I am a regular commuter on the ACE train from Stockton to Pleasanton (and BART to SF) and back. Wifi is available in most cars, but it is not very reliable. It'll work in downtown Stockton but thereafter, it's touch and go. Sometimes even connecting to the wifi is slow and failure-prone. You're better off tethering to your phone or getting a mifi if you need to work online while on the train. If you want to rest and/or don't want to hear the obnoxious card-playing loud-conversation morning people who board at Lathrop and thereafter, go to rear car trains for a dimmed quiet car. Just remember when getting off at your stop to move to the middle cars as some stations aren't big enough to allow doors in the rear trains to open (e.g. Pleasanton). Parking at Stockton Station is found in two smallish lots that are walking distance to the station. By the 6:40 train, it's starting to get to the point where you wonder if you'll get a parking spot. The trains themselves are not packed, but most of the time you'll be sitting next to someone over the course of the trip. The conductors are fairly strict about where you place your bags, so always stow them or put them in your lap. They also thoroughly check your ticket validation. Despite these points, the train service is great. Very rarely have they been delayed, and if so, only a by minutes going back home. Overall, it's a smooth pleasant ride. They go slowly through the Altamont, which is also the region where your cell and wifi will fail. The ride itself is only slightly faster than an equivalent drive to Pleasanton BART, with the added advantage of not sitting in morning traffic and hunting for BART parking. I wish they'd improve their wifi service and have food available on the trains. read more

Thank goodness for ACE. I thought I was going to lose my mind commuting in the Bay Area freeway cesspool. The train has given me a large chunk of my life back to sleep, read, or do a little more work. My back aches less and I don't have a bad attitude from dealing with Bay Area drivers when I get home. Very safe and clean trains that run on time for for most part. Fares are comparable to what you'd spend on gas but you can't put a price tag on your sanity. The time I save in the morning isn't much but the payoff is in the evening. Thanks ACE I expect our relationship to last a long time. read more

Ace train station is what I call it!! It's kept up & in a great location... I have nothing but good things to say about this place

Good: I really do like how clean the trains are; the seats are clean, the bathrooms are clean, the passengers are commuters or students trying to get to work or school, etc. The views you get are lovely too! Bad: Trains are frequently late! I get every now and then, but at this point it seems like it's every week. And it's not just 5 minutes (I wish!) but instead closer to 20+ minutes. Once the train was an entire hour late. Very inconvenient for everyone who wants to go home after a long day and have dinner with the family on a Friday night. It's also pretty pricey ($11 RT for example from Tracy to Livermore). Overall it is a nice train, but there are certain things they could do to make it better. read more

I moved from San Jose to Manteca and had to commute to work for about 9 months. The positive thing about the ACE train is that it is clean and the passengers are very professional as well as respectful. Besides that this train service is awful. Though BART is dirty and some of the passengers may be sketchy, it is extremely reliable. The ACE train is inconsistent, ALWAY's breaking down and is late almost every day. If you have a job that is strict on being on-time DO NOT TAKE THE ACE TRAIN. Also, they will cancel routes without notice and you'll end up having to drive after paying over $300 a month for rides. The cost is ridiculous and they are expected to rise. I was miserable and frustrated almost everyday taking the ACE train to work for 9 months. The train broke down once in Fremont and I was stuck sitting on the train for over 3 hours. I was 3 hours late to work and I was expected to be at an important meeting. Situations like this happen on the ACE train ALL the time. Save your self and get a job closer to your place of residence. The extra money is not worth the hassle. Getting my job transferred was God sent because taking this train was such a nightmare. read more

I've been riding ACE for two months now, and I can't imagine having to drive into the Bay Area anymore. I'm already spoiled. The train cars are spotless and comfortable, folks are generally pleasant, and the employees I've interacted with have been courteous and professional. The wifi is spotty for sure, no question about that. Cell service is spotty as well. But I can download Netflix shows and watch something on the way to work rather than gritting my teeth in traffic...so there's no question in my mind that ACE is the best possible way to get to/from Central Valley into the Bay Area. The only things I can really complain about are the announcements about delays. The train will slow down, or stop, and the only announcement is something that doesn't make any sense like "dispatch has to signal us." Look, I get it, you speak 'train', but giving information like that is not much better than just saying nothing. They could literally say 'the train is slowing because of the color blue' and that would make as much sense to me as these announcements. However, that's a small price to pay for not having to deal with traffic! read more

