In 2017, I Yelped a 5-star review for Stephen Walks Dogs when he first accepted our Old English Sheepdog into his pack. At that time our family had just moved to Santa Rosa, and our dog was only a bratty 1 year old, and a handful. Stephen helped train and our pup into the great family dog that he is today. Fast forward to 2024, and our family now lives in the peninsula (Hillsborough), and we STILL send our now 8-year-old mature OES dog to Stephen for boarding. In fact, we will drive our Sheepers up to Stephen on average about every three months just so that our dog can have what we call "Stephen time". You see, Stephen is not just any dog walker, or dog boarder. He is the real deal "dog whisper" and to us he is like family. Stephen gave not just our difficult to manage Sheepdog the training and attention that was needed, he also showed us what we needed to do. Stephen has been walking our dog Vinnie, a shepherd mix, for 3 years. Vinnie does 2 walks per week and he comes back so happy and tired out! Stephen has been walking, caring for and loving my dogs for nearly 14 years! We are on the second and third generations. They love him as much as the first! As it happened, my girl Rumor became very sick! She had exhibited odd symptoms, both Stephen and I had noticed them. After several nights in emergency care, I was told that she needed to go to UC Davis immediately. Stephen met me at the hospital. We were told that she was suffering from the effects of Myasthenia Gravis; a neurological disorder affecting not only her muscles, but affecting her esophagus. This enlargement of her esophagus had led to aspiration pneumonia. This pneumonia was not improving, despite constant antibiotics. Stephen said in effect: "Rumor will get whatever care she needs, no matter the cost"! I'm not going to recount the day we had getting her to UCD, and what transpired. It was long and hard. What anyone reading this needs to know is that Stephen got us there, paid whatever it took to get her checked in to help her. He paid a bill everyday she was there to insure that no lapse in care would happen. We spoke with Rumor's doctor twice each day for updates. Finally, after 8 days and much care, we were able to see her again! She was as excited to see Stephen as she was to see me! They had a love of each other that was amazing! Sadly, she could not recover as we had hoped and we had to say goodbye! And through all this, Stephen supported Rumor and me, along with all the pack. You should also know that the bill for that 9 days was $34000! Stephen paid $34000 to try to help Rumor live! That's love and dedication! And then, there's Rio! Rio was Rumor's much loved littermate. He lived on after Rumor's death. He lived sadly, and unhappily until I rescued Dama as his little girl buddy. Rio developed Cushings disease at 11. Tough to diagnose; so he went through much testing; weathered it like a champ! Loved going to the vets office; probably because everyone there fawned over him! As he aged, his arthritis became more prevalent. Stephen was so caring and helpful with Rio! He administered pain meds as Rio needed them and watched Rio for signs of distress and decline. When "that day came; I was fortunate to be able to go sit with and snuggle Rio before the appointment. Stephen drove us, carried Rio in, and cried with me when he was gone. read more

I consider myself very lucky to have met Stephen. Multiple people I know and trust recommended him to me even before I got my pup. Knowing that he is out there put me at ease because I knew we would get busy with work, kids, and stuff. It takes a village as they say and now Stephen is part our village and helps us with our puppy who we consider our 3rd child. At meet and greet he spent with me at least an hour if not more talking to me about how he introduces dogs to his pack, his place, how he walks the dogs. He is professional in what he does. I've left my 8 months old pup under his care multiple times. That includes daycare, walks in the neighborhood or other areas in Santa Rosa, and my dog always comes back taken care of, tired and happy. Any time I bring him back he just wants to run to Stephen. Let me just start by saying Stephen is absolutely wonderful with my dogs and they love him! I have 2 large dogs that are my babies. Maverick (3years old) is 102lb Newfypoo and Cruz (10 months) is 60lbs+ doodle mix. Both are giant love bugs. I was leaving on vacation and looking for a dog sitter since my mother is the only person I trust with them (she came with me and I've been needing a backup person) Maverick has a heart condition which requires him to take medication every 12hrs, so I am even more cautious about who I allow to watch them while I am away. I was referred to Stephen by my best friend whose entire family has been