I had successful surgery on my epi-retinal membrane (right eye) ... and, removal of floaters (left eye). But that's not what I want to communicate to prospective patients.
I had assumed that I had to go to UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Clinic, for the best care. Indeed, the surgeon at Jules Stein is highly rated. However, the UCLA office is a total mess ... a disaster. One day after my diagnosis appointment, their office called me and told me I was due in THE NEXT DAY for open heart surgery! And, it went "downhill" from there!
I know I have to take pre-op eye drops, but I didn't get the prescriptions on time from Jules Stein. I didn't get instructions (written or spoken). In frustration, I drove down to Jules Stein for the prescriptions and instructions. Nobody was in the office ... but a secretary printed out the materials ... but they were largely incorrect; the wrong ones for a different procedure.
I was shocked, because those (silly) instructions stated that I had to remain "flat on my face" the for 24-48 hours post-op. (I called down and "nobody knew nothin' about this detail). Now, how was I going to get from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara? Maybe I could have been tied to the hood of my car like a dead deer? I then tried to book a hotel (to stay on my face), but I couldn't find a nearby hotel ... Cheapest rooms were $500 per night ... miles away (Lunatics!) Remember, ZERO help or recommendations from Jules Stein ... just total confusion!
Two days before my scheduled surgery, I got my prescriptions (faxed) and I was supposed to be taking them a full week before surgery. I called down to UCLA because my pharmacist said one of the medications was wrong, but UCLA/Jules had no record of me at all! I was LOST in the madness of UCLA ... nowhere to be found! Furthermore, being somewhat snarky, the Jules Stein office is old and grungy (think greasy office chairs). I cancelled the surgery!
Frustrated, I contacted Dr. Couvillion in my home town, Santa Barbara. The Retina Consultants Santa Barbara office is fantastic: a perfect blend of contemporary art and super-friendly efficiency. They could win an award! I was given proper written and spoken instructions, and the prescriptions well in advance ... and received several phone calls to make sure I was "on track."
I have worked in surgery, and was stunned at the size of the room and equipment in their OR. (I actually sat up in "shock!"). The anesthesiologist was phenomenal. The nurses were lovely. The surgery, a tricky one, went perfectly. But, here's my point:
If you are having retina issues ... be confident that the Santa Barbara clinic is first rate. I do not recommend going to Jules Stein. Jules Stein was probably excellent ... but that was a LONG time ago. In fact, people in Los Angeles should consider coming up to Santa Barbara: no "traffic nightmare," plenty of parking, and the best eye surgeons possible. All the physicians at the Santa Barbara clinic are terrific. I specifically like Dr. Couvillion (he and his father took sailing lessons from me a few decades ago). Good luck to you. read more
