Upon inspecting my McIntosh MX110Z Kasper discovered all I needed was a new mechanical set of RCA cables. Next he inspected my Compustar 8" Celestron Telescope power supply. It was obvious it needed components or capacitors because they were burned out. So I took my McIntosh MX110Z back out to my car; It took me about 5-6 minutes to do that. Upon returning back in Kasper had recapped my power board in 5-6 minutes. I was amazed. He didn't want to charge me anything, but I paid him for his great talent and genius. The tech was very professional and provided me a 400-level understanding of record players. Long story short: don't buy new record players. I went to this location with my new record player. There was no visible signage outside and it didn't seem like this store was open. However, once opened the space had a few audiophiles listening to music- serious stuff. OMG! Kasper is the Charlie Trotter of stereo repair! What an amazing business to go to, even if you are not having anything repaired. My first visit here was with The Doctor to have a receiver repaired. The physical space on the outside did not look like much, but when you stepped through the front door, you are transported to a very cool club vibe space, complete with TVs, music, and a jukebox. There is a sofa and a few high top tables to relax at while you wait. Kasper is an artesian and spends a lot of time with the customer, explaining exactly what needs to be done to get your piece back into working condition. And he is just as frank when it comes to repairing items that he feels would be a waste of his time and your money. The Doctor has taken several pieces there for repair and has been overjoyed with the work. The one thing that is required after work is completed is that the customer has to "audition" the repaired item. Kasper actually hooks up the item to allow the customer to test it, either listening to radio stations or spinning records. And they do not rush you during the audition. For one of The Doctor's audition for a receiver, it was hooked up to a turntable so The Queen could play one of her vinyl records. Kasper is so much fun to be around and he lets you bring in your own drinks so you can have one while you wait, and I love that! Although we were first time customers, he nonetheless invited us to return to his annual customer appreciation party the following week, which was a blast! We could not stay the whole night as we had plans but heard that there was a fire dancer! For the audiophile, I imagine coming here for repairs is like going to church or something. The few times I have been there with The Doctor and my bottle, the people coming in to see Kasper and the way they handled their items has a solemn and almost spiritual quality to it. I have an old Sony CD player that started messing up - skipping, not reading the disc. I sent an email to Stereo Rehab explaining the problem and wondering if they could fix it. If honesty could be sold, this shop would make a mint. They told me that Sony does not offer parts for older machines and that the cheap replacements from China, which they will not use, would fail quickly. I had wonderful experience using Stereo Rehab to take care of my beloved Marantz 2240. This unit has sentimental value to me because its the first stereo I purchased when I was 18 years old! I kept the unit through all the family moves and a recent downsizing. When I decided to get it out of storage and begin using it I took it to a different repair tech in Wisconsin that supposedly specialized in refurbishing/recapping these units. He had good recommendations from one of the online audio forums that I was following. Unfortunately, that experience was a nightmare . After 6 months and hearing excuse after excuse of why my unit wasn't complete I finally got my unit back. As soon as I turned it on I knew it wasn't done properly. The unit smelled like cigarette smoke, had a hum that wasn't there before and the AM/FM tuner still didn't work. I ran the unit for a few years until the right channel developed a intermittent problem. At that point I decided to find a new repair shop that could fix not only this new issue but also eliminate the hum and fix the FM tuner. I had heard good things about Kasper and Stereo Rehab from a couple of other audio forums. I also read their online reviews and decided to reach out and contact them. From the very beginning I was impressed. Kasper responded to all my emails very promptly. He advised that his average turnaround time was 4-6 weeks so I decided to bring it in before heading out of town for a few weeks. I stopped by on a Friday afternoon and was greeted by Tony. I was immediately impressed with his shop, office and stereo lounge! I've never seen anything like it. It was obvious to me that Kasper is more than an experienced electronics technician. He is passionate about collecting and restoring these classic stereo pieces back to their original design spec's. I'm always amazed when I watch someone skilled doing their craft and Kasper was no exception! We took my unit into their work area and Kasper asked me what issues I was having with my unit. After I gave him a quick summary he connected speakers and a music source to it and turned it on. He immediately heard the hum that I was experiencing. He also connected a antenna to test the AM/FM tuner. He asked about the history of my receiver and whether it had been repaired in the past. I described its repair history and mentioned that the most recent was a recap by a tech in Wisconsin that ended up getting arrested because he was scamming people. He mentioned a name and asked if it was him and it was! He knew exactly who I was talking about