using Stephen's dog services for over 5+ years. They said nothing but wonderful things. I wanted to test the relationship (Stephen and my boys) out before I left for a week long trip since my boys are used to being with me 24/7 I didn't want them to be sad or miss me too much, I wanted to ensure they would have playmates and a good care taker looking after them ( as any good dog mom would and should!). The initial process was great. It made me and the dogs feel comfortable and not like they were going to sit in a crate(my dogs do not use a crate) and not be looked after. STEPHENS HOUSE IS A DOG PALACE!!! It made me so happy to see all the dogs happy and right at home. They stayed over night and the following day they were exhausted from playing all day, evening and the following morning. I get terrible anxiety when leaving my animals, but this time around, I felt at peace and knew they were going to have a blast! STEPHEN YELP Bev Barron You I had to go out of town for several days, and having met Stephen a few years ago (pre-pandemic) we got to talking about what he does. He was passionate about his love of dogs. How he knows them. Having gotten to know him better, as well as some of his doggie client humans, I knew that my pup would not only be in good hands, but in great hands. It was with a decent sized leap of faith that I had him take care of my 15-month-old Boston terrier, Bosco. I had been working with Bosco to get him leash trained, and learn some basic commands with varying degrees of success. I brought Bosco to his place for an initial meet-and-greet. Stephen for sure knew how to do this. Stephen has several dogs of his own. Dogs that were mostly on the larger size. I wasn't sure how Bosco would do. Would he be nervous around larger dogs? Would they go after him aggressively? Nothing could be further from the truth. Bosco happily went into the well fenced play area. The dogs pretty much had free reign of the yard and house. Bosco didn't flinch or shy away. At all. I was stunned. I really don't know dog behavior very well, but Stephen does. The place is clean. No dog smells, if you know what I mean. On the day I had to drop him off, I was more nervous than Bosco was! I couldn't bring myself to escort Bosco inside. Stephen met us outside, and brought him in. Bosco went happily. Stephen promised he would blow up my phone with photos and videos, and he sure did. Not five minutes after I dropped him off, Stephen had sent about a dozen or so stills, and two videos. What I saw was my pup being happy, confident and relaxed. Thís kind of communication continued through his 6 day stay. Which brought me great joy. And I admit it, relief. When I got home I was a little out of sorts because the return trip was...interesting. Yes. That's a good word. (It wasn't interesting. It was infuriating) When it came time to pick him up, I was going to be significantly later than I'd initially said I would be. Stephen was out with the pups he takes care of, including Bosco, and offered to bring him home to me. What he brought me was Bosco, but better. He's better on the leash. He isn't begging people food, he comes when called. Every time. And best of all, he's actually getting along well with my grandcat who is living with me. He stopped chasing her. Today, (June 18th, 2023) they actually walked side by side in the yard. Bosco brought her one of his balls to play with. She wasn't interested. Which is fine. He brought it to me and I tossed it and he got it and brought it back. Over and over. The cat watched. I think one day they might actually play with that ball together. I rarely take the time to write reviews. I have been a dog lover and a dog Mom my entire life. I have raised two labs, one from midlife to end of life and one from pup to end of life. When my dog Abbi was a pup, (almost 20 years ago), I had to leave town and Stephen was recommended to me by a few people I knew. They affectionately called him "The Dog Whisper," which at the time I had no idea what they meant. I quickly learned why they said that. He has a non verbal communication with dogs. I know it sounds crazy but I believe he has mastered this. My friends said he is amazing and would care for Abbi while I was away and that I would not regret my decision, and I never have. What they said about him was spot on. Stephen takes the time to truly get to know your dog. He has nicknames for each dog and he loves them like this own. He is the "DogFather" (as my kids and I call him) and has his own beloved rescues. I never once had Abbi stay with Stephen where she returned to me unhappy. We would often joke around with her about her HAVING to come home to us. She almost seemed sad to be leaving. Her coat seemed to be softer, (never verified but I swear he must just sit there and