is always friendly and polite. The bartenders are always knowledgeable, and offer great service. The beers are delicious. I always get cans or growlers to go home, especially the cherry sour. There's a built in food truck window for a vegetarian taco truck called rad-dish which is actually delicious as well. It's a bit outside of TC, but the brews and views are worth the drive. read more

This brewery has been on our list of places to try for the past several months. Being in TC on a regular basis, we try to keep up with all the new spots in the area. Stone Hound is a cool brewery just outside of the hustle of downtown TC. The brewery itself is nicely decorated with a few pinball games. We ended up sitting at the bar and enjoying a few beers. This was our first stop of the day so we needed to pace ourselves. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of beers offered. We also decided to order a few things off the menu. The Mexican fries were delicious. We grabbed our TagaBrews, the cutest hound dog charm & a few stickers. We love our collection of brewery merch. I stopped here on my drive from Traverse City to The UP... I accidentally stumbled upon it while stopping at the local Post Office as it sits behind it a little bit. The people working were super friendly and helpful as I tried a few samples and ended up getting two different beers - both of which were excellent... the chicken sandwich was very good as were the fries... great little spot for good food and local brew at a good price... highly recommend! read more

Rainy day in T.C. So decided to check a few drinking establishments. Stone Hound didn't disappoint. The Power Animal & Sandcastle Summer Ale were very nice sipping at the bar. We were basically leaving from out mini vacay and wanted a bite to eat. We also wanted to go to a brewery so we looked on the map and this was super close. We skimmed the menu of beers and food quick and decided it would be good! It's literally right off the lake, great location! Inside the bar top was so pretty. Not too big inside, but has a good amount of seating. The beers we got we thought were very tasty, and at a very good price point. Now the food, again I said we skimmed it so we didn't really read. It's 100% plant based and we had no idea. Lol. But it was very good! The vegan ranch was so good and the buffalo chicken bites were 100! My kids devoured the pretzel bites. It is baffling why the owner would create an entire non-vegan menu when the food is all essentially the same. Now when I call for a pickup order, I have to be very careful to remember that this is a non-vegan establishment and specify that I don't want animal products. Also, their vegan menu has shrunk in half. There are now far less options for those with said lifestyle. They even got rid of their tastiest item, the black bean burger, which was the main reason I would eat there. I will still make a pickup on rare occasions, but my enthusiasm for this place has dwindled. read more

As vegans, we were so happy to find this place -- the Nashville Hot "chicken" was super tasty, and though I wouldn't say it was particularly spicy or hot, I enjoyed it. Very chill spot! There are a million breweries in and around TC to choose from, and many far more established. Buuut I think this one is worth making the list of "To Try". We had a big group of friends that had just finished the Vasa trail snowshoe loop and Stone Hound was right around the corner. It overlooks the water (by way of a parking lot, but still!) and has nice long tables to accommodate bigger groups or a few small ones. The beer selection was great, lots of different styles to choose from, and the Rad.ish food window was a huge bonus! Great beer-- the Jam Sesh is my favorite, and the last time I went they even had it in slushie form! Sounds weird, but was exactly what I needed in the heat. Stumbled upon this place while riding the TART Trail. Staff was super friendly and helpful! Hubby and I ended up sharing a flight of 5. We couldn't pick a favorite as they were all excellent.
