Penny and Pig Estate Sales

(73 reviews)

Clearing out your family home of 40+ years is a daunting task not for the faint of heart, and…read moreyou're better off with an expert by your side. That expert would be Penny Katz and her team at Penny & Pig. They have many years of experience doing estate sales. Penny is resourceful, has an eye for appraisals, and has the qualifications and large network to make your sale and clear-out a success. She can give you the right options for on-premise, online and auction-house sales. She will help with final clear-out and donation of items that don't sell and will provide a receipt for taxes. She'll communicate with you throughout the entire process, and if she says she'll do something, she's good for her word. She is honest and trustworthy. She is respectful of your stuff and careful to not damage your floors when moving furniture. Plus she is a genuinely nice person with an upbeat, can-do personality, and she clearly loves her work. Some lessons learned along the way: 1) If you plan to engage the services of an estate liquidator, do it sooner than later. I made the mistake of clearing out "too much" only to have most companies tell me it wasn't worth their time and effort. Apparently, this is an all too common mistake. It's better to hire a professional to help you sort through and valuate items for sale at the very beginning before you start donating or throwing things out. Don't wait until your house is in escrow and you're in a time crunch. 2) You won't get much for furniture--even antiques--no matter how good of a condition they're in, unless they are in demand (i.e., mid-century modern). Sad but true: the price is whatever the market will bear. Have realistic expectations, and you're better off donating furniture to family and friends. 3) If you have a piano, it's extremely hard to find an interested buyer or even a charity who will take it off your hands, as the market is currently glutted with used pianos. If you're just starting the clear-out process, the piano should be your number one priority because it'll be the most difficult item to get rid of. 4) The price you paid for an item doesn't necessarily determine its value in the current marketplace--for example, expensive luggage, cameras, and electronics will sell at a fraction of their original value. 5) What will get you the most money are jewelry and collectibles. DO get an appraisal for these ahead of time. 6) Don't get rid of books, clothing, dishes, tools, toys and other knick knacks ahead of your sale. These lower-value "filler" items are what will draw buyers to your sale and will bring in more cash for you. 7) Finally...hire the best. HIRE PENNY & PIG!! They do a fantastic job and I would not hesitate to hire them again.

Penny has been absolutely great! After consulting with…read moreseveral estate sales agents, I learned that the standard charge is 40% and it takes up to four weeks to put on a professional estate sale. So no. I didn't get to use her expertise as our estate sales agent, but she gave us some great valuable information on putting on our own estate sales. I used the estate sales links she suggested and they brought in people from great distances. Our signage brought a great crowd too. BUT!!! I highly recommend --- DON'T DO IT YOURSELF!!!! I was pressed to remove the contents of my mother's home much sooner than a professional sales would complete a sale. Yet, I will never let this time pressure control the issue again! Penny's expertise expands all levels! She advertises. Completes signage. Provides adequate pricing. And knows about crowd management, which we came short handed at one point. She's knowledgable in antiques, vintage, jewelry, and coin. Through this personal experience, trying to dispose of my mother's estate, I confirmed Penny's estimates (which seemed low) on what to sell my mother's very high quality items, and yet I still didn't get that value. So, don't be disappointed that your loved ones antiques and such don't sell at your high expectations. People just aren't buying it!!! Penny also passed my impression as a good honest person. Who else would help out in so many ways? Hiring an estate sales person is worth the cost all the way!! So why not hire someone like Penny and Pig Estate Sales? HIRE PENNY!!!

Mission complete, we realized we had absolutely no idea what any of it was worth, zero, zip, nada which put us back to square one and that was impeding our remodel plans. Bottom line our stuff, minus the pieces we knew would blend well with the modern look we wanted to achieve, had to go before we could start. We were to say the least overwhelmed! Same savvy friend suggested we contact personal property appraiser, antiques appraiser William M. Novotny ISA AM https://www.novotnyappraisal.com/ who had recently assisted a friend of hers preparing an estate sale. We made an appointment with Mr. Novotny. His consultation fee was $200 and because we were out of his business radius, a travel fee of $100 was added. Money well spent though as he honestly, professionally advised us that what we had was basically "brown furniture", not of much value with a few noteworthy pieces (the ones we intended to keep). So, my always thinking, sweetie, asked how might we get rid of all our stuff? Mr. Novotny referred us to Abell Auction Company http://abell.com/ http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/classichollywood/la-ca-mn-classic-hollywood-20160221-story.html (review to follow). As Mr. Novotny's website proclaims, "When value is in doubt - find out!" We're SO glad we did.

The first time we didn't bring my jade and other items, just chat with Mr. David and found out that he is a very knowledgeable and experienced master with Jade, diamond and other gemstones with so many years hands on experiences. So I made my decision to bring my jade, diamond and ruby to him the next visit. Mr. David is very professional and knowledgeable. He explains every item's details from the look to the test results from his professional examination equipment. Also showed us the similar item both in fake and real in his own collections to teach us the difference between the fake one and nature stone. For my real diamond, he counted the whole one and melees very carefully and gave the most precise appraise price, and also the current retail price. He also gave me the advice on not to change the diamond ring's base and the reason behind this, and help us to clean the item with the professional tool. Mr. David is a very fun person to chat as well, it's really fascinating to hear some of the stories from the master who has been trough a lot. We are glad to find the Pro like Mr. David in this field in LA area with all the strong knowledge and vivd personality. We will definitely visit Mr. David's laboratory again to lean more and enjoy this atmosphere surrounded by these beautiful stones and interesting history.

He also has a bunch of cool jewelry in his display case I want to check out next time. Make sure to pay in cash, though he is open to use Zelle.
