The best of the worst rehab places. There really isn't any physical or occupational therapy. Don't ever get me wrong they have a beautiful little rehab area with glass walls, that when you enter the facility you think right away that you have a chance to get stronger and therapy that you desperately need. It's all lies. They put you on a bike for 10 minutes the most, and nothing else. I needed to practice the steps so I can navigate them at home, that was never an option. They dismiss your concerns, and most of the staff has such an attitude. They look through you as if you don't exist, their whole job is to help you get healthier and stronger. The food is disgusting, as well as the Cockroaches not only in the room but in the shower area. It looks clean for the most part. There was a charge nurse that was very kind, that lived in Brooklyn for a while and really helped me out. Also there was Solana who was the only one that really cared about me. My aunt stayed here for a short time. The facility is very nice. The social worker Ardrina was so sweet, and kind. She answered all my question. she made sure my aunt had adequate care at home when she was released. The nursing staff was very supportive as well. I will highly recommend. Debra Barner read more

They do not even deserve one star. My husband was admitted to Hillhaven on the 14th of July, 2024. One month later, he went into inpatient hospice, largely due to a head injury sustained at Hillhaven, that stopped his cancer treatment and rendered him incapable of giving informed consent. Nobody on the staff informed me of his accident, the details of which are still unclear, and changed a couple of times. My husband called me twice; the second time, while I was getting dressed and ready to go to the home after realizing something was VERY wrong. It was only then that I spoke to a staff member who took the phone from my husband and informed me that he had a fall. When were they going to let me know???? When I got there, I was not allowed to talk to the doctor, who was not on the premises, and they refused to call 911 so that he could receive treatment for his concussion. He was in an altered state, was bandaged on his arm, and had a huge lump on his forehead. In the meantime, remarks were made by the staff about the difficulty of dealing with Alzheimer's patients. My husband DID NOT HAVE ALZHEIMER'S disease. TWO HOURS LATER, they agreed to call 911, and my husband was transported to the hospital of our choice. By this time, I had packed his belongings and was ready to take him to the hospital myself. He spent several days in ICU, then was on the critical care ward. His immunology treatments were suspended due to the nature of his head injury. He probably would have died due to the aggressive nature of his cancer, but he spent the last five weeks of his life incapable of communicating effectively due to the concussion. He passed away in inpatient hospice August 22. I am more than convinced that this accident hastened his demise, and left him incapable of being able to communicate with friends and family in the final weeks of his life. Update my daughter was found unresponsive on September 27, 2024. As a result she is now on a ventilator. I was there the day before and she was not sick or or showed any signs of sickness. There has been no response from the administration other than saying that an investigation was be conducted. No one reached out to me to ask about her condition. My 89 year old sister had rehab there. The rehab staff was excellent and encouraging. The food seemed tasty. Those were the pleasant experiences. My sister was not changed in a timely manner and in fact 2 depends were put on her at a time and my only reasoning was that they were not changing her any time soon. One day my sister, who has dementia was left in her wheel chair in a dining room by herself for over 3 hours !!! No one came to check for her. Her roommate, who was 101 with a good mind, shared with me she had not seen my sister since the morning. Certain days some staff seemed to be like kids at school when the teacher leaves the classroom, not doing their job !!! Don't have your loved one ring the bell for help/assistance, because it's never answered!!1 read more

Run, do not walk, away from considering this facility for your loved one. Sterling Care Hillhaven in Adelphi is understaffed, the staff is not responsive to patients' needs, often has non-working call buttons for patients to use when they require assistance. read more

My rating would be negative stars if that was an option. If you're considering this facility don't. If your loved one is here, find them a new place. Seriously. My elderly father was there as a rehab patient following surgery from a broken hip. We had problems from the beginning. Reaching anyone at the main number is hit or miss outside of M-F / 9-5. Emails to the director went unanswered after the initial welcome email. Communication in general with nursing/care staff is horrible. They're rude, both in person and on the phone. They lack compassion, professionalism and the basic gentle manner any health care provider should have. There's no communication with patient or family reference PT/OT schedules. They left my father sitting in a wheelchair in his room for hours, waiting for therapy. This happened many times. They were unaware of a scheduled follow up appt. with the surgeon, despite it being on his hospital discharge papers, AND a normal and expected event following surgery of this kind! Not at all convinced they can handle medical care. We could never reach them, but they would often call us to say he needEd to be seen by a doctor reference chronic conditions that are clearly referenced in his chart. We had to remind them constantly to refer to that chart and follow medical orders clearly outlined in said chart reference the chronic conditions....Seriously? One day while there visiting, there were questions refence his medical condition. We had been given 2 different accounts. I asked to speak directly to the doctor. They said to wait here, and the doctor will be in shortly. I waited over an hour before someone told me the doctor had left and to wait at home for a phone call........ I had to call back for that phone call. In the 2 weeks he was there we had problems daily. I can not emphasize enough how awful our experience has been. We moved our father to another facility. Even the final transport had problems. Please. Do not take your loved ones here. Just writing this review is making my blood boil. I am so glad we made to decision to move him. read more

