Wow, these guys are real life super heroes! We bought a house, and the former owner left EVERYTHING behind. In just two days, the Hughes team sorted through the good, the bad, and the ugly. My Mother passed and had lots of Waterford Crystal, Sterling, (2) mink coats, Asian tables, various collector dishes, boom box, vases. I contacted Todd, he came out and gave me a price and we signed a contract on Aug. 10th. The guys came to pick up the items on Aug 14, 2018 and I was expecting a check in 72 hrs later, as their contract and advertisements clearly state. After about 1 wk, I called Liz and talked with both she and Sophia. Both said, "the check was in the mail." On Aug 21 I received a check with a notice saying, "insufficient funds". I called and reported this to Sophia, Todd & Liz. They seemed to be surprised & Todd never returned my call. I asked them to send me a Cashiers Check in the original amount Plus the returned check funds, and still to date, Oct 2, 2018, I have NOT received a call from them or a check. They have had my Mothers items since Aug14, 2018 and I still have not received payment for them; even after several calls. These guys cannot be trusted. It's horrible to take advantage of people in such a distressing time! read more

There are good sides and bad sides of any business. I've shopped the Hughes Estate Sales for years and like the mailings and detailed photos. The in-person experience can be less than desired. I like the price reductions as days past, but find the initial prices to be out of line for the quality of the merchandise. Also a lot of it seems like surplus stuff that just doesn't sell. My very recent highly negative experience happened with the February Altadena sale, which had in the inventory a 1982 Mercedes 300D sedan. I went to inquire about the car no less than 3 times (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) and each time was unable to obtain ANY information about the car and the asking price. One time I was there I was able to view the car (locked, outside only) but again, even at the sale no one could tell me the price of the car. Each of the three times I was there I left my number and asked to have my call returned -- I never got a call back. Three different requests left with 3 different people, including leaving a business card each time, etc. Something is very wrong with the car consignment process if customers can't get a call back on a car being sold by Hughes. I also have friends who were in the market for this particular car - they saw the car at a time when "Sam" was available and remarked that his behavior towards them was dismissive at best. WTF??? If you are having an estate sale and want to sell a car, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES have the car portion handled by Hughes. As it stands now I see the car on their website (if you can manage to find the cars in inventory, which is not easy to find) priced at over twice the market value for the car in that condition. I have been to two of their Altadena sales and I like their unique set up. They have a warehouse location where the items are well organized and displayed. Much easier than going through someone's actual home. I also imagine this is less invasive for their clients. I do find their prices a bit on the high side. They do mark them down as their sales progress but if you show up the first day expect to pay close to retail. I also found the stickers they use are hard to remove and have actually damaged an item I bought. The check out staff is very nice and I like that they provide nice quality boxes for you and are very organized overall. read more

Update December 2019: Based on the terrific results we got in selling our 1929 Hudson through Hughes, we also asked them to find a good deal for us on the sale of a 20007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Even though the vehicle had been modified with an expensive after-market front bumper, as well as an advanced stereo system, backup camera and blind-spot warning system, we were offered less than bluebook prices from CarMax and from a Toyota dealer ($9500 and $8700, respectively.) Sam Alam, the vehicle specialist at Hughes, did his magic act again, and came up with a seller who paid over $16,000 for the vehicle. This guy is great! Not only did Sam deliver a great sales outcome to us, he also personally delivered the vehicle to the new owner in Marin County, north of San Francisco. Hughes has handled the estates of some of the most interesting properties I've seen in the Pasadena area. They tend to have the higher quality estates with much better, if more expensive, items. I have found wonderful furniture and accessories for my home at a fraction of the price of a retail or antique store. Plus, going to estate sales is fun! You see beautiful neighborhoods and homes you would otherwise never get a chance to visit. Also, the Hughes staff is friendly and very professional. Definitely worth checking out. read more

My first visit to a Hughes Estate sale was years ago at a home in Arcadia where, in the final hours of the sale, I picked up the last of some potted plants at a great price. My second was at the lovely home of a landscape architect many years ago. I'm pleased to report that all but one plant from both those sales are surviving today. Over the years I've scored some really lovely collectibles. Even if you're not in the market for something in particular, there will always be at least one really intriguing curiosity worth investigating. Be fast, though. I love the showroom sales, but for some unknown reason, the friends I bring with me always end up buying way more than I do. The showroom is spacious and the merchandise presented well. There is room to step back from a piece of art or furniture and really get a good look. Some items are extra-expensive, but that may say more about my budget than their pricing policy. The staff members are friendly and they will load bulky items into your car. if you go to the showroom, enter with an open mind. You may think you want one thing, but you might end up finding something completely different. read more