because he has been fixing other units that this guy had worked on. He proceeded to remove the cover and review the unit. He took measurements with his meter advising what the measurement should be at different test points all without a schematic. He tested one point that should have been 0v and it read 2.5 v and said that this wasn't correct and was probably causing the hum. He looked over the circuitry and pointed out modifications that weren't original and showed me a couple that looked really sloppy. In any case he had a good idea of what was going on with my unit and advised what he would do and what the cost would be. Tony described the next steps and timing as well as the invoice and payment process. After having gone through a really bad repair experience with the Wisconsin based tech I left Stereo Rehab knowing that my receiver was now in good hands. My unit was completed much sooner than I expected! I received an invoice with all the details of what had been done. The repair was done at the end of April 2022. It's January 2023 and I've been listening to this unit in my main system since then and it has worked flawlessly. About 2 years ago I purchased a Marantz 2270 because this was the receiver I grew up with. This receiver was manufactured in the early 70s so they are about 50 years old and as you could imagine a 2nd hand receiver that old was going to need some work. I had no idea the crazy rabbit hole of Chicagoland vintage stereo repair I was about to enter. I kid you not, I went to 7 different places over the course of 2 years in 2 different states. I will spare you all the details, but the first place I bought the unit from and the first supposedly "best and most reputable place in Chicago" I brought it to for repair were not exactly honest and I felt taken advantage of. The store I took it to for repair held it for 6 months, it was a joke. After I got it back, the unit did work, but something just wasn't feeling right. Some more time passed and I remembered from 2 years back when I did my original research, I saw this place on line called Stereo Rehab that was only open 2 days per week. Originally, when I saw this, I thought it was weird so I dismissed this repair shop as odd. What a mistake that was...... For whatever reason, 2 years later, I decided to take this twice repaired unit to Stereo Rehab for a third opinion. The moment I stepped into Stereo Rehab, I knew I came to the right place. This place is the Taj Mahal of Stereo repair. I have seen many businesses over the years and this place is a rare rare find. More importantly, Kaspar, the owner, is the Michelangelo of Stereo repair. As far as I am concerned, this guy, who I have never heard of and just met, should have his face chiseled into the side of Mount Rushmore. He took my stereo and in one week repaired all the poor repairs from the past and had it ready for pick up one week later. I literally couldn't believe this guy existed. Not only does he give you a private consultation on the spot, if appropriate, he will open it up for you and tell you what's going on with your unit when you drop it off. I took my Vintage Technics SA400 in for service. It had been repaired years ago but was non working, sitting collecting dust in my basement. So a fix or pitch decision pivoted on sentiment and I took it down to Stereo Rehab. It is not a counter service repair ticket, we'll call you model. Instead you chill in a listening room while waiting for Casper to do a bench estimate while you watch. I learned a lot, especially about the cheap parts, a previous shop has used, and left with a written estimate. He did politely remind me that the cost would probably exceed its market value, but I went ahead. Kaspar turned it around in less than a week despite some tough parts availability challenges. Yesterday before leaving It played Steely Dan's "Asia" beautifully over the big JBL Monitors. This is also part of the process. A detailed invoice is presented via e-mail and you pay before you come in. One year warranty. I left with a great sounding working receiver and an bag of scrapped parts. I'm very impressed and have told my friends who still own vintage gear about this place. I plan to use this receiver in my basement office with some other gear I have. A place where not only your repair needs are being met to the fullest, but a place where you feel like you have known everybody there for years even though you only just met. Not only do they have an amazing front of house listening area, but their repair service is second to none. The owner (Kaspar) went over what he was doing in detail and what repairs were needed. He even let me watch the whole process. He repaired my amp, that I thought was unable to be fixed, quickly. It's working like new again. This is a story about the American dream and honoring a legacy. When my father arrived in America, he shared dreams every American had: owning a home, having a stable job, enough food on the table, and starting a family. One day, while walking to work, he saw a Fisher 500-C in the window and owning it quickly became part of that dream. The Fisher 500-C has been in the family ever since. While growing up I remember the Fisher 500-C sticking out like a sore thumb. As the paint on the walls, furniture in the living room, and televisions on the console came and went, there she was. The Fisher stood the test of time in a dusty corner of the living room and became an ornament of a time long gone. I fondly remembered how this was one of my father's prized possessions and decided to give it another life for the next 50 years. After all, the 500-C was built during a time when someone actually soldered the circuit from