Stevens Van Lines (Saginaw, MI) was hired and contracted by me via SafeWay Moving & Storage (Lake Forest, CA) to move our household goods from Southern California to Chicagoland. The "white glove" packing was completed on 8/27/18, goods were loaded on 8/28/18 and delivered on 9/4/18. As there was evidence of damage to some household goods, we had swiftly alerted the broker (SafeWay Moving & Storage) the same day of delivery, asking them to address the issue for us. After the broker confirmed they were getting nowhere w/ Stevens related to any damages, I was informed on 10/18/19 to file an official claim myself, which I did on 10/19/18. Relating to one of our most prized pieces of furniture, our buffet was rebuilt by the driver/team upon delivery. However, when the legs put back on underneath, either the wrong screws were used or they were tightened too much, puncturing the inside of the cabinet from the bottom up, which was completely unnoticeable until we had began loading the cabinet well after the team had gone. Without sending anyone to my property to physically inspect the damage, Stevens had swiftly denied my claim on 10/25, with the following rebuttal, which they continue using today. "As this item is one that would be used on a daily basis it is reasonable to conclude that if the loss occurred while the item was in our custody, it would have been noticed either at delivery or shortly thereafter. The damage/loss for this item was not reported until 46 days after delivery. We find that the 2nd element of Carmack has not been proven. When this shipment delivered you signed the inventories acknowledging that the shipment was received in apparent good condition unless otherwise noted. You did not note any damage to this item at the time of delivery. There is no evidence that the damage that is now being claimed is a result of our handling or that this item changed condition while under our care, custody, and control. Therefore, we must respectfully deny liability." Unfortunately, they continue holding their line on this excuse. And their contracts are written so vaguely that any wrongdoing will always be pointed back at the consumer while protecting their corporation. read more

Really terrible moving company. I selected them because my agent suggested them and said it was a family owned company, despite their being more expensive than others. They made several serious mistakes. Most could not possibly be corrected by filing a claim. Not only did they not take responsibility for their mistakes, they charged ME for one of their mistakes and went so far as to threaten collection action for that mistake of theirs. I wrote them a detailed letter explaining and asked them to think about what they should do to make it right... and ,crickets... no response at all. They showed by their actions that they don't care about their customers, only about getting paid, regardless of the reason. I've moved many times with many different movers. While all have had at least some problems, none were as bad as Stevens. Be careful. It's best to go elsewhere for your moving needs. read more

So years later, this company still makes me sick inside. We hired a reputable moving company out of Chicago. Contract stated no additional charges because we were mindful to stay under quoted price to move. Well . . Let me tell you . Day of move they arrive and start loading up stuff we were going to give away, air compressor, power washer, etc. they said you hardly have anything you have lots of room to fill. So we loaded up some extra stuff. THEN a month after goods were delivered, we get charged a 25% fee of $1000.00 for being over weight. States all 4 family's who's belongings were shipped in that truck each had to pay. We should have fought it, but my husband didn't realize it was a separate bill from the van line that the moving company's USEd that TRIp. What a scam. Then the moving company owner acted dumb when I told him what happened after he was upset I left a bad Yelp review on his end. Oh, and the guys who we paid extra to put beds together, yeah put all the headboard bolts in backwards and the raw end of the bolts dug huge gauges in the new drywall. Rum dums. Beware read more

If I could give this company a 0 I would. They have failed us in moving. This is a military contract and we have had nothing but unprofessional service with them. They subcontracted three incompetent boys to move our household into a truck. They stole my husbands knife after I had set it down on counter, broke my sons desk drawer in front of me and said it was already broken, went into my fridge and drank my husbands beer and hid in McDonald's cup. Then they left the elderly driver at 5 because of an emergency (I overheard him tell his coworker he only had a sitter until 7 earlier that morning) with 1/3 of our goods in our driveway. I have done everything I was supposed to do but mine and my families precious time has been wasted. I cannot even begin to describe how angry and dissatisfied I am. DO NOT USE THEM!! Our local, Kansas City area affiliate was super accommodating and friendly. The first red flag should have been that the representative did not return our phone calls as the move date approached and we had already signed a contract. On move day: Showed up late. The movers were impatient, very hurried and brusk. Reason for most of the damage; almost none of the pieces were blanket wrapped or otherwise covered. They carried everything down a flight of stairs (unprotected) and placed items out on the driveway before loading in the truck. Our neighbor told us that the movers dropped outdoor furniture off the roof-top deck, we guess so they wouldn't have to carry it down the stairs! We were given an arrival date in California. No show. When called, the dispatcher was extremely rude and stated that: "I don't know if the truck broke down or the driver had a break down." (You can't make this up!) The unloading was a bit better in that the California movers were more professional and careful. But, rushed and the head driver wanted us to sign all the paperwork very quickly, before the furniture was even in the house. (Beware, do not sign anything until you have examined every piece of furniture and box even if the mover demands it.) We had purchased extra insurance through Stevens, (at a very high rate.) Our claims for damage were met with: - Delay, delay, delay. - They claimed that our furniture had been previously damaged which is not true. - Stated on several pieces that damages were minimal and would not affect the use. (Broken chair or sofa back, missing legs and deep gouges are not minimal!) - For pieces that they would acknowledge had been damaged by their negligence, extremely low reimbursement was offered. When they did answer the phone, they lied, when the weren't making things up, they were telling us they didnt know anything about their subcontracts. They packing was awful. The poor drivers didnt know what was going on. The unpacking team that we contracted for and confirmed numerous times with multiple individuals never showed up. Tried to force us to pay thousands of dollars extra until we told them the police were on the way. Unprofessional. Dishonest. They never completed their contracted work. read more

Stevens was subcontracted by our initial moving and storage company, Mountain Moving and Storage in Lakewood, WA. We were not told they would be delivering our belongings to our new home in Missoula, MT. They hired three local people to unload, including one recovering from strokes who had trouble transposing numbers from boxes. The driver (who had a breakdown the day before and had a load bound to Tucson) slept for the greater part of the unload, so there was not good supervision for boxes without numbers, etc. We bought the extra insurance and he assured us anything missing or damaged would be taken care of by Stevens or Mountain Moving. When I had some questions about a couple of things (couldn't find) he told us they would be packed inside one of the 240+ boxes that arrived. As it turns out, they were but we have other missing items (12 place settings plus serve ware, gardening tools, fry pan) that obviously were removed from boxes or packaging. I actually talked to the packer and watched him pack our flatware and talked to him the next day about the flatware trays that were left in the drawer that I had wanted packed, too. Stevens and Mountain Moving are both claiming that since all the boxes arrived we have no claim to missing items. We know things were mishandled because we had some small items handed to us with no box or numbers and no listing on the inventory sheet, being told, "These were last minute items and were not in a box." We also have a missing grass catcher for a lawn mower that we did not spot in time and we know it is futile to expect compensation for it, since we did not mention it on their "legal" paperwork. This driver reported to Stevens that a bed was fully assembled with no damages when he had to come tell us screws for the support slats were missing and one slat had a support leg with a missing foot. He said that slat would be put at the end of the bed with less weight being on it and suggested we should put a piece of wood under it. Stevens eventually paid $25 for the hardware, but our distrust only grew after this. If he isn't truthful about $25 worth of compensation, what more is he untruthful about? Stevens paid for some damage to wooden furniture, but won't pay for missing items. They were (initially) ready to pay us $.60 per pound until our claim was submitted with the replacement/repair insurance in place. We don't know which company took our belongings, and they are covering for each other so we can only say, "Do not use either Stevens or Mountain Moving and Storage."