I feel sorry for anyone who has to rely on this train service. In fact, I feel sorry for all of us who pay taxes to help maintain tracks/ service for this route. Went to visit a friend and could not get a ride back to the San Jose because ACE decides to cancel a route without any notification. Learned about it at the train stop when I got there, along with a bunch of other disgruntled commuters. I can understand there might be delays, modifications, emergencies, etc BUT these need to be communicated to riders as promptly as possible. And supposedly, this was not an emergency. When I visited the website multiple times, there was no notice. When I called ACE to check trains a week before, there was notice. When I bought my ticket, no notice. When I rode the ACE into Stockton two days prior, no announcements, no signs. No notice via text or email. Not only that, the ACE site, in the details, says they are under no obligation to provide info or refunds. Really lousy. I take Caltrain and BART regularly as well as the public transport system in other cities and countries. They all have their pros and cons but ALL notify their riders of planned changes. Noncommunication is a horrible habit. The 2 stars is for the ride in. Wifi is bad as others write. Nonexistent. read more

I took ACE Train daily from Lathrop to Pleasanton for about a year. The "wireless" service is spotty, and that's being nice. Some (not all) of the attendants come off as overzealous police academy flunkies who go out of their way to give you a severe tongue lashing, lest you forget to stamp your ticket because you were sprinting to catch the train. Paying customers should not be belittled and talked down to. And they need more departure times. For example, if you work in The City and happen to work late (after 6 pm), well you better have someplace to crash in The Bay, because you won't make make the last ACE Train in time to get home. ACE needs to have a last call 9 pm train back to the Valley, because let's face it, a lot of people work late, and you shouldn't kill yourself trying to make that last train. On the plus side (I suppose) the train is clean -- I gotta hand it to them on that. And unlike the BART, it's pretty rare that you'll see someone holding court in a puddle of their own piss and vomit. It's a great service for working people like me, and beats the hell outta being stuck on the 580 for half of your life. With a few adjustments ACE Train would be phenomenal, but until those changes are made, it will hover just slightly above mediocre. read more

After riding ACE on an almost daily basis for the past 6 months now, my opinion of ACE has soured quite a bit. ACE has begun requiring passengers to remove all bags from unoccupied seats effective immediately. Apparently, there is zero discretion afforded to the staff in regard to enforcing this rule, which leads to staff waking up passengers trying to rest in order to have them remove bags when there are entire quadrants of open seats right across the isle. I completely understand the need to have bags removed from the seats when the train is rather full, but waking up passengers when there are plenty of open seats is absolutely ridiculous. Be reasonable. The other morning, my wife was running late getting to the train and didn't have time to punch her ticket since the train was arriving as she was pulling into the parking lot in Tracy. She got on the train and asked the fare inspector to sign of her ticket like I have seen dozens of other passengers do over the course of the past several months riding the train without incident. Instead of just signing off the ticket, the inspector sits down and demands to see my wife's ID. He threatened to fine her and said she would definitely be fined if he caught her doing this again. This was the first time she had ever done this, which could easily be verified by looking at the handful of used 20-ride tickets that were inside the plastic display sleeve behind her current ticket. Again, be reasonable. ACE is a COMMUTER train service. People run late and life happens. Treat your passengers like customers instead of petty criminals. Don't embarrass one of your regular passengers by demanding to see ID at 6am because one of your fare inspectors is on a power trip. I figured ACE would more sensitive to this sort of plight seeing how ACE does not exactly have a stellar record of on-time success itself. I didn't bust anybody's balls because the train made me 30 minutes late to work last week, so why don't you extend the same courtesy to your passengers as well. A better solution would be to stop using 1980's technology for your ticket validation system. The dot matrix ticket validators are terrible and don't work half the time either. Caltrain and the rest of the public transit agencies in the Bay Area use the Clipper Card system except for ACE and I'm not sure why. Once you add a roughly 5% fare increase on top of this lack of service, you can see why my perception of ACE has changed significantly since I started riding last spring. This isn't enough to make me stop riding since my only other alternative is to drive (which sucks), but I'll probably start riding my motorcycle more often in the spring and summer months instead of taking the train. read more

This station is definitely better than the other one in Stockton...that one is ridiculously ghetto. Both are in pretty crappy areas of Stockton, but this one is definitely newer (looks almost brand new), and is a tad bit safer than the other one. It's really well lit (unlike the other location which is just a big dump), and isn't trashed and dirty like the other station. One thing I do not like is the parking area. It's a really small parking lot, and you can only enter or exit one way. I got annoyed last time I went to pick up someone here because the person in the car in front of me was apparently still waiting for whoever they were picking up. It was impossible for me to get around the person's car because the parking lot is so small that there's no way to pass around cars. I think it's designed more to be a quick drop off/pick up area, but people are stupid and decide to park in the lane instead, causing everyone else behind them to get blocked in with no escape. read more

