    The Dancing Room

    The Dancing Room

Everyone likes dancing. Actually that isn't true, many people are far too uptight to like dancing…read more But anyway, everyone who is truly human likes dancing. Unfortunately though, unless you're a trained professional, in a line-dancing club, or really, really drunk at Red Square, dancing isn't something you just do, whenever you want. Dancing Room is your chance to dance - sober, untrained and unfettered. Every Tuesday at 6pm, for a gold coin donation, a big group of people meet at the Reading Room and dancing their little hearts out. Silly dancing, serious dancing, only dancing. Endorphins flying everywhere. Dignified adults, having a good time, without the aid of drugs nor alcohol. It's heart-warming. And leg-warming if you're doing it Footloose style. There is a different DJ each week, and there is no stylistic preference. Hip-hop, Spanish music, 90s pop - it depends who is DJ'ing that week. It isn't that hard to get your turn DJ'ing either - just come along and have a chat to one of the organisers. There is also a special location occasionally - this week for example it is happening on the little island at Rymill Park (affectionately known in some circles as 'Goon Island'). I would recommend keeping an eye on their Facebook page for updates: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dancing-Room/261295520577239?sk=wall. GOOD VIBES ONLY!

I'm far too uptight to like dancing…read more I like to entertain my own personal facade and delusion that I'm a pretty cool guy. I thrust this delusion onto other as often as I can. And I like to think I can keep it up, for the most park. There is one activity I cannot, however, and that's dancing. I'm completely ignorant and untalented. I can tap my foot and shake my head to a beat REALLY well, but I've no idea what to do past that. So when my friends dragged me along to the 'Dancing Room' assuring me I 'wouldn't have to dance', that I could just 'sit and watch'. This was a stark lie. I was given no quarter! But because everyone's really laid back here, I didn't feel AS awkward as I normally might, and I had a great chance to study other dancers and try my best to learn just what the friggen hell I was supposed to be doing.

I'd heard about them over the years, but finally shimmied on over to their Hindmarsh studio (in the Serbian Hall) when I got a bargain 10 visit pass from one of those online coupon sites. La Bomba runs an array of Latino Dance classes, including salsa, reggaeton, rueda, zumba and my class; samba. I'll start with the niggly negatives. The hall is RIGHT NEXT TO the Entertainment Centre and not far from Hindmarsh Stadium, which means 8 times out of 10 parking is a biatch! On top of that, parking inspectors love the area on events nights so watch out. I also found it quite off-putting that during classes the woman that checks people in (I think she may be the owner) sits at the back talking and laughing with a bunch of randoms. I think these randoms are advanced dancers that come to freestyle once all us beginner chumps are out of the way, and I can see that it indicates that they have a fab fancy footed community, but for someone who is self conscious and is really proud of herself for walking through the door and giving her booty a shake, having a bunch of experts laughing at the back of the room is not only off putting, but just comes across as really unprofessional. All that being said, my main instructor was LOVELY. She just wanted us to have fun, be confident, enjoy the class and strut like Beyonce. I loved her energy and her instructing style. We did have another instructor a couple of times, and whilst he definitely knew what he was on about, he was much less fun and much stricter... which didn't suit me but I know others would love. Overall, La Bomba is definitely worth a visit if you can get your hands on a magical coupon site pass or you're really into latin dance, but for me I probably wouldn't pay full price. Instead I'm on the search for another spot to give my hips a wiggle. ;)

Upon arrival, you are welcomed by a beautiful team of experienced dance teachers, Oscar, Getty and Manuela. They love dancing, have the patience and passion to teach you, all with a genuine smile on the faces. There are plenty of classes to enrol in, from salsa, modern bachata, bachata sensual, dominican batchata and workshops with social dance events throughout the year. Most importantly, the staff remembers your name and wants to genuinely get to know you as a person, and your dance goals. From a business prospective, its so important to know your customers to retain the loyalty, understand what they want and keep them coming back. This studio is definitely heading in the right direction! There are special deals online through their website and Facebook page, it's usually $18per class but if your a dance Cray Cray like me, you might want to try the new students one time offer for $39 PER WEEK x 4 | 4 Weeks Unlimited Classes $156 or $25 per day x 5 days for $125. Once you pay online there are instructions to download their app to enrol into their classes and also to continue any future payments with different packages such as ongoing memberships or casual passes. Now we know how it works, would you like more details right? The juicy bits, the way it makes you feel when you learn new moves, how are the vibes of the community? Will my skills improve? Firstly, anyone that joins is a follower and when they progress becomes a leader, which is pretty epic so you can learn both lead and following as a dancer. The workshops and social dance parties are spicy as, lots of flavour, positive attitude on the dance floor, by creating your signature moves, your own recipe, your own unique style so you can own it on the dance floor The studio has it set up to have 3 classes in a row of the same style while building layers to tie into each other, so a student can progress through each class by learning musicality, body isolation, styling, footwork, body and head rolls. Having 45min dance class isn't enough, but having 3 in a row and a bit of social dancing afterwards,it's like having a meal at a restaurant. *Entree: a plate of mouth-watering dance warm ups then inviting your body for techniques and movements and some combos. Once the music starts buzzing in your ears, you want your main next. *Main: Served as spicy as you can get, repeat of body warm ups and isolations, tantalising new footwork, styling and combinations, leaving a burning taste on your dance toes. *Dessert: Infused with the last 2 classes, dessert is served of rich and smooth footwork and more unique combinations, bringing out a a sweet sensational signature move you thought you never had. *Coffee: Thought you were full with dessert? No no no, they offer some social dancing to practice some freestyling, your body and feet will eventually leave the studio on a high. Dance Amor has a dance community for you, they will support and welcome you to feel more confident on the dance floor at social events as well as most importantly, the community is warm and friendly by keeping in touch through their apps of communication. Are you feeling the vibes yet?

This is really a hub for creativity, whether it is for artists, businesses or events. No matter your venture, you will be welcomed here and looked after. The crew at Tenth & Gibson went out of their way to help me out with my event. No matter my enquiry, they found a way to assist and support what I needed. What I do love about this space is that it is well priced, open, well sized, funky, colourful and you can pretty much work the space you want it. There is nothing to navigate around; and there is great acoustics and lighting. There is some pretty cool street art on the walls and the decor is really funky and eclectic. So, you don't really need to do much to dress up the room. It already looks really great. The other bonus is it is just outside of the CBD and there is free street parking! Your guests will love that! If you need it, you can make great use out of the photography backdrop. You can project onto it or use it for your own photography for your event. It was a brilliant backdrop to my photos of guests. If you do have a catered event, there is a space to the side of the main Venue room you can use with easy street access. Speak to the staff about using this. I was absolutely delighted to have used Tenth & Gibson for an event. It is by far one of my favourite venues in Adelaide and I recommend it to anyone looking for a space for large or small events.
