My mother's experience with Topeka Oral Surgery was one of the worst medical encounters we've had…read more I was in the room for the entire extraction. The dentist was rough and impatient; my mother was making noises from pain and clearly distressed. I stayed quiet to avoid escalating the situation, but the lack of compassion and gentle technique was obvious. During the procedure an assistant walked in from another room without gloves, handed the dentist an instrument, and he immediately placed it in my mother's mouth -- shocking and completely unsanitary. After the extraction my mother was left in severe pain. The assistant told us she had sent the prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics, but when we went to the pharmacy nothing had been submitted. We waited in the parking lot for over an hour until the office returned from lunch and finally sent the scripts. This delay and the poor communication showed a dangerous lack of urgency for a patient in pain. Additionally, they kept my mother's original partials and never returned them despite requests. Given how unprofessional the process was, I have reason to suspect those partials may be reused or resold -- which would be both unethical and unsafe. These offices appear to coordinate with Michel Dental next door who referred my mother to them; my mother later received dentures from that practice that did not fit at all (oversized upper plate, uneven and painful lower plate). The combined experience felt exploitative and disrespectful. This was negligent, unsanitary, and deeply upsetting. I strongly recommend seeking care elsewhere -- find a provider who values hygienic practice, clear communication, and basic respect for patients, especially seniors.

If you must brave oral surgery then you would do well to visit Dr. Spear's, Topeka Oral Surgery…read more Usually a visit to the dentist for oral surgery is a somber experience but not here. There classic rock wafting throughout the office as you're greeted by a team who wrote the book on customer service. When you walk in to the room where you will meet the dentist, you will immediately notice the pastoral landscape from the giant picture window. The experience was pleasant even when i was numbed with three needles. Dr. Spear has a sharp but delightful sense of humor and there's no need for laughing gas when you have a Dentist with humor like this. Meg, his dental assistant is wonderful as well as she will reassure you all throughout the procedure. When it was finished a saw another assistant through the picture window feeding the wildlife as i stared through the big glass window. Squirrels, rabbits and birds were being cared for and you will be too. Cheers!

After i was taken back to the chair there was little to no conversation. People were flying in and out of the room. Dr Zeller came in and yelled at an assistant for not having something correct on his tray. He started numbing me and injected me a few times where it hurt so bad I about came out of the chair. I have been numbed many times but never had it be so uncomfortable and rushed. They then left the room to give the medication to work. When he and the assistants came back again he continued to berate them and what they were doing. He started working and, at one point, was frustrated and dropped a heavy tool right in the middle of my chest to grab something else. He quickly removed the teeth, yelled at the assistant for not placing the gauze correctly and started saying a few words about how my mouth would feel. At the same time the assistant was trying to tell me about "after care" reciting something that was rushed and she had said a million times I'm sure. She then stopped about half way through and said this is all printed and in the bag and escorted me to the desk. Dr Zeller was out in the hall pacing and yelling, "I need a patient, I need a patient!" I finished at the desk (again all very nice) and left. I felt like they were working cattle or a pit crew at a race track. It was very, very rushed and impersonal. I normally don't have ANY concern about my dental work but I can not imagine what someone that does would feel like going into that environment. I don't need casual conversation but at least treat me like I'm human. It's like the guy was trying to meet some quota for the day. No way would I let my family members go there and I'll let my dentist that referred me know too.

I posted about my experience on Facebook and Dr Zeller had the nerve to call me and threatened me!!! YES, threatened me!!! Now he has his staff stocking my fb page to see what else I will say. So I figured I would just post about him on here. He talks bad about all of his clients, so does his staff, he is awful to his staff. That being said, his wife is a employee there too and gets the same treatment. I would NOT recommend Dr Zeller to my worst enemy

I received multiple bills with inconsistent balances and no clear date-of-service explanation. Staff could not provide coherent accounting, and at times said to "ignore" invoices. My requests for clarity went unresolved, and the practice later terminated my care while claiming the issue was my fault. The Director of Billing was condescending in phone calls would not allow escalation of improper conduct to owners of business, or owners were part of the problem and front receptionists always rotating and never knew how or who to address issues to, all this prompted a complaint to the Kansas Dental Board. Would not use this company, one problem after another

I did not feel at all rushed, I was able to ask any questions I had, and he even followed up with me later in the afternoon after reviewing an X-ray they had taken to explain a possible issue with one of the roots of my tooth. I would definitely recommend Southwind Periodontics and Dr. Smith to anyone needing specialty dental work!

Now for the negatives, although I realize I was in extreme pain, that is not a reason to be gruff. If a patient tells you of a preexisting condition before the work starts that means he is trying to work with you, not make your job more difficult. If you were in pain and I was the dentist would you appreciate being told I don't stand to do dental work , would you like to go somewhere else ? If you leaned me all the way back in the chair and I puked on you, would you have liked that better than me asking not to be leaned all the way back in the chair ? And also this was my first root canal, I didn't know what to expect, so if I wasn't the perfect patient, pardon me. You really need to work on your bedside manner sir, it would benefit your business

What? Now the 2nd attempt on May 9th I arrived early, start at 5pm take X-rays 5:15pm wait in a room. 6 pm still nothing, I left told the receptionist I'd be right back- went and got something to eat, 6:10 pm back in the same chair I was waiting in. 6:15pm sat in dental chair had measurements taken for the gums & was informed I should purchase there Oral B Rotary cordless toothbrush, and I need 2 separate cleanings. Then the Dentist showed up- I explained to him - are you running a puppy shop here? Of course not, as he reviewed my dental hygiene. He apologized for the long wait, and sent me back to the waiting room. 7:15pm, the assistant informed me what my out of pocket costs would be. I said nope! What's just the services cost? Again, a double cleaning! I only want a single cleaning! We sir, this is what has been recommended and that is all we're offering. Really! Now it's 7:30pm, I said I'll think about it! All I wanted was my teeth to be cleaned (6month intervals), I can't even get that! It's a gouging, pricing, over booked under staffed puppy mill.