If you are tired of the commute and live between Stockton and San Jose you might try the Altamont Commuter Express, the ACE train. I have been riding it on and off for a few years and it is a nice break from stop and go traffic. The route is scenic and you can read or visit on the train. There is a major issue in Stockton station, and that is theft around the parking lot. Riders' vehicles parked in the parking lot and on the street were broken into very often. I have seen broken glasses on the ground almost everyday. Then recently, one day it happened to my vehicle. Someone broke the left side window. They did a lot of damages inside the vehicle. I have just filed an incident report. I could not find a tab on acerail.com to file a complaint about the safety and security in the parking lot. I think Ace should take an action on this issue seriously. They should consider hiring a security to patrol the lot. read more

I take the ACErail from Fremont to Great America, and back. 1 stop. Trains are on-time, conductors are friendly, regular commuters are quiet and respectful, the train seats and conditions are newer and better than BART, Amtrak, or CalTrain. Riding my bike, taking my bike on board, or using the Green Shuttle (free) that meets the train is Awesome, and I arrive at work happier than driving my car. The 20-pass ticket is reasonable, slight more than gas, but worth the savings in mental health. read more

I have been riding for nearly 10 years now, and for the most part I am pleased. However, recently they started this asinine policy of no bags on the adjacent seat. This morning, I was the only individual within 20 empty seats and I was asked to remove my bag from the seat next to me. This zero tolerance and zero intellegence approach is harassment of passengers, despite their incompetence of ordering trains without luggage racks. The problem they are trying to solve is when the train is over half full and people tend to be rude and not remove their bags to allow someone to sit down and to that concern I am sympathetic. They take another approach and announce failure to remove bags when asked to allow a passenger to sit down is a citable offense. This all or nothing approach is alienating long-term customers. In addition, their cost of living / inflation adjustment approach to raising fares is discouraging. The passengers have not received any improvement in service. read more

Started taking the train a few months ago and I can tell you that it's certainly reduced my stress level from sitting in traffic. I get to sit in a CLEAN (unlike BART) train car in clean seats and each car has some tables available as well. The staff is warm and friendly and so far I've left two items on the train and both were found, turned in and returned to me. There is WIFI available and I can also use my hotspot to get work done while commuting. It's cheaper than paying for gas in your car to come down and no wear and tear! Only drawback is that it occasionally can run a bit late but again, when you compare it to commuting down 680 it's great. read more

I have been riding for over half a year now, and it has generally been a good experience. I do have concerns with the service. The communication of the status of the service is inconsistent. There is a website, a text notification, a Facebook page and twitter. I subscribe to or follow all of these, but typically only the website has the correct and up to date info. The Facebook and twitter updates are sporadic at best. The text notifications are not reliable. For long delays, after a an hour or two the updates just stop, especially late in the evening. Another concern is communication between the buses that serve the train and ACE. On two occasions that I know of personally, buses have arrived late at the station, and the train departed, leaving passengers stranded for an hour. The most recent occurrence was at Pleasanton, the CCCTA 92x bus passengers literally ran off the bus headed to the train which was sitting at the platform, but the train shut the doors and rolled away, with the passengers running across the parking lot! This is not acceptable service, in my opinion. read more

Wish I could give a rating of zero stars. Since Jan. 2019 the ACE Train has gone from bad to worse. The train is late EVERY DAY, both morning and afternoon. I have been late to work several days each week. The supervisor for Wheels Buses in Livermore and Pleasanton told me this morning that they are tired of asking their bus drivers to wait for the late ACE trains every day and he said they will no longer hold the buses. ACE always has an excuse, iIf it's not one thing it's another. PTC issues, signal issues, mechanical problems, waiting for other trains to clear. It's always something. I love ace! It is cheap. It is clean. There are not many strange people! What more can u ask for from a train station in downtown Stockton! I always feel safe and I usually take the 5 or 6 trains! I really hope ace becomes huge. I literally recommend this train to everyone I know. It does get crowded early on but since Stockton is the last stop it's nice to enjoy a row on my own and stretch out. Scenery is pretty nice in some parts of the ride. The quality of customer service on the train has declined. I've been riding the train and storing my belongings the same way I've been doing it. Now they have to file a report that it wasn't stored properly? Some of the employees on the train used to be polite, now I'm sensing a rude attitude from some of them. Have been taking the ACE train for three months now and already experienced multiple problems: 1.) no sufficient parking to the point of arriving at the station in Manteca, not finding any parking spots, turning back and driving to the Bay Area instead, 2.) parking lots closed at Great America station due to events (so, again, turning back and driving back home), 3.) ticket validation machine not working properly, 4.) Pleasanton parking lot closed due to event, 5.) expensive tickets, 6.) spotty WiFi, 6.) delayed trains (by 15-20 minutes) or trains leaving early. read more

