The coffee is strong and sweet and smoky, which sounds great on paper but left me a bit meh, but then again I'm Pisces and known for being fickle and capricious, so maybe I'll like it next time. Unfortunately, I'm in the latter category. I should start by saying I'm a fairly simple soul - I look for good food that is reasonably priced when I eat out. While the Annex does do good food, their menu is very very limited (as they don't really have a kitchen to cook anything). Last time I went there were literally only one or two things I would consider ordering off it. Admittedly that was the Xmas menu, but I still remember it being like that before as well. Coupled with the limited options some of the food can be on the more expensive side (for what you get). If you like coffee I think you will probably love this place, if you're like me then you could be a bit indifferent to the whole thing and find yourself thinking about the $5 burgers next door...

Started off with a batch brew made with Nicaraguan single origin from Sample Coffee Roasters. It was much darker than I would normally expect from Sample, but with this darkness came a really nice body and slight english breakfast finish. Unfortunately as the coffee was getting on a bit, many of the florals had flown, but what was left was still a very enjoyable start to the day. But then when the Umami long black came out, the aroma almost had me salivating. A robust and smooth body, it had a perfect balance highlighted with light florals and light winey back end to make it all worthwhile. Basically...yum. Today's specialty being a Single Origin filtered Costa Rica La Violeta. The only drawback being a tendency to over flavour the sandwiches, usually appreciated, but always better when done in moderation. Think, the balsamic vinegar applications and the onion jams, both nice but need to be applied with a lighter touch. Otherwise, highly recommended.

They serve Allpress coffee which is usually ok. Unfortunately the coffee I got was a little weak, this could be down to how busy it was. I also ordered a sausage roll, which was tasty enough. This is a very friendly family-run cafe with seating outside and in. I had scrambled eggs with sourdough toast and grilled tomatoes. I've had the same dish at other places, but this is my favorite because the toast wasn't over toasted to a crispy critter. The eggs were fluffy and a grilled tomato for breakfast really hits the spot. Another time when I came here, I had a perfectly poached egg and a delicious scone with jam and cream. I love the way scones in Australia are more like a tender biscuit rather than the hard triangle that passes for a scone in the States. With the jam, the whipped cream is just a bonus. Also, poached eggs are common, a healthier way to eat an egg. It's a bit out of the way towards the end of the outdoor mall, but we'll worth seeking out.

It must be mentioned that this cafe is also focused on having a wide range of food options [breakfast/lunch/dinner] (which are a tad pricey but compared to other options in Hornsby, might be worth it). Service can be a bit iffy, with several tables staying uncleared for the whole time I was there and staff not being able to explain several items on their menu. And be prepared to carry your own food and drinks with you if you sit upstairs. These guys are open til late, so it's usually packed on any night of the week with students and their laptops using the wifi.
