This was our second time shopping around for furniture and landing on Steinhafels as our place to buy! When we walked in, Elizabeth greeted us about a minute later asking if we have questions or just looking around. We told her we were shopping for a sofa and possibly a lounge chair and just want to browse and see what they have. I'll tolerate, but really dislike clingy, overly informational sales people. Thankfully, she was not one of those people! She was helpful, concise, and told us one side of the store is primarily leather and one side has reclining, both of which we had no interest in, so I found that helpful in navigating our browse. She checked back in with us a couple more times, but by no means was pestering. We told her we found a sofa and chair set we liked, but were leaving to check out another store before committing. She understood, we exchanged names, and she told us when she'd be there until, and that she could be paged if/when we return. Although I've previously worked retail and management, I by no means have ever been interested in a commission sales job, but I can respect the hustle and good job these people do in their store. We visited a neighboring store, which fell short in selection, and returned within an hour. We asked for Elizabeth and she thanked us for coming back to see her and then proceeded to order us what we liked. One of the three items wasn't available til Jan, but the other items were able to be scheduled for delivery within a week! Perfect since Christmas and family are coming soon and we needed a sofa! We also love their add-on warranty (it was $100) you can buy for replacement furniture should basically ANYTHING happen in 5 years (pets, wine spills, cushion flattening out, etc). A previous dining room chair we had did crack and we got a brand new one! The Guardsman company was a bit of a hassle to deal with and get ahold of but they came through! Steinhafels just feels like a store who we can consistently trust and have confidence in for great products, knowledgeable professionals, and the warranty option if we need it. Next time we get furniture, we won't even bother shopping around! We wish they'd bring back the Epic discount though!! ;) read more