Unfortunately we need to add to the bad reviews of Hill Haven. My father entered Hill Haven's subacute rehab program after doing very well in hospital based acute rehab. After 5 weeks, during which we were unable to see him due to Covid (understandable) and during which we had very little communication (not acceptable), he came out much weaker and disoriented. He was only home for 4 hours before going into the emergency room with a urinary tract infection that likely contributed to his weakness and disorientation. We have no idea how long he had the infection and how much it contributed to his dismal state. The worse part of Hill Haven was the lack of information regarding his care and goals. We asked to observe remotely or for a videotape of his OT/PT to no avail. If we had, we may have recognized that something was going on affecting his performance. They wanted us to request any written information through medical records and pay for it even though my mother and I have both medical power of attorney and legal power of attorney. From a family and social interaction point of view, they were only able to facilitate one video call in five weeks. I tried to reach the director, Maurice McIntyre, multiple times. He returned only one of my calls and I was never able to connect with him. I can not in good conscience recommend Hill Haven and I certainly would not use it for any family of mine. read more

My husband was transferred from hospital to Hillhaven Assisted Living (now rebranded as Sterling Care Hillhaven) for rehab on August 9, 2023. I visited the facility just before he entered and had an extremely pleasant conversation with the receptionist which, in part, led me to choose that facility for him. The very day he was admitted, I had an unpleasant encounter with one of the nurses at Hillhaven. Her manner bordered on hostile and I got the impression that one would have an easier time extracting teeth rather than information from her. I then saw the Nurse Manager, drew her attention to the off-putting manner of the nurse in question and asked a number of general questions related to my husband's care as well as the goals set for patients when they are admitted to the facility. Regarding the goals, she said they were (a) to prevent falls, (b) to prevent skin breakdown, (c) to ensure that patients had a good appetite, and (d) to monitor depression. While the Nurse Manager seemed receptive to my concerns, not a single one of the goals stated was met. (a) My husband fell off his bed one night and an attempt was made to cover it up by staff; (b) He developed terrible bedsores while he was there, which have proven very difficult to heal (he entered the facility with his skin in very good condition); (c) He was sometimes not given the assistance he needed with eating, so I tried to get there at mealtimes to feed him myself; and (d) He was given the silent treatment by some of the nurses. I visited him every day and NOT ONCE did someone come to his room when he or I pressed the call bell. The overall attitude I encountered left me to wonder whether, in addition to the poor care received by patients at this facility, my husband was facing retaliation because I had spoken up on his behalf. Owing to the very substandard care my husband was receiving at Hillhaven, I ended up removing him from that facility before his planned discharge date. I was careful to document, day by day, the events that took place while he was at Hillhaven and to keep photos of him lying for hours in his own filth and of the bedsores he developed at this facility. Please, if you care for your loved one, steer clear of HELLHAVEN!! read more

I would like to take this opportunity to recommend Hillhaven to anyone who is interested in an assisted living facility/nursing home for a family member or loved one. My parents are Hillhaven residents, and I could not be happier with the quality of care that they receive from every staff member. Notably, Kelly, Karen, Jennifer, my father's nurse, and Rosy, his aide, have gone above and beyond what is required of them to ensure that my parents' needs, financial, physical and emotional, are met. The facility is clean and immaculate. My parents' bedrooms are tidy, clean and large. I was able to bring in any items to make their rooms feel like home. My parents are well-groomed. Karen even ensures that my mom has lipstick on for dinner. In addition, there are daily activities (e.g., bingo and karaoke) to keep the residents engaged with life and one another. Hillhaven has provided my brother and I with great comfort and peace during a very difficult time. I am so grateful to Hillhaven, and cannot express my gratitude to the entire staff. Thank you! Hillhaven seems to be large, so I would imagine, maybe, some other section has better service. As far as what I witnessed, and what the roommate of my friend reported, service for my friend was bellow dismal; it was abysmal. My friend was in there for 3 weeks, after a heart attack and after cardiologists would not operate on her because of her multiple heart conditions being so far-gone cardiologists thought she could not wake up from anesthesia. At Hillhaven, with such fragile and sick patient, I had both my friend and her patient roommate report the medications were so strong, they felt their heads were completely dazed out. As I stood there one day with my friend being in a lot of pain, she called for help. Nobody came. I went to the front desk and ask for help. A nurse, in a pink outfit, mid 30s or around, little ponytail type of hairdo, came in, asked rudely why my friend was calling. My friend was so taken aback by the aggressivity, she explained she was fuzzy in her brain... and the nurse never let her finish her sentence. The nurse started screaming at her, berating her as if my friend were a child. It was beyond gross mistreatment of an elderly person. It was full anger at someone completely helpless. It was violent and extremely shocking to witness. After this nurse was done screaming, she left, and so she never learned from my friend what was hurting her and thus never helped with the issue. My friend roommate told me and other visiting friends that nurses would sometimes take up to 5 hours to come after my friend called for help, but then the roommate said the nurses would come quickly enough when we were around, family and friends. When my friend called me one day to see what I could do because no nurse was coming, I called the front desk, to no avail. No one ever answered my call. What I witnessed at Hillhaven, and the testimony from my friend's roommate, make me hope I never, ever end up there myself. For sure, I saw a couple of caring nurses, and I am glad for the couple of reviewers who thought their patient at Hillhaven was receiving good service, but what I witnessed was beyond the pale ugly, inhumane toward the elderly. If karma does exist, I am sorry for the nurses for I am sure they will account for their poor behavior toward my very kind friend. read more

Lost both parents in this facility this year. Still can't get into my Dads room or get anyone to answer phone. Was great facility when it was family owned. Once Meridian bought it & fired remaining family members, it's been a horror story. Most staff is terrific. Administration is horrible. Find another place for your loved one read more

Not great if an elderly person needs convalescence. They over medicate and expect the patient to accept the staffs culture. Such a bad experience. read more
