Gotta be honest, I spent years and years living in Chicago running by this place imagining it as…read moresome epic amenity-packed gym for the wealthy. I left Chicago last year, joined Equinox in New York, and triumphantly returned to Chicago for a work trip, picking a hotel as close to this gym as possible. My take is that this location is a loss-leader used to placate business travelers who have multi-club access. It's a mediocre gym with a nice locker room. Great for blowing off steam after work in a largely uncrowded gym if your employer is subsidizing your wildly expensive gym fees. Mine is. Compared to East Bank Club, which costs $235 per month, the Loop Equinox is laughable, and I question whether the three Chicago Equinox locations combined actually stack up to EBC on any measure except sheer convenience or imagined exclusivity. I think what a lot of people miss, and certainly what I missed as I formed my first impressions of Equinox, is that the machines and basically everything else, except the quality of the locker room, is the exact same as any competent gym in a big city. In fact, you could make a compelling case that the overall variety is worse here compared to the downtown FFC locations. I found that the blueprint for the location I frequent in NYC was nearly identical to this location's--it's an ordinary equipment layout that can make it so that one other person wanting to rotate through the machines can impede your workout. If you are living in Chicago reading Yelp reviews as you assess Equinox ($???) vs EBC ($235) vs FFC ($160 all-access), I would put this gym toward the bottom of the list. It's just crazy how normal it is in reality compared to how people (including me) perceive the branding.

This is one of the City of Chicago's six regional senior centers. This one is different than the other centers. If you are 55+ - you are welcome here. You have to be 60 to use the other senior centers. This one does not have some of the services the others offer, however, it seems to offer a lot more variety of classes and activities than the others. There is some info in the Chicago Dept. of Family and Support Services "Life Enrichment Programs".quarterly brochure which you can pick up at senior centers, libraries and probably some other city offices. You can also download a pdf. But the brochure only lists a sampling of the classes. At Renaissance Court you can pick up a calendar listing everything going on for the month. They also have some flyers with more info about some of the classes. Many classes are free, but some do have a fee. Some classes: chair yoga, hatha yoga, meditation & movement. Tai Chi, belly dancing, line dancing, variety of other exercise classes IMPROV, performance workshop, drawing, water color, book club and much more. You really have to pick up the calendar. On Saturday there is a Hoop Fitness class. Tried the class out for the first time. I don't remember being that good at hula hooping as a kid, so I was a bit skeptical about this. I met some ladies before the class that assured me that it is all about fun and not to worry. I probably spent more time picking up the hoop than twirling it. Instructor Andrea and rest of the class made me feel welcome and comfortable. Andrea is really nice and encouraging. Luckily, we did some other exercises with the hoop that did not include twirling it. The ladies were right - - it is great fun! On Fridays, you can get a 60 minute table massage for $30. This will be some of the best $$ you ever spend--if you can get an appointment. They can fill up quickly--Tisa is a very good massage therapist. Also, unless things have changed in the past year, you have to make the appt with the office and pay in advance. They didn't take credit cards, so I had to stop by to make and pay for the appt. My limited experience with Renaissance Court has been a good one. It would be nice to live closer and to be able to enjoy more of the activities more often. I do plan to try a few more classes and definitely to give that hula hoop another try :)

I recently tried Solidcore on a friend's recommendation, but I'm not sure if I'll be going back…read more Solidcore is mainly a Pilates studio that focuses on core strength and muscle endurance. They offer a lot of workout classes, and I attempted the full body workout. A few things were off-putting for me: - No warm-up at the beginning of the class and no stretches at the end. Stretches are key to ending a workout, in my opinion, so that was a bit odd. - The passcode provided by them did not work, and a lot of people were locked out. You could only enter the studio 10 minutes before the class. - The machine wasn't exciting enough for me to want to return. There were a few good things as well. For starters, shoutout to trainer Christine Fitzgerald, who was very patient with beginners. Overall, the studio and this form of exercise did not work for me, but I know many people who love Solidcore! I'm not sure if I'll try it again - most likely, I will not!

You can take Pilates classes anywhere in Chicago, but the staff and vibe of this studio is absolutely unparalleled. I had taken Pilates at their Rivernorth location back in 2022 and seemed to have found the class very challenging without proper guidance. My friends brought me to this studio a few weeks ago. I was intimidated to try the class given my past experience but this time, I booked Full Body beginners class with Lauren. The staff and the coach was truly exceptional. She gave me a quick guided tour, explained everything about the Pilates machine like reformer, cadillac, straps, how to adjust the equipment for different exercises. It def made me feel comfortable. Lauren's class was wonderful. She was patient and gave time to explore every impact movements. Even though the music was loud, her instructions were clear. The studio has very structured routines. Their workouts focus on the core stability that targets specific muscle group. I will keep going for Full Body Pilates slowly moving to the advance classes. For people who are new to Pilates and/or scared to try such a "Bougie" studio - don't be! This place is welcoming to all and great place to start your Pilates journey!