point to point, so the historical value was very significant to me. It was and is a unique piece of American history. I took it upon myself to get it serviced at a local shop in New York City, which became a nightmare! The shop I originally brought the 500-C to for repairs stole all my valuable Telefunken 12AX7/ECC83 tubes, butchered my power supply, and charged me a premium price. My 500-C was red plating and smoking! I brought this to the attention to the shop and they wouldn't take any responsibility and claimed I shorted the speaker cables. Fearing the complete loss of my 500-C, I urgently reached out to a local vintage salesman in New York and he referred me to Casper at Stereo Rehab. This is where the review begins. I reached out to Casper via e-mail and explained what had happened to my 500-C. Casper called me back within the hour and it became evident that Casper knew my 500-C like the back of his hand; he walked me through some tests and the parts that were replaced over the phone. We concluded that the "repairs" actually destroyed the unit; everything needed to be undone and fixed correctly. The next day, I sent the 500-C from New York to Chicago. Casper explained everything that he needed to do via phone and e-mail; communication was very professional, transparent, and quick. He checked-in at every step and always kept me in the loop. About 6 weeks later, I got an e-mail from Casper documenting everything that was done to the Fisher. From the first call to the last e-mail, everything was flawless and as expected; Casper is an expert and a true artisan. When the 500-C came back from Chicago, I was a little skeptical. I didn't want to expect much since the previous shop nearly turned my living room into an inferno. I auditioned the 500-C and it nearly brought a tear to my eye. I have never heard her sound so great and refined. There was absolutely no hum. I repeat: there was no hum! Every channel and knob was noiseless. It was so unbelievably quiet that anyone could have thought the 500-C was solid-state receiver. Even weeks later, as I'm writing this review, I am still amazed at how perfectly the servicing was completed and how musical the 500-C sounds. I am eternally grateful! Casper saved an American dream, continued a legacy, and restored a relic of the golden age of American Hi-Fi! They explain what they are doing, and they are truly upfront with their customers. I will be bringing more stereo gear to them to get fixed, and can't recommend them enough. Took my ~1973 (?) SR-1050C turntable here on a recommendation from a stranger at a record store. I bought the turntable in 2020 and it had started to spin very slowly. I only recently got into the hobby so I didn't know where to start to fix it. Took it into Kaspar's shop and he's hosting a party with live music and beer for his customers! When I came in he stopped his host duties and diligently helped me while his sophisticated vintage audio clients eagerly listened in. Turns out the bearings needed to be oiled and a spindle (I think that's what it was called?) needed to be sanded down. Kaspar diagnoses and fixes it in not even 60 seconds. Friendly the whole time, talking me through what he's doing, taking the time to teach me. He gave me additional advice on the turntable that I didn't even know I needed, and then told me how to travel and move with it. (I'm moving to LA from Chicago in a couple months). On top of that he didn't even accept payment for the service, wouldn't accept a tip, offered ME a beer, and then invited me to the party he was hosting with his family, friends, and clients! I had full intention of staying for the party but was illegally parked, so I drove around a bit and when I couldn't find a parking spot I figured it's not in the cards today. My experience was truly unique. I can't promise that you'll get free service, a beer, and an invitation to a cool party with live music every time you come here, but this guy knows his stuff. He fixed my turntable immediately (took me longer to write this review than it took him to fix my turntable!), treated me with respect and kindness, plus you could tell that his clients are sophisticated and knowledgeable when it comes to their equipment, and the respect they had for Kaspar truly showed. What more do you need to decide to take your equipment here? Edit: Hi Kaspar, hope you read these! Turntable was spinning at 33.33 RPM in your shop but plugged in at home it's only a hair over 32rpm. Took a Sansui 9090DB that I've owned since new in '77 into Stereo Rehab to get it working properly again -as it was sitting in my attic for the last 20 years. I was blown away by the place, the other customers, and most notably Kaspar's knowledge and gravitas. It's weird the transformation that took place there. I walked in to get an old stereo repaired , but when I walked out I had a new friend in Kaspar, and the same excited feeling I had when I first purchased the Sansui and couldn't wait to get it home, hooked up, and to once again start enjoying its blend of 1970's craftsmanship, beauty, and the wonderful music it makes. Brought over my Yamaha CD-C600 for repair after the disc tray would no longer open or close. Kasper took a look, repaired in seconds, tested to make sure everything was working and playing right and I was on my way. So grateful to find a repair shop that focus on service and quality. Very honest people didn't try to take me to the bank as a matter of fact they didn't even charge me to look at my turn table they adjusted the tone arm and told me that's all it needed. I would highly recommend this place the only thing is they only open Friday and Saturday but hey it's still worth it. read more