I've tried shopping here several times. Unfortunately, their disgusting markups on furniture and bi-monthly blowout sales seem to keep the sheep lining up. My wife and I still take a stroll through the store a time or two every year (to get ideas... The only reason I give this store 1 star). We were looking for a sectional for our family room this time. We came across a King Hickory sectional (very high quality built and grade 5 leather) store model on "clearance". The tag said: Was $19,999, now $9,999! Soon salesmen started hounding us and knocking off money because they needed to get rid of it. Long story short, their best price was $7,000. Not bad for once being $20,000, right? So we went to a local, much smaller store to build an exact match in grade 5 leather. A no haggling price of $7,700 for a brand new, not a floor model, how we want it King Hickory grade 5 leather sectional. That was the FIRST price. No ridiculous markups here. And I'm sure we have a couple hundred bucks of wiggle room. Update: Just for fun I went back to Steinhafels to price out a brand new one with the same leather as we had ordered from the local store. Their best price (giving me the deal of a lifetime, of course!) was $5,500 MORE than what we paid for the same couch! Are you $&!?ing kidding me????? Talked into purchasing $75 insurance plan (by manager) for sofa claiming that if it wasn't used after 5 years we would get the $75 back. But, we were not told the truth. After 5 years of not making a claim (even though there was an occasion to do so) there is no $75 "rebate" - and the credit can only be used towards another purchase - with restrictions. It can't be used for lamps or end tables, etc., in other words nothing they don't make enough profit on after allowing for the $75 credit. Deceived, will never purchase again. We purchased a lovely Taylor J king size platform bed and 3 coordinating pieces, manufactured by Witmer Furniture from Steinhafels in 2015. Fast forward 2.5 years later and the bed is currently in pieces! It has broken twice. It was repaired and then broke catastrophically again in a different place. I fear that our pet or one of us will be injured if we have this bed repaired yet again and continue using it. It's a ticking time bomb. It's not like my husband and I are hard on furniture. We've had a living room set for 10 years that looks brand new. We have antique pieces too that are in good repair. The bed broke from the gentlest of treatment because it is poorly designed such that all of the weight is positioned in the weakest places of the frame. Only 2 thin wood slats hold up each side of the bed. Three of those slats snapped off when the bed fell apart most recently. I contacted Steinhafels several times begging them to live up to their supposed brand principles of "quality" and "customer satisfaction" to no avail. The customer service representative flat out told me that Steinhafels won't reimburse us. Their policy is to stand behind furniture for 1 year and that is that. The manufacturer's warranty is only for the first year too. Excuse me, but I expect furniture to last much longer than that especially when it costs a small fortune as this piece did from Steinhafels. I'm advising you, the person reading this review, and all of my family and friends still in Wisconsin to shop elsewhere! Joybird, West Elm, even the big box retailers like Target and Walmart most likely offer better furniture than Steinhafels! I hope my grassroots boycott results in tens of thousands of dollars in lost sales because Steinhafels had the chance to make this right and didn't. Meanwhile, our last hope is that the extended warranty that we bought through Guardsman will result in a full refund so that we can purchase a new bed that is safer and more durable. Unfortunately, I remain skeptical this will work out favorably. Steinhafels really pulled the wool over our eyes. Customers beware. ------ I'm appending my original review above to share the latest news of my abysmal interactions with Steinhafels. I learned earlier this week from the manufacturer that our bed was supposed to have been installed with at least 2 additional leg supports to take the weight off of the joints by the headboard and footboard, the areas that keep breaking. The manufacturer's rep said, "Based on your description it sounds like none of the support legs were installed in the middle of the bed. These are designed to hold a large portion of the weight. If they are not installed all of the weight is transferred to the brackets." So the bed will keep on breaking as many times as we fix it since it never came with the right parts. Because my husband and I are not furniture installation experts, we would never have known the bed wasn't setup correctly. The problem originated with Steinhafels, though I doubt they will ever admit this. Essentially anyone, whether it was us or movers, could easily break this bed upon reassembling it. After no response from Steinhafels to my emails after 4 days, I called their customer service number again. I had the misfortune of being connected with "Ben," the customer service agent from hell. I kept asking to speak to a manager, but he kept me on the call as he is trained to do and the call quickly escalated out of control. He screamed that there was no way for me to prove that the original Steinhafels' installers didn't add all the parts that they should have. He even accused me of throwing away the missing bed supports! He blamed the movers. He blamed me. He scoffed, he badgered, he berated me. At one point he was telling me how Steinhafels is a business and how their goal is to make money. Gee, that's a real benefit for the customer who is paying for a broken bed. Glad they can still be making a profit while we sleep on the floor. He was so hostile, I hung up on him. After I stopped shaking, I called back and talked to "Ron," a sane and pleasant human being. He listened to my tale and sent a message to management. He even acknowledged that we wouldn't have known these parts were missing until now. Yes, exactly. Still, I have zero faith that this situation will resolve. Steinhafels really digs its heals in and rips their customers a new one in the name of "customer service." It's a fascinating sales strategy. Why not just keep existing customers happy, admit that sometimes there are mistakes and issue the refund? The situation would work out and I wouldn't be trying to deter EVERYONE from shopping at their stores. Duh. read more

