But over time, things have changed -- not just for me, but for others who've come through here. What once felt like a supportive environment has started to feel like it's more about money than recovery. The tone has shifted. There's less compassion, more control. I've experienced moments where respect felt one-sided, and accountability was selective. For example, rules have become more restrictive, and staff decisions are sometimes explained in ways that don't reflect the reality many of us see or feel. There have even been claims of being "fully self-supporting" despite visible state involvement. When I first arrived, I would've rated this place five stars. Today, I can't honestly say the same. It's become more about filling beds than building people up. And while everyone's experience may be different, I think it's fair to say: this is a place where you do your time, but you may not find the growth or dignity you hoped for. This review isn't written out of bitterness. It's written out of truth -- because I believe others deserve to make informed decisions. Go elsewhere for support and recovery options. While this place is organized as a 501[c][3] non-profit corporation, their primary goal is rent collection. Interestingly they don't take checks, good old green U.S. currency is what they require (you have to ask for a receipt). I wonder how much of this goes into the pockets of the "managers". You can get kicked out without notice with no rent refund. They have also found out a way to get cash from DES food stamp cards, which is interesting since they have no retail grocery there. They certainly don't spend any extra funds on pest control, cockroaches abound, including the kitchen area. While they have daily 12 step meetings, newcomers, who often have the greatest need to share are discouraged or even berated for doing so. DON'T COME HERE!!! Step One helped me to get my life together after I destroyed it due to a terrifying Crystal Meth addiction. All of the gentlemen at this facility, both clients and staff members, are like family to me. They took me in when I had nothing but two crusty shirts in a dingy backpack. They have an outstanding scholarship program that granted me the opportunity to obtain a gfood handlers permit, as well as a permit to serve alcohol. If you know someone, or you yourself is ready to give up your old, self-condemning habits, I would recommend Step One to anybody. If I can get clean and sober, then anybody can. read more

Best halfway house I have ever taken my dad to. Hey its the only one I've taken him to.

My husband has been battling with alcohol for a long time, I work in the mental health/substance abuse field and I referred him to Step One in Phoenix to get the help he needs. Within the first couple days being there, he noticed bed bugs, needless to say the entire property is infested with bed bugs, staff refuse to do anything about this. How are these guys suppose to receive full treatment for recovery when they can't sleep at night because they waking up slapping for bed bugs and cant get comfortable. Taking that first step by coming there is a huge accomplishment by wanting to get help. This is not the place!! If you have a loved one there, get them out! Any company that is up and running should invest by bombing the entire property and helping these guys! Staff is reported they will remove a couch that was infested with bed bugs and has still remained on property. Multiple members confronted staff about the bed bugs being in their bedrooms now and staff reported that they need proof! Shut this place down immediately. Recovery is a joke to them and i's not right. read more

I came to Step One almost 7 years ago. I was homeless living on the streets with a serious addiction to meth. I tried to kill myself, I was so helpless. I was referred to Step One. They took me in with 3 cents in my pocket, providing me with a roof over my head, 3 meals a day and cable TV and a ride to find work. I had never worked a 12 step program before but I was willing to give it a try. Low and behold it works! Step One and the 12 steps has taught me that Recovery is in you if you want it. It doesn't matter where the facility is geographically. As for the meals they offer, one word-AWESOME! I have seen alot of people come and go, each with their own agenda. The joy is meeting those that are serious about recovery and how easily they become part of our family here at Step One. I can only only offer these works of praise to you Step One, they pale in comparison to the true value of the life you have given back to me. I am forever in your debt. It bothers me to see that some people just see the negative in everything. I can tell you this. I have seen numerous people be given a place to live for weeks and when they are supposed to pay the fees they agreed to dip out in the middle of the night. Step One Halfway House saved my life, gave me a new found work ethic and taught me the finer points of how to properly be both a responsible man and father. I had been homeless and addicted ten years prior to entering the program at Step One and upon entering their halfway house decided to finally take each and every suggestion they gave me on how to stay sober and be a man, and I have no complaints. The staff are all former clients and therefore much more compassionate and attentive to their client's seemingly unending needs and requests. While their turnover rates may seem steep, their recovery rates are among the highest in the country being as 25% of clients who enter the program achieve their goal of completing the program in 90 days with 90 days of sobriety under their belts. In a program such as this one that deals hands on with addiction - a condition of both the mind and body - you can only take from it as much as you are willing to put into it. Just as we're told not to judge a book by it's cover, do not be put off by their humble initial appearance because you'd be surprised what just a little bit of patience and hard work will earn you when you actually put in the footwork to achieve the small goals you learn to set along your long road to becoming a responsible adult. It is very hard for a place that deals directly with people such as myself who are by nature selfish and self-centered, to catch a good review - but in all honesty if you arrive at Step One Halfway House in search of recovery and a new way of life and you do the very few things of which the suggest to you, I promise that you will be amazed before you are half way through - Step One taught me the importance of being an actual man of my word and you now have my word that Step One is the best place in all Phoenix, AZ to both find and practice recovery from whatever you may be addicted to! I am, beyond a shadow of a doubt a satisfied customer and would recommend them to anyone finding themselves in a similar situation as I was before entering their facility. read more
