Stir-Fry Seminars & Consulting is an awesome place! Rainbow and Lee Mun Wah are phenomenal facilitators. They are direct and gentle, real and kind. They dispel the European narrative which centers White-ness as the crux of American culture and create/hold space for folks of color to share their experiences, while also creating the conditions for White folks and White appearing folks to delve into the driving forces behind their projections of privilege. The basis of the framework is creating understanding through mindful facilitation, so that people may build true community with one another. Lee Mun Wah and Rainbow work seamlessly to interweave people's varying understanding of differences, with peoples experiences, acknowledging each and every person who shares and building bridges between their differences by sharing mindful inquiry models, personal experiences, and interactive activities with participants. Their style of facilitation is needed ALL OVER! It is truly life changing, eye opening, and essential to examining true diversity and its tangible applications which are all too often left to rhetoric. The worst. We had issues at my job including racist behavior by several staff members. Lee Mun Wah and his colleague came to address the situation. The colleague was fine but Lee Mun Wah didn't do what was needed and inflamed the situation. He had the two management folks hash out their issues in front of the staff. He asked one African American woman to chant "you're racist, you're racist" to a white colleague there was already tension with. He tried to bond in an inappropriate way with the line Asian American employee, repeatedly calling her "my Asian sister." He insisted on showing us his film and having us discuss it which took more than an hour during which time we could have worked on specific issues that needed to be addressed. And this was after we said that most of us had seen the film and didn't want it to be part of the training. It was worse than an expensive waste of time it caused a lot of harm. The Black manager ended up being further harassed by the white director and she ended up being asked to leave in an awful way. There was a real opportunity for healing to happen and Stir-Fry productions utterly failed. read more

Public humiliation by this man, this is not Allegedly, this happened to me circa 2016 or 2017: I was a Counseling grad student at the time that this degrading incident happened. He was a guest speaker for our Counseling Department's Seminar (I was a graduate student research presenter as well). We were in Jack Adams Hall conference room and he was giving his lecture presentation to a crowd of faculty, guests, and counseling grad students (approximately 300+ people in the audience). I was sitting on the far left side of the audience and I was wearing a gold tones outfit and had my 'Tignon wrap' (cultural head wrap) which covered part of my long LOCed hair (Hair that took me over 20 year to go out and to maintain myself... This was a form for hair freedom and cultural pride to have my hair in this style after a lifetime of shame and harassment and public shaming of my African Diasporan Kinky hair texture... by everyone I can think of.) As he was lecturing, he stops his train of thought, looks at me, POINTS TO ME and tells the 300+ audience..."See that girl over there (pointing to me way in the back) "She can't work a corporate job with her HAIR like that!".... Then he goes back to his lecture. (What the F&@k= what does my cultural hair type and hair texture (4C textured LOCed hair) have to do with getting my counseling M.S. degree and working? Talk about supporting discrimination based on cultural origin. Ok, I sit there... wanting to hide, and I am sitting their HUMILIATED in front of my peers, and instructors and strangers (300+ people and I am the only one with hair like mine) because everyone is STARING at my hair. This is not Allegedly, this happened: So he just humiliated me, culturally SHAMED me to the world and he normalized his humiliation of African Disaporna's women's hair. What kind of so called cultural consultant does that? I am mad and embarrassed and ended up publicly humiliated and basically in humanistic SHOCK. I became numb to the point I could not even process this. I ended up stuffing it and years later I finally figured out what he did to me (The Crown Act actually helped me process it), then I finally emailed his staff person to tell them what happened. They did not care, nothing was done about it. Can you imagine, being a consultant on culture ideas and then intentionally and willfully, humiliating a BIPOC about her hair in front of people who did not every flinch or call him on his behavior. Stir-Fry Seminars taught me how to strengthen and deepen my facilitation skills. Lee Mun-Wah and Rainbow are gifted, insightful, kind-hearted facilitators, and leaders. Speaking the truth about how systemic oppression impacts our lives and relationships is an incredibly challenging thing, but until we learn how, it will continue. I can't speak for anyone else, but my experience of Lee Mun Wah is that he cares deeply about helping people gain communication and empathy skills so no one's experience goes unacknowledged. I gained a lot of communication skills as well as deep connections with fellow participants. I think it's impossible for anyone in this field to nail it every time, and I imagine there have been some less skilful moments in trainings over the years. A wise teacher hears feedback and integrates it. As someone who wants to work in this feel, I admire all the staff at Stirfry Seminars for being willing to take the risk of making mistakes and being held accountable for them. I am inspired to take the same risks, because not doing so is probably much more harmful than me making my best effort to help people connect across difference. I encourage people to judge the merit of these trainings based on their own experience and research versus basing it on these reviews. Even mine! My boss at my previous job took us to this place for our "retreat". It was horrible. Everything the other reviews say is true. Lee Mun Wah was only capable of reciting and repeating the same spiel that he uses on everyone, no matter the situation. He accused every seemingly white person in the room of being racist, including me. I'm Middle Eastern, and when I pointed that out to him he said "Oh, crazy what's going on over there." He had no interest in learning about us or any particular problems we might have been experiencing. He only wanted to hear the people of color talk about how much their feelings get hurt. Also, $225 for a DVD! That's just being desperate for cash. I would give negative stars if I could. read more