brush all the dogs in his care), and her eyes were brighter... her manners so improved. Happy. Tail wagging. Just a sweet loving girl. When we brought her to him to her final visit, (we knew it would be THE one. The last one. Stephen was so kind and so gracious to our family. We hugged and cried and we felt the reality and the loss of her in our lives approaching. He advocated for her. For her peace. She had advanced cancer and was simply so old,16/17 years old... It was time. He was love to our Abbi girl, which he affectionately called "Ab Fab Lab" and to us, he is still her angel. We had a very hard time letting go. She could hardly walk and her quality of life was terrible. I will never forget his kindness to us and to her that day. It was not about a loss of income or about him, he was all about her, love and compassion for her. He had cared for her since she was a pup and it showed. She loved Stephen so much. Every time we would say "Oh Abbi, we are going to go to Stephens" her tail would wag and she would perk up and go towards the door. She loved him. She always remembered. Fast forward to this year, to my Koda. My beautiful Doberman mix. He is a gem. He has already stayed with Stephen and it was like sending my crazy reactive puppy into a time machine. He came home so happy and so much better on leash! Less "Bitey" after spending time there. I know that spending time with "The Pack" (as we say) and walking with them, helps so much. Stephen will send updates to ease your mind when you are away and he often includes some dog psychology in the mix. I learn so much from seeing my dogs there with the pack when I am away. It is everything. Stephen has taught me so much about dogs, about life and love. He is very wise in his knowledge of dogs and he has taught me to be a better human for them. Most of the issues I have had with my dogs comes down to me. I have learned this. Stephen has taught me to be a better dog Mama without even trying. Just little tidbits here and there. They all add up and I pay attention. I have been very annoyed to read a few posts recently from some local internet trolls. They have condemned Stephens actions while walking a lot of dogs in SR. All of the information they share is false. Stephen would never step outside of a loving, assertive and strong relationship with his pack. You can see this if you know him and you will see this if you take the time to actually look for more than .3 seconds. I know from experience with my very strong Doberman, while on leash, I MUST stay grounded, assertive, alert, especially while at a very busy intersection. Stephen may not be all "warm and fuzzy" to passerby's while walking a large pack and I certainly would not want him to with my beloved dog on one of the leads. He takes that job seriously and protects the pack. He is lead and he must present as such. Anyone that knows anything about dogs would know this. I am grateful he keeps his attention on the pack and not the ignorant bystanders and nosey members of the public who know nothing about him or the amazing job he does. Stop staring. Mind your own Business. He loves these dogs...They love him. I wanted to take a moment to make it known how grateful I am for Stephen. He has been such a blessing in my life. I would trust him with my human children too (my dog is also my child) and I see him as family and this will never change. Met Stephen in 2018, when I had to go out of town and needed to find someone to watch my 13-year-old Yorkshire Terrier. I wasn't sure how she would do given her age, she was a bit particular by this point, but she instantly liked Stephen. Stephen took wonderful care of her, sending pictures and videos to ease my mind. When we got a second dog, who had anxiety and didn't particularly like other humans or dogs, I was worried. I shouldn't have been. Stephen took it in his stride and gave her time to adjust. I was referred to Stephen by another boxer owner and I have been so happy; my dog LOVES him. Bishop is a 1 year old boxer who needs structure around other dogs and Stephen gives him that. Walking with 10 dogs and not being allowed to go crazy had been wonderful for bishop. He's is now calmer and better behaved, even giving other dogs their space. When I went on vacation, bishop spent 2 weeks with Stephen. I got videos and pictures of bishop playing and even passed out on Stephen's bed. sounds rough. I found Stephen from the picture in the Press Democrat 4 years ago. My big (147 lb.) chocolate lab Hershey needed exercise and socialization. I called Stephen who came to interview both of us and I just knew from the beginning that the H Bomb, a term of endearment dubbed by Stephen, was the way to go. Hershey was challenging at the start, but Stephen never gave up on him. Once he got him on the