I was extremely disappointed with my first time visit with Dr. Larry Shemen…read more I had an episode of Vertigo, for which I called for an ambulance to the ER at LIJ Northwell in Forest Hills, and was admitted to the hospital later that day. After a two day stay and extensive testing with clear/negative results (EKG, CT, MRI) the attending doctor at the hospital recommended that I follow up with an ENT as an outpatient. I was referred to "Dr." Shemen by a friend, a nurse who gave him excellent reviews. The "Dr." informed me that I have Diabetes. His comment was based on blood tests from my hospital visit four days earlier, in which my glucose levels were successively 138, 103, and 110. He mentioned that I checked it off as a condition on my 'new patient form' but hid it from my view when I questioned him about it. He clearly does not know what he is talking about and made an arrogant & presumptuous diagnostic mistake. He had no test results in front of him for A1c levels. I informed him that neither my primary care doctor, of 20+ years, has ever diagnosed me with Diabetes, nor did the hospital make any such mention of my glucose levels being high or that I have said condition. He asked what I did for a living, and when I told him my profession was guitar repair, he informed me that I had hearing damage "from being around loud guitars all day," without administering one single test. He also informed me that my vitamin D and B12 levels were low, again without those levels being present in the hospital blood test records. My blood pressure and vitals were never taken during this visit. He looked into my ears with a hand held scope, and told me my ears were fine. He did not administer any tests for my middle ear or inner ear. He informed me that my problem with vertigo was not caused by my ears canals, it was metabolic and that he would not treat me further until I saw my primary care doctor for blood work. I saw my primary care doctor the following day, who dismissed every 'diagnosis' from "Dr." Shemen. My PC reviewed my blood tests from six months earlier; my glucose, vitamin D and B12 and A1c levels were all within the normal range. He commented that they could not possibly have changed so radically in that time till now, so he did not see how that diagnosis could be concluded without current tests for "Dr." Shemen to compare. Needless to say I will not follow up with Larry Shemen, and I hope he eventually gets his license to practice medicine.

He took the time to answer all our questions and followed up, checking on my son several times to ensure he was healing well. I typically don't write reviews, but I felt it was important to share my experience regarding the…read moretreatment I received from a staff member at the front desk. I was particularly concerned because many of the patients there are elderly, and it's disheartening to think that my mother or anyone else could be treated in such a manner. Having previously worked in an ENT and Allergy clinic, I was trained to always treat every patient with respect and kindness. I was never disrespected when I needed to obtain a referral from my doctor; I simply informed the staff that I would call my doctor to have it entered into the system. However, one of the front desk staff raised her voice and demanded that I "sign this now," as if I were a child, while I was on the phone with my doctor. I hope this isn't how she interacts with all patients. In my experience working in clinics, it's crucial to communicate with patients in a respectful manner. The front desk staff are often the first point of contact, and politeness and respect should be core values in any clinic. On a positive note, I found the doctors and staff in the back to be very welcoming and respectful.

After a disappointing experience at another of their Astoria locations, I stumbled upon Dr. Levy…read more It was like a breath of fresh air. I felt a sense of calm and professionalism from the moment I stepped into her modern and clean office (a stark contrast to the other Astoria locations, which are dated and stuffy). Dr. Levy herself was a ray of sunshine. Attentive, patient, and thorough, she took the time to truly listen to my concerns and explain my condition in a way that was easy to understand, unlike the previous doctor who rushed through my appointment. Dr. Levy created a space where I felt comfortable asking questions and getting all the needed information. Her approach to treatment was collaborative, not dictatorial. She explained the various options available and discussed the pros and cons of each, making me feel like I was an active participant in my healthcare. Most importantly, she offered practical steps I could take to alleviate my symptoms right away, which was a welcome relief from the feeling of helplessness I had after the previous appointment. If you're looking for an ENT doctor who is as skilled and compassionate as she is, Dr. Levy is your answer. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to anyone needing an ENT specialist. I would've given five stars if it hadn't been for a mix-up with their appointment office. A mistake on their end delayed my follow-up by eight days. Ask for a text or email confirmation so the same doesn't happen to you.