Junk. The facilitator irresponsibly goads and badgers people, eliciting and encouraging bad behavior under the guise of "being real". At the end of the seminar, some people feel smug and others to feel guilty. I have been to two weekend seminars, and was puzzled at how anyone thought they learned anything. I've seen several of the films in which the same thing occurs, though in the films, if people are getting along and understanding one another, the facilitator brings in a shill to stir the pot. Everything ends with people crying, hurling insults at one another. The recipients are mostly White males, who are encouraged to feel shame for everything that people of color and women experience. Shame is big in these seminars. The facilitator acknowledges this and it girds his techniques. At the end of the seminars, participants hug and pretend that they learned something, and vow to be friends forever with the people that, two hours earlier they said that they hated. (Yes, the facilitator encourages people of color to say that they hate White people.) I challenge anyone who represents this organization to show evidence that this 'work' has paid off. This ''facilitator'' came to my work place to teach us about conflict resolution and diversity but he does not understand what diversity is. Instead of teaching how to understand each other, he begets uni-dimensional thinking and is extremely biased. He is condescending and instead of hearing other points of view, he only looks at issues from his own perspective and that goes against critical thinking. He had some good insight about communication but the rest of the so-called workshop was a waste of time. He was also very rude and judgmental at times. If you want to learn about diversity dynamics and issues, I would go somewhere else!!! read more

First of all, I don't like Yelp. I think it has too much influence on the success or failure of small businesses, and like all tech platforms tends to polarize people. I'm writing this review to counterbalance several of the extremely negative reviews on here, because I've studied with the good folks at Stirfry for several years, and have studied mindfulness and facilitation for twenty years. The thing about facilitating diversity trainings (which is not primarily what I do) is that they tend to bring out the most extreme reactions in people. Americans, and particularly white americans, of which I am one, are deeply uncomfortable talking about race, and both people who are oppressing, and people who are oppressed carry trauma around this, because we live in a highly toxic environment when it comes to cross-cultural relationships. So you know where I'm coming from, I'm a white guy in my forties, who came to work with Stirfry because I needed to deepen my skills facilitating multi-cultural groups. The best facilitator I know told me that Mun Wah was the best facilitator he knew. I also believe that this country will never measure up to its potential until it addresses truth in history, which includes the reality that the economic foundation of the US was built on the backs of enslaved Africans, and the land was stolen from indigenous people. As a white person, being in a multi-cultural context that de-centers whiteness is uncomfortable. As it should be. Although I've at times been very uncomfortable in Stirfry trainings, I've never found Mun Wah mean-spirited for a moment, although at times I've been astonished by his directness. The gift I've received, as a white person, is the gift of becoming aware of my impacts on people of color, even when my intentions were otherwise. By having this reflected back to me, what was unconscious- beneath my awareness- has come up into my awareness, where I can do something about it. When I have the presence to receive this information without reacting, blaming, or accusing, I learn a great deal about myself, including things I didn't want to see about myself. This crucial awareness has been transformative for me, building empathy in a way that has deeply changed my outlook. Stirfry will always have my gratitude. I haven't encountered a more systematically skillful approach to developing mindful facilitation skills anywhere. Everything I've learned from Stirfry about reflective listening, mindful inquiry, noticing, tracking group dynamics, getting groups talking amongst themselves, asking targeted inquiry questions, noticing moments of connection and disconnection, tracking intent vs. impact serves me everyday in my work facilitating. Obviously their work is not for everyone, and being in these training spaces is an emotional marathon- but I've been humbled and changed by what Stirfry does, and I know many many people who feel the same way. read more
