This was the first time that I've had a chance to sample beers at Silver spruce brewing. I must've driven or rode my bike by that location 20 or 30 times before stopping in on Friday. Apparently the brewery used to be a family video store, but the brewery was built about seven years ago. They have a super nice patio with a cool fire pit (I went inside due to a lot of rain), a food truck was also at the premises (but I did not order from them). I was greeted right away by the bartender and we discussed a few beers I might like. I ended up ordering a Marzen style (I was told by the bartender it was some of their Oktoberfest that had been fermenting for an additional five months). It was a nice beer, crisp taste with a little more hop profile than what I'm accustomed to in a Marzen. The high top table that I sat at was close to the metal brewing equipment, but had a view of the TV. I enjoyed the music which seemed to be a little bit of everything rock. The second beer I ordered was Schwarzbier, a style that I don't order very often. That beer had a darker color to it, but was really well done with a great profile and caramel notes on aftertaste. I liked it a little bit more than my first beer. If you're looking for a place to try some new beers, I would recommend silver spruce. They aren't trying to do a ton of everything (lots of food or multiple beer choices), but what they are doing is providing a cool place to have a good beer. read more

The bartender was very polite, and very informative once I was finally able to order. Ordering a beer wasn't hard for me considering their mid size menu. I went with the apricot wild ale, aged in white wine barrels. This was my favorite beer on our tour. The aged white wine barrels was just supreme. For some odd reason it was very loud. I figured with outdoor seating doors rolled up that it wouldn't be that loud but it was hard to have a conversation. Overall, this place was wonderful. The beer was so good. Sadly it was our first stop, and I only had one beer before we were on our way to the next location on our tour. Will definitely be my go to brewery when I go back to traverse city. read more

The food here is from the bear and bull food truck which had plenty of options, especially burgers, and it was phenomenal! Blueberry sour is where it's at!! If you enjoy a crisp, tart sour then this one hits all the right notes. Great bartenders and cool indoor/outdoor space with strong vibes. Came here for dinner during a stay in April this year. We really loved the building and the atmosphere. Everyone seemed really chill and the set up was similar to a brew company we have at home. You walk up to the bar to get your drinks and sit down with them. We wanted food too, which we were seated for and had waitstaff to our table. Then I thought the whole going up to the bar thing was kind of silly if we could have had it brought to the table. Anyway, it didn't matter because our food took forever to get to the table. I'm pretty sure we had tables in after us that got their food first. The food was good but kind of sub par for what you pay for. We still had to go up to the bar for just the brews. I love sour beers, and they had a wonderful selection this spring. It will be a fun stop to check in and see how it's grown in the coming years. read more

When we went to get our drinks at the bar the bartender let us know a bus was coming in and it was going to get crazy. I jokingly stated, "yeah, buses suck right". And the two bartenders were in agreement with me. I then told them that I drive one of those buses, and they don't suck. They stuck with the they suck. I told them they make money in sales and tips when a bus comes in, and it keeps people from driving while drunk. The bartender agreed, but still stuck with they suck. I said if they feel that way I won't bring anybody in to their brewery again. His reply, "OK". I left. If I bring in a bus with 20 passengers, at $5/glass(average price from what I saw) they make $100 a round, add a tip to that at the end that's about $120/round if they tip 20%. So sure, that's not $120 in profit, but it goes towards your expenses. An average stop on a bus tour is 45 minutes, how many beers can you do in that time? I know I'm good for at least 2. Why the hell would I support someone that doesn't support me? So if you're a bus company and see this please take note, they think we suck. Take your customer's somewhere that will appreciate them. If you're planning an event for yourself and are using a bus, please take note that they think you suck, and take your friends and family somewhere else. read more

Stopped by with my brother-in-law to catch some live tunes from BLT (Brian and Loren) and drink some local brews. Terrific, low key vibe with a food truck in the lot if you want a bite, and really all around terrific brews. Of course I'm sure the selection various according to the season and time of year, but I feel pretty confident that you can't go wrong with any style: I sampled their Maple Brown (a gorgeous, deep, nutty and smooth Brown), the Irish lager (easy drinking but with lots of flavor) and the Stout (terrifically toasty but still easy to down) but my favorite was the Altbier. Being half German with an uncle from Düsseldorf, I've had Alts right from the source and am used to craft breweries claiming to brew the style liberally, but this was really true to the German fashion-- lovely red brown hue, nice toasty malt and a clean finish, I felt like I was back at Füchslein. Our beertender was friendly and generous with advice, and the clientele the place draws is really just a great bunch of sweethearts. Definitely not a spot to miss for beer lovers in town. read more

Silver Spruce is a good little microbrewery to try out in the Traverse City area. Came in here for a drink and snack. The service was sort of interesting because you had two tabs and two servers, one for food and one for beer. The beer was pretty fair and there were a good selection on the menu at the time. They all looked pretty interesting and there should be something on there to catch your eye. The chips with cheese was really good. It went with the beer and was a good little snack to have.
