I was referred to Dr. Jacobsen from my GP as I am along term ophthalmology patient as a result of a 50 year history of chronic iritis, and a prior surgery for a detached retina. At this point, I was seeking to have a cloudy lens corrected in one eye and the removal of a cataract in the other. This resulted in seeing Dr. Jacobson multiple times in order to accomplish these goals. Advancements in eye care over my 50 year experience are extraordinary and I was a beneficiary of this progress through the education and experience of this doctor and his very able staff. Both of my problems have have been solved. The cloudy sense was resolved in Dr. Jacobson's office and I had outpatient cataract surgery to resolve that problem. I experienced EXCELLENT care in surgery and in follow up and rational, considerate advice. Dr. Jacobson seems like a very nice guy, but every single part of my appointment at his office was a struggle. After trying my new prescription for a week, I've had to go back to my old lenses until I can make an appointment to get them fixed at another office. At this office: 1. I was referred by my doctor to a different optometrist's office. Dr. Jacobson's staff called me to make an appointment with them and did not clarify that this was not the optometrist who I'd been referred to. 2. Because this office doesn't take VSP, they charged me upfront for an eye exam to update my prescription. They should have checked on my insurance when they called me to make the appointment, and told me if it wouldn't be covered here. 3. After paying for the exam up front, I was continuously told that I probably didn't need one anyway and discouraged from getting my prescription updated. I insisted, in part because I had already paid. No one offered to give me a refund. 4. Dr. Jacobson and his staff all tried to tell me that they don't like to update prescriptions for "people your age." No one asked or cared that my current lenses were 3 years old. So they dilated my eyes a second time and tested me again, to make sure I wasn't faking my way into a stronger prescription. This time, the staff assistant stopped speaking me to beyond, "1 or 2, 3 or 4," and then handed me the prescription and left the room. That was the end of my appointment. I have been going to to the optometrist for over twenty years, and I have never received such poor results. My vision has been blurry with my new prescription, and I will be going to a different office to try again. read more

I visited Dr Jacobson in May for an eye exam and prescription for contacts. He encouraged me to try daily contacts which I did and these have been extremely uncomfortable most days. I've since learned that daily wear lenses are quite challenging I need a revised prescription for 2 week contact lenses. After calling the office I've learned he is at a new practice, unable to write the change for 2 week lenses and no longer writing prescriptions for contacts so this will require me to get another eye exam. I've visited many physicians in my lifetime, and have never felt compelled to leave a subpar review. I was really disappointed with my visit with Dr. Jacobson. His reviews were good, so my expectations were high. Unfortunately for me, I found him to be dismissive, a bit condescending, and hurried. I'm sure the eye assessment part of the visit was thorough and accurate, but because of the nature of our interaction (he seemed rather bothered by my questions), I have less than full confidence that the prescriptions I left with will meet my requirements. I had a wonderful experience at Eye Specialist of Santa Barbara. I have an eye condition and needed plugs inserted into my tear ducts. Dr. Jacobson made the process extremely easy and comfortable which is saying a lot because I'm a bit anxious when it comes to eye procedures. I took my 13 year old daughter to see Dr. Jacobsen because she was complaining of not being able to see things close up, feeling like her eyes were tired, and getting daily headaches. My daughter is on Cen-Cal and the doctor did not want to give my daughter a prescription because glasses would cost to much and suggested I go to the 99 cent store and purchase a pair of reading glasses and get eye drops for her. My daughter left his office in tears and we went to CVS and she tried on readers and the strength he suggested was not strong enough so she tried on stronger strengths and found the one that corrected her vision. I then called back Dr Jacobsen and he again brought up the cost. My daughter has Cen-Cal, the glasses were not going to cost me a dime!! Even if I had to pay for them, it should have been my decision to make and not the doctors. Maybe Dr Jacobsen should stop seeing Cen-Cal patients. On a plus side, the office staff was absolutely amazing. read more

We recently moved from LA to SB county. I hadn't been to an eye doctor, but a few weekends ago I had an emergency regarding one of my eyes. I went to the emergency room, but unfortunately the Dr there complicated the issue and I left in more pain than when I entered. Dr. Jacobson was the on call eye doctor, and after explaining my situation he agreed to see me at his office on a Saturday. He was extremely professional and competent and was able to alleviate my concern and symptoms after running several different exams. He followed up with me several days later during regular office hours and he and his staff were outstanding. His depth of knowledge was reassuring and his willingness to address all questions and concerns without it seeming like a burden or that he was pressed for time was the antithesis to most doctors. Despite seeing me at the end of the day (after conducting in surgery in Ventura all day), Dr. Jacobson spent approximately 45 minutes meeting with me - first listening to me speak about my eye problem and taking a comprehensive medical history, then performing an exam, then talking with me about possible causes and treatments for my eye problems. Dr. Jacobson was extremely knowledgeable, and knew a great deal about how my eye problems might be related to other medical concerns. I have seen many doctors over the past few years, and two others ophthalmologists for this same problem, and Dr. Jacobson was the first and only doctor who has taken this amount of time to talk with me and consider my situation.