The furniture in this place is great! Great designs and styles; however, the sales associates here are unprofessional they constantly follow you which becomes irritating after a point. The delivery process has been terrible as well. It took our sales person over a week to inform us they couldn't deliver on our desired date when he originally told us it would take him less than 24 hours to let us know if that date would work...after choosing a new date the shipping order still hasn't been confirmed. Went in multiple times doing some price shopping and testing out new mattresses. Tom, the salesman was extremely helpful and patient. After having me try out various mattresses in my price range, he helped me pick out a great mattress, and we quickly got everything set up for delivery. When my husband and I bought our house 5 years ago, we went to Steinhafels to furnish it. We were on a bit of a budget being a newlywed couple, and were able to find everything we needed within our price range. We picked out items that looked way more expensive than they were and had a great experience with the salesperson and with the delivery process. Well today we realized now that we are doing better financially, we should probably buy a nice mattress and bed set. We walked into Steinhafels expecting to be bombarded by salespeople trying to get us to buy the most expensive items in the store. So we were pleasantly surprised to meet Stephen. He gently approached us, and listened to what our needs were. He wasn't pushy, but he was helpful and present. He related to us, he let us lead and just helped us along the way. We ended up buying an amazing Tempur-pedic mattress and a beautiful bed set. The price was reasonable, especially with the no interest for 5 years Steinhafels credit card. We were even able to get $300 off some pillows and a mattress pad. I cannot wait for our delivery next week. They're even going to take our old, worn out mattress for us so we don't have to worry about disposing of it. I am so very happy with our experience today. I wanted to ask about the availability of a particular sofa, so I called the toll-free number listed on their website. The woman I was routed to did not seem very happy to answer my questions. She asked for the SKU #, and I gave her the # listed on the manufacturer's website. She responded with a surprising amount of attitude, as that # apparently was an "internal #" and not what she needed (though I'm not sure how I was supposed to know that). I received good customer service today. We received a defective mattress that was purchased the day after Thanksgiving 2016. In less than 12 weeks the coils failed. A service technician came today and his report allowed us to replace it at no charge with free delivery from Steinhaufels. Bought three separate things shortly after moving here and had all good experiences. I shopped at three different mattress stores all on the same street and this had the best mattress for a reasonable price. The salespeople weren't pushy and annoying, but were helpful when I needed help. The mattress was delivered promptly and they were careful walking through the house with it. I picked up a dresser and a table from the store to assemble and both look great. The dresser had a slight problem with one drawer but steinhafels sent me an email the day I got it saying if I had any problems to fill out a form and they'd come fix it (no cost to me). I took them up on it and the guy came and fixed it quickly and was friendly and competent. read more

They got at least two orders wrong. Open the boxes before you leave the store. They need to get set-up done right the first time. Our bed was unusable: the legs of the center support FELL OFF. We had no where to sleep until another "delivery" team came days later to fix it. When there's a serious problem with installation, it should be addressed IMMEDIATELY, not days later. ... the sales guy in the recliner department, is hands-down, the best salesman I've ever encountered. I don't remember his name, it was the beginning of last month, went in there to help my elderly disabled mother select a new recliner, my little brother was along as well. This guy had us laughing, and fully participating in the sale banter, even though all 3 of us have very little patience for salespeople in general. Have to hand it to this guy, who ever he is ... he has a bright future in whatever he does, while he is really really good at Lazy Boy recliner sales, I do believe he has a brighter future in whatever he chooses to do moving forward. He really sealed the deal when he started to flip over the chair, showed us the hardware underneath, made fun of the 'other brands' there, physically 'thrashing' the other brands shakin' 'em around showing their feebleness vs. Lazy Boy, this guy knew the Lazy Boy history down pat, and paired it with all sorts of bouncing around on the chair, showing us its 'hardiness', features ... I had tears in my eyes I was laughing so hard. Brilliant. We bought the warranty ... even though we rarely do that ... it is a rare day that i'll go out of my way to tell a salesperson, 'nice work'. The Lazy Boy salesman at Steinhafels, even if you don't need a chair, just pretend you want one, then kick back and watch the show ... you'll want to buy one once 'mr lazy boy' does his thing ... read more

A fine place for inexpensive furniture. The sales people were a tad off-putting. They seem to want to desperately try to make a personal connection with you instead of talking about furniture. This happened with three separate sales people. I think this is how they try to get around the "high pressure sales" idea. We didn't like it very much. We would have much preferred to talk about the bed we were trying to purchase. The small talk was very distracting but that was probably the idea. Good selection and I was happy to see they carry some furniture made of solid wood as opposed to laminate. We chose to pick up our bed frame instead of opting for their somewhat expensive delivery. We bought the bed frame on Saturday and were able to pick it up on Tuesday. Not too shabby in my opinion. Unfortunately, the bed came with more DIY activity then we bargained for. I am used to putting together furniture from stores like IKEA and actually find it easy. This bed however, required the use of a power drill to pre-drill holes to avoid splitting wood. The directions were overly simple for the amount of power tools needed for the job. Good thing we have friends with tools. All of this would be fine as long as expectations were clearly set by a friendly and knowledgeable sales person who wanted to talk about the furniture he/she was trying to sell. Overall we are happy with our purchase. We may or may not return. The store location is incredibly convenient so it is a possibility. read more

