I recently went to physical therapy at Sutter/Sansum for "low complexity issue" neck pain. My…read moreinitial appointment lasted ~40 minutes and I liked the physical therapist I saw, but I was then hit with a $450 bill after my insurance discount for this appointment. This is exactly 3x more than the bill I received for an initial 1 hour appointment for a similar issue at another provider in town (I went to Hayashida last year, which has now been bought out by Sutter. Coincidence? Probably not). In both cases I had not met my deductible, so this is not the reason for the huge price difference, they actually just billed way more at Sutter. I tried fighting this bill and Sutter's billing department's responses were confusing and misleading--presumably intentionally so. They also claimed that this is "fair market value" for the services provided. From my experience and what I've heard from everyone I've spoken to in town, it is not FMV. Unfortunately, all of my care is currently through Sutter but after this experience I am looking into switching to different providers despite really liking many of them. I strongly recommend avoiding Sutter Physical Therapy and Sutter in general.

I asked him about some discoloration on my toe nails. He barely glanced at them & said nothing. I asked him again, what I should do? His response? "Paint them". Wow. Great advice, Doctor. As I was leaving & was halfway out the door, he said: "go eat a salad." We weren't even talking at that point. I was leaving & we were done with my exam. To me that was incredibly cruel as having a weight problem is already difficult enough. If we had been talking about weight loss, I could understand his comment. But we weren't. I was almost out the door & he made that comment completely out of the blue. That comment made me feel so much self hatred. I wish I had been mad at him, but I took his mean words out on myself. Once I was forgotten about in an exam room. I waited about an hour after being put in there for my appointment. I finally went out & asked when I'd see Dr. Kay? Oh yeah, they forgot I was waiting!!! He never listened; always seemed inconvenienced; was rude; didn't take time to go through questions/concerns I had; and obviously made me feel like garbage for gaining weight. He knew I suffered from severe depression & was recovering from bulemia, as well as a self harm attempt, so those comments showed such a lack of care as well as professionalism that I wish I had changed GP doctors immediately. But I didn't. I wasn't strong enough or brave enough, so I was so glad when he retired. The doctor who took over his practice, Dr. Fen Liang is a dream! She is everything an amazing doctor should be. Dr. Kay, at the end had no right to be treating anybody because it is completely obvious that he did not care one bit about his patients or their mental/physical health. I'm so glad he is gone!