Recently moved to Manteca. First time rider commuting to Santa Clara. Reviews of mismanagement, under staffing, poor customer service, ticketing misinformation, no security, etc...ALL true!! For being in business over 10 years ACE still has not worked out some of the basics. Cost is atrocious at $350 a month (Lathrop to San Jose) and only rising. Go ahead drive your car (unless you have a truck) gas is cheaper then the monthly pass. I received a citation for an over validated 20 trip ticket yet the numbers on the side of the ticket indicating how many rides are left still had rides available. Faulty station machines stamping over previous punches so you have to punch again to get a readable date/time means it's counting more rides then you've actually taken. Not enough days have passed to account for all the rides they say I stole (reason for the citation). You got to be kidding me!! Now I must miss a day of work to go to court to fight it like I'm the criminal. Unacceptable. Beyond irritating!! And all happened before 5am!! The only positives I can note are other passengers are nice and considerate, professional commuters. If you're stuck on a train and no where to go at least the fellow riders are an amicable bunch and it's cleaner then BART (@BART please hurry and finish the new line to the south bay). Due to the volume of people on the road and current traffic conditons this prohibits driving for most, ACE knows this and is taking advantage of the situation. They don't need to care, so they DON'T. We're at their mercy and they know it. read more

I have been a train rider on ACE for almost three years now. The train is very clean and many of the other train patrons are friendly as they strike up conversations that cover a wide range of topics (but most commonly folks are sharing stories and suggestions about food/restaurants). There is a "quiet car" where folks may ride if they want silence/sleep and there is also another train car that offers WiFi to those who would like to work, email, play games, etc (so long as you do so before the WiFi junks out on you while going through the Altamont Pass). The train conductors and workers are very helpful if you have questions and they are rather friendly unless they are flustered with a crazy load of passengers (like when there are 60+ teenagers/students going to or coming home from Great America). During football season, the ACE Train also runs a round-trip course for folks heading over to Santa Clara to watch the 49ers football games. All in all, this is a great service that helps prevent the headache of getting stuck in traffic on the I-580! There are four commuter trains that do daily round-trips. Many folks also use ACE Train to help get to their destination to jump from ACE to the Amtrak train to head elsewhere. All aboard!!!! read more

I've been riding from Fremont to Manteca for just over a year now.This is a good service when it works and is on time. You cant beat the train when travelling between the bay area and the valley when its working. Unfortunately there are daily and weekly delays which leave you stranded wherever you are. The communication is poor at best, the staff are friendly and most of the riders are courteous. With a price hike coming up, and no amenities or improvements I will be looking for alternate transportation, you should too. read more

I've used the ACE train to get between the Bay Area and the Central Valley, and it's always a pleasant ride. As a traveler what I think is my favorite part of this experience is that the regular commuters seem to know one another and have lively conversations, which makes the atmosphere of the train more jovial than other commuter services I've been on. I highly recommend this service for the scenic views as well, and overall just because it's fun! read more

This ACE is missed managed under staffed and force unfair regulations. 1 safty is a huge concern. I called a complaint to a manager regarding speeding a parking rules not being followed. I was told they are understaffed and could not help. 2 they allow niner dans to ride on game day but not regular riders that work in the bay area. This is miss use of public transit and discrimination against those that are not fans but riders that need to get to work. I would like a call back from a board member. I have already begun recording evidance of the failure to enforce codes and regulation. I will also be pulling city codes and measuring spaces to make sure the facility is in compliance. Beats traffic and gas. 30 minutes Fremont to San Jose; 15-20 minutes VTA Light Rail to downtown destination. Total: $13.75 (includes roundtrips). The car would have been close to an hour at rush-hour, plus gas, plus $20 for all day parking. If they advertised it a little better, more would take it. read more

Used the trip advisor to plan my daily commute from San Joaquin to the Bay area and it was terrible. The time and selection of transfer to other services is not efficient and practical. I also applied for the trial and they failed to deliver. Need to add additional trips and better coordination with other Bay area transport services to make this a better option than driving. read more