I purchased a leather couch and chair 1-1/2 years ago. The dye came off the leather chair. They said they cannot fix it because it is over the year warranty. When I purchase the furniture they talked me into getting an extra protection warranty on it. Come to find out they won't cover it either. I have purchased all my furniture from Steinhafels since we moved here 16 years ago. They just lost a good customer. I won't shop their again. I expect good customer service since I have been a loyal customer. Plus I called for a manger to call me 3 times . They said it was in the system but I never received a call back. read more

Over the years I've spent around $100k at the Madison store, furnishing multiple houses. However, after my recent experience, I will never shop at Steinhafel's again. We purchased a very expensive sectional in 2017. Due to the cost of our investment, we also spent over $1,000 on the Guardsman protection. We filed a claim to have the cushion cores replaced and that went okay. However, one of the cushion cover zippers tore. Guardsman stated they couldn't fix it, so they ordered a new one. Several months later, the new cushion cover had not arrived, so I called Steinhafel's for status. The rep I spoke with said it had arrived and was at the Milwaukee store. He said they would ship it to the Madison store so I could pick it up. Several more weeks passed with no cover so I tried calling the rep back at his extension. I left several messages over the next few weeks. He stopped responding. When I called the store back, they said he provided the wrong information as the cover was not even ordered yet! They said they would expedite it. A few weeks later, the cover came. It was the wrong size. I called Guardsman and explained the issue. They said they understood and re-ordered it. Several additional weeks passed and when it finally came, it was wrong again! I contacted Steinhafels's and was told they would request the new one. I expressed my frustration and suggested they do something in addition to keep me as a customer since this process had almost taken a year to correct at this point. I suggested that they extend my Guardsman protection for a year. They said no. Not only did the rep state they were unwilling to offer any sort of compensation for the delay, she implied this was my fault that the wrong cushion cover was ordered, even though the order was placed by the Guardsman rep who physically inspected the cover at my house! When I replied this was unacceptable, the rep simply stopped replying. I called Steinhafel's and was given "Bill" as someone who could help as he was the manager. Over the next few weeks, I tried contacting Bill through email and phone messages, but he never even responded. Eventually, after I contacted Guardsman again, the correct cover was received. Clearly, my business is not important to Steinhafel's. Because they handled this so poorly, I will never shop there again and when I'm asked for furniture store suggestions, I make sure I respond with how poorly they handled this issue. All they had to do to keep me as a customer was recognize their error and offer me some sort of compensation for the delay - a coupon, anything. Their inability to do that cost them my future business. We have purchased items from Steinhafels in the past and have been very happy with them. So when I wanted a new kitchen table we went there. They had a table and chairs I loved. The set was over $1700.00 so definitely not what I wanted to spend but we bought it. There was supposedly a 1 year warranty in my paperwork. In less than two months the table top was peeling and blistering in several spots. I called Steinhafels and they said they would send out a person to take pictures. Waited 5 days and e-mailed them to ask if there was a review done yet. I was told they were still working on it and would let me know. I called a few days later and they said they would check. Later that day I received an e-mail telling me that it was not a factory defect and that it was not covered under our warranty. We do not have children living at home and we would not do anything to a table that cost so much. We sent them an e-mail twice to ask them what we could have done to cause the peeling and blistering? Of course we would not get a response. The table is now in the basement and we had o purchase another one for the kitchen. We will never shop Steinhafels again. Well I bought twice from here but not again. First time was a sofa, that had some issues after it was delivered. I called the store but no one would ever call me back. I even requested to have the top manager to call me back but still no return call. I ended up buying stock legs elsewhere to replace the broken legs on my new sofa. So time passed and I purchased a new frame and mattress. Just so happened I got to meet the manager of all the Madison stores. All I can say is that is the last time I will shop there. Bought a king sized bed and couch. The bed was delivered the day after I bought it and the financing was great. The bed was set to be delivered at a specific time and it was delivered early - threw my schedule off a bit. I've had the bed for about 6 months and I still love it. I did a ton of research on product and price before I purchased so I knew what I wanted and the price range I needed to stay in. The couch took about 8 weeks to be made which was a bit frustrating. When it was delivered, the same thing happened with the delivery crew - they came fore the scheduled window. Nothing has been spilled on the couch so I don't know how the stain guard protection plan that was purchased works. The couch is still in great condition and I haven't had any problems with it. read more

