I visited Dr. Stephen Chermol's office the morning of 11/22/23 and it was an absolutely appalling experience. It was my first time getting a periodontal cleaning and the hygienist did not discuss what to expect or the work that she would be doing, she simply began working and it was an extremely painful experience. I have a high pain tolerance, but halfway through, I had to ask her to stop because of the extreme discomfort. She eventually offered me a topical anesthetic, which at this point, she only applied to half of my mouth.
Once she finished the cleaning, Dr. Stephen Chermol came in to do a final exam. He asked if I had any questions, I said no questions, but I told him that it was my first cleaning and it would have been nice to have been told up front what to expect and offered the anesthetic. Dr Chermol then became extremely defensive and aggressive, raising his voice and telling me that it was no different than a regular dental cleaning and they would have no way of knowing my gums would be sensitive. I told him it was much different than my regular dental cleanings, and his response was to scream at me, yelling "I don't know what your dentist does." Dr. Chermol's behavior was so monstrous that I had to get up from my chair and immediately leave.
Later, after researching periodontal cleanings, I found that it is standard practice to put an anesthetic over the gums due to the tools used and depths the hygienist goes under the gums to clean the teeth. Very different than a regular dental cleaning.
In all, save yourself the trouble and do not see this doctor. To be triggered so violently that you would scream at a patient because they asked to have been told up front of the potential pain of a procedure is beyond me. Unprofessional is too kind of a word to describe his unhinged and unethical behavior. read more