Hughes Estate Sales are not only Aladdins caves of the finest treasure, be it furniture, vintage clothing, Meissen china or primitive artefacts, but the staff are all highly professional, knowledgeable and enormous fun. Warehouse sale days always feel like the best party going in town. My home has been made all the more beautiful for all the extraordinary finds I have had at HES. If anyone were to ask for recommendations in the event of having to divest themselves of their estate, I could not recommend Todd and co. highly enough. I'm fascinated with the concept of Hughes Estate Sales. It's like going to a huge garage sale - except with incredible furniture and accessories for ones home. There's always wonderful treasures in their convenient huge warehouse. My entire home is decorated from all the priceless collections I've picked out throughout the years. Everyone, who comes into my home is always impressed at my decorations and everything they point to I purchased at a great price at Hughes. In short, while I don't have an empty corner in my house to decorate, I'm addicted to going to their 3-day sale once a month. Hughes had a painting that could have been a doppelgänger for a family photo of my grandmother as a school teacher with her students in a one room school house in West Virginia 1918. I wanted, lusted for this painting. Except, I was due for a surgical procedure the morning the sale started. Oops. I emailed the staff with my backstory and predicament. Either I was incredibly lucky or the buying gods were on my side, I bought the painting later that day, over the phone and arranged pick up the next day. I called Hughes Estate Sales because I am moving and plan to consign most of my furniture. My first impression wasn't favorable because the woman I spoke with asked me to email her pictures of the items which I did within 15 minutes of our call. She emailed me that she would plan to call me later that day after she reviewed the items. I never received the promised call. Two days later, I followed up and spoke with someone else who after seeing the email exchange, she would have Todd come to my home. We scheduled the visit. Todd was professional and on time. After looking at all the items, he said that they would do an estate sale on property. I told him I wasn't comfortable with that and asked what the other options were. He said none. I thought that was odd and after he left I went back to their site and reread the following: Our Showroom consignment service is proven to bring you more revenue. Whether you are liquidating an entire estate, moving, downsizing or have property in storage, our selection and value estimation process ensures that each item is closely inspected and evaluated. Whether contemporary or antique, your items receive thorough inspection by our appraiser and are beautifully merchandised in our Showroom. The sales themselves are great. Before the sales start, an email is sent out if you're on their email list. Hughes posts beautiful photo galleries so you can see what's being offered. They hold regular sales in their Pasadena warehouse as well as downtown LA. The merchandise is varied and good quality and onsite staff friendly. The sale hours aren't very convenient though. Customer service as far as getting any questions answered sucks. They don't respond to email or return phone calls. read more

I was told by Hughes' management that "physical presence" is their rule for waiting in line. Basically, you have to be "physically present" when you wait in line. There will be no list. You can't even put a box there to hold your place. You are allowed a 15 minutes bathroom break but you must tell the persons in front and behind you to hold your place. If you see boxes holding someone's place, you can remove the boxes after 15 minutes. What Hughes didn't tell you is that this rule does not apply to rich bullies because they value money above anything else. So, don't bother to go there early. A rich bully can ask his friend put a box to hold his place in the queue while you stand in line for 4 hours. I was at Hughes' Alameda showroom last weekend. I stood in line for 4 hours. There were 4 people who put boxes to hold their places at the front of the queue. When I complained to the staff about them, the staff still allowed them to stay because they are rich and big spenders. Five minutes after the showroom opened, two of them cornered and attacked me because I complained. You would expect the management to do something. No. They asked you to "settle this" outside. Go to Hughes at your own risk. Hughes protects violent and aggressive bullies. They value money above anything else including your safety. If you get pushed and shoved by the bullies, the management will simply say "I didn't see it" and "you need to settle this"! read more

I bought a Panasonic Professional HD 1080p TH-65PF9UK 65" Plasma TV monitor from Hughes after finding it on their eBay auction. After I picked it up and took it home to test, I found there was a discrepancy with the TV not having speakers. After a phone call with Todd, the owner, he made me feel like a valued customer and gave me a small refund. I can't speak highly enough of service like this. I have been working with Sam Alam in their Vehicle Sales. My father had four classic cars, and one of them was more unique so I chose to go with Hughes since they promised me they knew how to handle an item such as this. Mr Alam promised to communicate with me throughout the process and get a much higher sales price than the people I was working with on the other three vehicles. Hughes came recommended to me / my probate lawyers, so we thought we would give them a try. I was supposed to be briefed and they were supposed to seek my approval before they did any work "to fix up" the vehicle. I still have no proof of any work that they said they did after the fact - they certainly didn't get any work pre-approved. The car was in working order when they picked it up, so again, I don't know what work they did, but they sent a list to my lawyers. They took 3 months to finally post it, and then did so at a price more than double what we had talked about as the target for the vehicle. He did not discuss strategy with me prior, even though he had said he would. When the car, of course, didn't sell, he reinstated a new auction on eBay for half of what he originally posted it at. I have no details of what happened during the auction. 3 bidders either removed their bids or were removed by Mr Alam, since he indicated on the auction that he would remove any bidders that didn't contact him first (that's already sketchy to me, since eBay has some pretty strict rules). Then, the winning bidder (at the opening price), I was notified that it "fell through". Again, thought eBay had some pretty strict rules. It certainly made me wonder if it was a fake bid just to garner interest in the vehicle and get the bidding started (I have no proof of that, but I also have no proof of any of these potential buyers I've heard about with absolutely no details). Now that is has been posted twice at drastically different prices, I feel like the market is now poisoned against this vehicle. If I take the car back (and pay Hughes for the privilege of doing so) and post again on my own - knowledgeable car buyers will certainly wonder what is wrong with the vehicle. All because of a greedy seller who was not representing my interests appropriately. This experience has been miserable for me, and doesn't represent the way my family or I do business (honorably and with extensive communication). I am very unhappy with Hughes services, or really, the lack thereof. read more