My wife and I purchased furniture from Steinhafels about 15 months ago. Our $1200 sofa with chaise is deteriorating before our eyes. Of course it is out of Steinhafels' hands, so I tried to give the product a poor review on their site. To sign up on the website to review a product you need a costumer number which I was questioned by their operator as to "why do you want to rate our products?" After about 5 minutes of negotiations, I finally received my number. After I reviewed the product, my poor rating did not show up. So I called back and questioned them. They said that only positive reviews on a product will show up because Steinhafels allows their vendors to review all the product ratings before they are published on the website. Do not buy from this company. You think you are getting a quality product; however, most of their vendors have poor ratings and impossible customer service. read more

I had Chris as a salesman. He was all over me until I said I wanted to check the clearance area. He said he couldn't sell in that area, but I found him there later helping someone else after he tried to drive me to the most expensive sofa. He also mislead me on the mattresses. I was looking for a sofa and a full size mattress and box spring. I made myself clear. He informed me the mattress/boxspring was $649. After I decided I wanted the mattress he was still helping another couple so I asked for help from someone else. This employee informed me the mattress was $649, the boxspring was another $100 and the frame $79. I HAD clearly told him I wanted a mattress and a box spring. I BTW he also said no one makes flippable mattresses anymore. I told him I had just bought one from Biltrite. Biltrite did not charge me for a frame either. Steinhafels delivery fee for A SOFA is $119 whereas Biltrite was $75. Check other places. I believe this place is a furniture scam. read more

I purchased a sectional on Sept 2nd. They said it would be 2 weeks and they would have it in, then they could deliver it...so the estimated date for delivery was 9/16. I called them on 9/16 to ask when I should expect the delivery truck and they said "Oh, I'm glad you called....it will be another 4 weeks"...and this was on top of the 2 weeks I had already waited! I just got an automated email from them and the new date is 10/21. So from the day I first gave Steinhafels my money (9/2)...it is going to take 7 weeks to get it. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. My only guess at this point, is they are actually making this thing from scratch! I warn anyone who needs furniture within 2 months of when they purchased to consider spending their hard earned money somewhere other than Steinhafels. read more

This experience has been the worst ever. It begins purchasing 3 full rooms of furniture: Living room, Dining Room, and Office with full decor. The first partial delivery revealed many issues including a dirty, torn, stained used chair covered in cat hair that was delivered as new: fruit loops fell out of it. A total of 5 items needed to be returned due to very poor quality issues. It has taken missing 3 half days off work, 2 personal trips to the store to pick up items, and over 4 months before completed. I have been compensated $250.00 of in-store merchandise - just bad business. My challenge to you, place the furniture that you sell and deliver to people's homes on your showroom floor and see how much of this junk you sell. About to retire in a few months so the leather couch I bought will be the last sofa I purchase. I was only one of two people in the store on a week day morning but my sales woman was very impatient with me. I was trying the seating of each, size, color of leather, style etc. This was a serious purchase and had also went in with a list of styles I'd looked at online. It's not like there were a dozen customers in the store so the impatience was unwarranted. The biggest issue was their delivery policy. The many guidelines they have are not put forth upfront, you become aware of them when you find them printed on the back of your receipt. Customer service is extremely poor. I will say I love my couch, it looks very elegant in my living room. If I go with the matching chair, will just order on line. read more