leash and Hershey reunited, 3 times a week, with his buddies they were off. I always loved the way he talked to the dogs and reassured them at every step. The dogs just know what he wants them to do. It is so amazing to watch. I boarded H with him and when he entered the yard none of the dogs, not one, became aggressive or barked at him. They all did the "dog greet" thing and then everyone just settled in. I knew he would be safe, cared for and loved while I was gone. Stephen is so kind hearted and loving with the dogs. As Hershey's health started to declined and he lost his eyesight he still came to get him and the walks were a little shorter. He just knew how far he could go and how much H could handle. It was sad to see him lose his place as one of the pack leaders but he navigated to Stephen's side where he knew he would be safe and he was. As I am still mourning the loss of my best friend, Stephen still keeps in touch and is encouraging me to open my heart again which at some point I will. Would I recommend Stephen to walk your dog? Finding a cat-sitter before was always a hassle, because it's hard to find someone who doesn't just show up, fill up the food bowl, and leave. Cats need some love and attention, too! Stephen is awesome because not only does he come and feed the cats when I'm away, but he also treats them like the social animals they are. Stephen came to our home for training an aggressive Pomeranian to our old poodle mix. We had a baby gate up to divide the dogs & give our poodle a safe space. Stephen speaks dog! We have a 4 year old black lab, Zeek, with whom Stephen has been walking off and on for about 3 years, as well as boarding him as-needed (averages 2-3 times per year). We could not be happier to have found someone we can trust our furry family member with. Does Stephen cage the dogs? Nope! They get full run of his house when he has them for an hour, a day or a week - in fact my dogs favorite spot? Stephen's bed. Zeek, who is no little lab (he's just over 100lbs) sprawls out and snoozes the day away on a king-size bed, a treat he does NOT get at home. Stephen treats the dogs as if they are his own, because while they are in his care they are part of his pack. He brushes them, feeds them, plays with them and nurtures them. He often sends you photos and video's when you've left your dog so you can see exactly how your dog is interacting with the other pooches. Zeek has gotten so familiar and comfortable with Stephen, that he no longer barks when Stephen comes through the door to pick him up for their twice weekly walk. Anyone who knows Zeek knows this is a HUGE accomplishment in love and trust, because Zeek is ALL bark (though no bite). We found Stephen through a recommendation of a flight attendant. He is very knowledgeable about dogs and has been such a blessing. Not many walkers could handle our two large dogs and he does it effortlessly. He is very reliable and has pointed out things happening with our furry babies before we even notice. I think Milo is beginning to understand the days of the week; he seems to get excited when Tuesdays and Thursdays come around as if he knows Stephen is coming by to pick him up. This guy is Sonoma County's dog whisperer. I'm an overprotective mom and don't trust my dog with, basically anyone. Yet when a family emergency forced me to board my girl for a few days, I called Stephen. When I picked up my girl she was playing with her new pack of buds, and now I use Stephen for her beloved pack walks regularly. Stephen's home is my dog's second home and knows he is well loved and safe. My rescue dog has anxiety issues that Stephen is superb at controlling and my dog also has had chronic hepatitis for several years that Steven kindly medicates and assists with a special diet daily when dog sitting. Additionally, Steven often goes out of his way to meet me on my way to work to pick up my dog saving me time with my irregular work schedule. I travel a lot and always know that Stephen will take care of my dog for any length of time with the same love and care that I would give. I am so appreciative of the care, concern, attention, and love Stephen gives to my dog and all the dogs under his care. read more

Stephen is also an excellent resource for behavioral consultations. I say all this from personal experience. He was able to manage and lead my two unruly pit mix twins when nobody else was. I always felt completely at ease handing my girls off to him, knowing that their strength and dominant personalities were not too much for Stephen to handle and that they would be protected and well loved under his care. They were always beside themselves with joy every time he arrived to get them, and happy, satisfied, and well exercised when they returned. I couldn't have asked for more.