This review is for my experience of dealing with Todd (the owner) for my buy-out experience. My vintage warehouse needed to be cleared out by the end of the month, he came in for a estimate and we signed a contract, I didn't mind the low offer on paper ($800) he gave me, which he estimated $1500 when he told me on words. The morning he was suppose to come in, he was 1 and half hour late due to his excuse of emergency. He said they needed 4 hours to move everything, which he said 30 mins when he was doing the estimate. Once he got into my warehouse, he walked around and told me he had to cancel my deal because he thought I removed something which he estimated in the deal. The warehouse was full of big pieces of furnitures, there was no way for me to move any piece without hiring a mover. I told him I did not remove anything and asked him to get the estimated list and tell me what it is. He said he can't tell, but something was missing. I was super offended, but I did have to move out in 4 days. So I told him to give me a lower offer if he wanted, or just take everything for free without giving me anything. Then he told me that they are not a donation center! All of my display cabinets, wood cabinets and dinning sets with 8 velvet chairs costed me $200-800 each when I got them, and there are about 20 pieces in total. At that point, I was feeling, I rather threw them away than giving them to you, Todd. I really don't think this is a right way to stay in a or any business. NOTHING was removed from the warehouse like Todd said in his reply. I can be sure now his is a very dishonest person. read more

Excellent service. We had my parents 4 bedroom house FULL of collectables and other less interesting things. They charged a % of the sale. They sorted and displayed it all. It took a week to sort through the things. Some items were put on eBay for a wider audience. The unsold items were donated to charity and we were given a receipt for taxes. I went to my first ever Hughes Estate Sale this past weekend at a gorgeous home in Los Feliz. This is by far the classiest of the estate sale companies in town. The people are very friendly and helpful, and I was totally impressed to see box tops available so that you can carry around items you want to buy, or that you are thinking of buying. Also, after paying, there is a table with newsprint to wrap your breakables, and bags to carry your things away. I have never seen this before, and I have been going to estate sales for many years. I also like how they send emails noting the discounts for each subsequent days of the sales. I went to Los Feliz both Saturday and Sunday, and got some great things. Sunday, also, I was able to negotiate a nice price since I was there at the bitter end. Highly recommend! read more

When my Father passed Last summer , I was faced with the dreaded What to do with all his "Stuff "? . My Dads Estate was Just One Great Big Overwhelm! Antiques! Art!! Collectibles! I have bought and Sold Antiques in California since the 80s, so i am familiar with the back side of many of these Businesses . Many so called "Estate Liquidators " come through, grab the Tiffany/ Gold/ and Obvious high end items , leaving the majority of things behind. Then of course there are the" Yard Sale" / Estate liquidaters who pull everything out , pile it up on tables around the house., then sit with their tin Money boxes out front in the driveway , Meanwhile people meander around your home unattended. I love shopping these sales but would not want these types handling my estate!! At the end of the day the homes looked trashed Ugg. and Really, who wants an ambiguous inventory list of your heirlooms ( dish, book, ring ) . Not Me! I wanted some accountability. HUGHES has an Pro System! They are Honest and were accountable for every item in my Dads Estate . I have Attended many of their sales as a buyer . FUN! As sellers they are Professional and Knowledgable . Todd Hughs Has An Amazing eye, and A "rolodex in his head " of People looking for particular items . Hughes " Does Everything " from beginning to end. They Picked up my Dads entire Estate and moved it to their ware house. All the Items were Inventoried , Photographed , Artistically displayed , then sold online or at their ware house sale. I even attended the sale.!! They have some really neat collectible items here. Especially the vehicles, last time I was here, they had a 67 Camaro that was in pristine condition. They really present the cars very well with detailed history and work that was performed on the cars. Sam was the guy that helped me as I checked out the cars.