Steinhafels delivered a new mattress to my house that smells absolutely revolting, if not deadly. It is off-gassing so badly that we have to have the windows open in our bedroom 100% of the time just to survive the stench in our house, and it's winter in WI, 5 deg F outside. We can't sleep in our own bedroom it's so bad. Heaven only knows what the gasses are and how carcinogenic they are. Actually Google knows. Urethane foam off-gasses dangerous carcinogens as it turns out. Our entire house smells like we have 5 open cans of enamel paint sitting in our bedroom. Why would you sell products like this at all, much less without warning your customers of what they're in for if they buy a mattress? Of course the answer is, you wouldn't sell any $3,000 foam mattresses if you told your customers the truth. Now our old mattress is gone (hauled away by Steinhafels) and we only have this deadly fuming mattress. Do your homework first, unlike me, and learn what Steinhafels doesn't want you to learn. Oh, well....he just bold face lied to my face five years ago (March 13th, 2012 to be exact). Sure, the day I was there..and up until yesterday, I probably would have rated you four or five stars! But today - today I found out that darling Victor, probably for the sake of an extra pretty sale...promised me that if we did not use our warranty on our brand new couch in the next five years, we could call in - and that amount would be refunded! Well, that sounded great! No catch....I use it keep my brand new TWO THOUSAND DOLLAR couch in tact, or no harm no foul - you give me my money back. Great! I will take it....people like me, we keep incredibly detailed notes, and we do not forget. I've had this crap on my calendar for five years now, and was really looking forward to the extra $200 back in my pocket! Today I called...and got the rundown on how I would be getting my COURTESY GIFT CERTIFICATE for that amount, to their store. Seriously, I mean seriously?!? A gift certificate....oh, so I can come in and spend more money. I GET IT. Except, you never told me that....and I was very, very clear about what I was expecting back. I don't make a ton of money, so I like to really keep track of where it's going, and I never, ever appreciate being duped. Victor and his less-than-morale sales tactics aside....Steinhafels customer service could have easily fixed his error. I spent over $2400 in your store and someday, intend to do it again (just not yet) - why not give me back a measly $200? I'm sure you can guess what their answer was, though...seriously foolish. It's so foolish I'm finding myself literally LOL'ing, because they just lost a repeat customer. That's how you have a 'FOR LEASE' sign up in your building, in only a matter of years, and I can see by the other reviews on here you're doing a real bang up job and you're well on your way! Horrible customer service! Horrible is putting gently. Ordered a couch on February 8, 2020 as a special order. Was told 6 to 8 weeks. By mid March had not heard a thing. Then COVID happened. After 4 phones over 4 months not one person could tell me where my order was on the process. They had no connection to the manufacturer. Not once did my sales person call me to connect. She was glad to take my money on February 8 nd then no contact since. No flexibility with their return policy during a pandemic. Couldnt get my money back. I had to track my order and call myself to get scheduled for delivery when my order was final available. Delivery scheduled today as I write this. It is after 2 30 PM and no arrival yet. Track delivery on their website doesnt work as advertised. For the money I spent at this store I expected some sort of customer service. I will not recommend this company to anyone. Sad experience. Saleswoman and customer service misrepresenting sold items. After bringing it to steinhafels customer service over 10 times and many weeks we still have no resolve. Finally after submitting a review I received a call from a "manager" who promised to follow up as the many phone calls I placed prior, however failed to do so. If you want to spend $5,000 and feel terrible about it, I highly recommend steinhafels. If you want to be ignored and lied to during and after the sale this is the place for you to shop!
