For funsies, we decided to pick up a dozen cupcakes to take with us. Talk about variety! But first, the customer experience of walking in: You are IMMEDIATELY hit with the smell of cake. Sweet, delicious cake. I imagine that's what heaven smells like. It's a small space, but the group makes the best it can with social distancing. Everyone is wearing a mask, and a hand sanitizing station is by the door and also by the register. All the cupcakes are protected by glass, and the colder sweets are protected in a clear fridge. And as appetizing as the cold cakes looked, c'mon. We were here for the cupcakes. They're legendary in the Valley. Our selection only had one duplicate: The lemon blueberry. And honestly, these massive muffin-sized cupcakes are huge. They're huge, dense, moist, and did I mention huge? They maintain their cupcake flavor without coming off as too muffin-like. And with eclectic toppings like HOT CHEETOS WHAT, decadent brownies, cherries, and candy corn (they can't all be winners, I guess), there's something for everyone here. My absolute favorites, in no particular order: Red velvet (Classic, delicious, traditional), strawberry (not cloyingly sweet, still fruity), German chocolate (ohmygodddd), and chocolate with a massive brownie plopped on top (guaranteed to satisfy your resident chocoholic). In fact, I loved these cupcakes so much I stopped by again before my drive back to San Antonio. The four and a half drive back was, indeed, torture. The smell was all-encompassing and you bet I tore into one as soon as I got home.

I'm pretty sure I can't even find fluffy jiggly cheesecake in San Antonio, what makes you think Brownsville would, for once, have the leg up on that trend? Well, I ended up eating my words. And friends, my words were in the form of this delicious cheesecake. So, we ordered this cheesecake through DoorDash, but we did also swing by the actual cafe in person to check it out. The cafe is pretty bare bones from what I remember, and they sometimes have cakes available to walk in and buy, but for the most part, they prefer you order ahead. And then we saw they did DoorDash. So. Yeah. Naturally, we got one. The cheesecake arrived with fresh strawberries on the side, and a light dusting of powdered sugar. Cutting into it was like cutting into a cloud. The taste? Wow. Heaven. Think the perfect marriage between angel food cake and cheesecake. It's so incredibly light but also retains a moist texture. I know these cakes use a lot of egg, but this cake wasn't eggy in the slightest. Overall, it was a delightful, satisfying slice and I think I vastly, VASTLY prefer it over regular cheesecake now. San Antonio has to get on the ball, cause this little shop nailed the recipe for Japanese cheesecake. A+, y'all. We'll need to order it again the next time I'm in town.

They have a respectable assortment of pan dulce to choose from, including the all-time favorites like conchas, empanadas, marranitos, the sprinkle cookies, and the sprinkle cake (recently re-branded as dot cake to the kiddos). The prices here can't be beat. In San Antonio, a selection of pan the size my mom got would be well over $20. We paid $12.50 for our haul. Of course, back in the day I'm sure that would have been much less, but by today's standards that's still an excellent price. The quality is also pretty good. I ate the giant Mexican wedding cookie that was shaped like a normal sized cookie instead of the quarter-sized balls you typically see. It was buttery and crunchy. So glad we got to try it. Me for the first time, and for my parents, a taste they haven't had since around the time they both worked downtown.

Merely having a few croissants and puff pastries among lots of Mexican baked goods does not make it a French bakery. Worker is friendly and helpful in explaining what the pastries are. The breads are $10.00 plus per pound. Two pastries cost me roughly $8 and change because one was super heavy and dense. There was even a smidgen of pineapple filling but needed to have a little more for textural contrast. The softened buttercream then rolled into sugar. I found the prices too high and the pastries just okay. The location is good but way too expensive for what it is.

It does take time to get your food as it is prepared when ordered so call ahead to place your order if you are short on time and want to sit down and enjoy your meal. The location is clean and welcoming especially with all the beautiful desserts in view ready for the asking. The owner explained they use no gluten which was perfect. I ordered the waffles, I am not a waffle person nor do I eat much bread, with a side of eggs and bacon, my nonCeliac friend had the french toast which had me second guessing my choice, she said it was really good. The waffles came topped with blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, came with a maple syrup, I ate both of them and really enjoyed them as well as the eggs which were delicious and the bacon was too. I took with me a few goodies and the jicama chips, all were so good even my nonCeliac, anti gluten-free husband really enjoyed. I could not believe I ate 1 item a day since I will not eat bread nor sugars that often but they were so good. This is definite detour we will be making every time we head out to the Island.
