Steak and Shake... not what they used to be years ago. But will still go occasionally. I was in the mood for a couple of chili dogs (grew up eating those at Sonic, but was too lazy to drive today). Walked in... no one to seat you like they used to do... and they have new electronic kiosks for ordering. Easy to use and pay, and now if there is a mistake on the order, it was either you or the kitchen, since no one else is involved in the ordering. Ordered a SteakFrank (with chili) combo and an extra SteakFrank with chili (for some reason, SteakFrank always makes me think of Young Frankenstien, please don't ask why!) I like the fries... they are always good and consistent. The chili? Meh... not that great. The dogs... sure, a-ok.. they are dogs, and the buns are well toasted. Hard to mess these up, right? Pretty messy, about par for chili dogs. They are ok.. Service (behind the counter) was great... no issues, helpful. Mens bathroom was out of paper towels (have to wash your hand after eating chili dogs, right?) and some animal had TRASHED one of the commodes, no details... but why do people do this? Ugh! With the return of real BEEF TALLOW fries, I HAD to try this place out. I had never been prior my entire life. Let me tell you the fries are amazing , and the basic burger i had was great too. I do not eat fast food but once or twice a year and this trip was totally worth it! It was a bit odd to not have a cashier, but I soon figured their system out. Food came out later hot and fresh. If that is actually the case, I will mourn the death of milkshakes today, because what this location gave me was Oreo soup. Now, that might sound okay to you. As a culture, we love putting Oreos in everything. But, I ask you, does soup make that list? Maybe something a Michelin-starred restaurant, like Alinea, could pull off, but certainly not S'nS. The story continues, my friends. My husband and I had just spent the entire weekend moving into a new apartment. Around midnight, we decided we deserved a delicious treat. We pulled up to the drive thru and ordered two milkshakes, no cherries. We hate them. To skip to the ending, there were cherries in our "milkshakes," and I said "in," not "on," because the "milkshakes" were so soupy that the cherries instantly plummeted to the bottom to become soggy, bloody red, unwelcome surprises. To make matters worse, the cashier said five words to us: "$8.45," and "Here you go." No greeting, nothing. He wiped off our cups perfunctorily with a rag. When I grabbed them, they still had soup dripping down the sides. This location has low reviews, but I thought the milkshakes were a safe bet. Turns out, nothing is safe to order here. One of the worst Steak 'n Shake's I've ever been to. My husband and I walked in around 10pm, 4 tables were occupied with one finished and ready to leave. We should have turned around as soon as we saw the 4 or so waiters chatting away behind the service area where drinks are prepared and multiple tables covered with dirty dishes. Our waitress, Jessica M. brought us to our seat and barely acknowledged our existence after that except to bring our food. She didn't even ask us if we wanted drinks. We were basically ready to order after 1 minute and waited for someone to ask us what we wanted to drink. The lead server came and asked if we had been helped with our drinks, I said no. She then had another waiter help us who asked us again if we had been helped, Jessica M, stopped him and said I got it. She came by with lukewarm water and asked us if we were ready to order. We did. Every action she took from her vacant expression to her walk seemed to be made under extraordinary effort. Maybe she was in some type of physical pain -- if that was the case she really should have called out, she wasn't doing anyone any favors. After we ordered, I could see the state of the back -- dirty dishes and cups piled high...I doubt two people in 2 hours could catch up to the amount of dirty dishes they had. We could hear the waiters chatting about everything from who called out - apparently one girl left because she was "on her period" another waiter said, that's not an excuse to call out. As riveting as that story was it would have been nice not to hear it while waiting for our food. We had ordered a milkshake and when Jessica bought it out she bought it in a togo cup with two straws and two spoons...ooook. My husband asked her why she did that when the other three tables around us had their milkshakes in cups...she said, "We're not doing cups right now" and walked away. I was ready to get up after that. I'm not sure what her issue with us was considering she barely looked at our direction When our food came, she said she would bring us a spoon for the beans and never came back. We left the beans and never touched them. No one ever came by to offer a spoon and we didn't ask. She didn't even come by with our receipt. Sadly, she rang us out if not we would have told the lead server about our experience - there was no manager in sight. We got up, paid and left. We immediately called corporate in the parking lot. The next morning the General Manager, Sal called and said none of that should have happened. They never put the milkshake in a togo cup for dine in unless requested and they were not short staffed yesterday. The restaurant is actually OVER hours for all the employees lol. I do at least appreciate the General Manager's honesty. While his offer to comp our food is appreciated...I don't think I would ever trust that they would not spit in anything we order, especially if we roll up through drive through and say, "Sal said this is free" lol. read more

Complete Trash - Rewards Are A Joke! I had an offer for a free specialty shake. I went to redeem in the drive-thru and at the window I hit the button to redeem on the app. It then initiated a 60 sec countdown. It tells you to make sure you're at the store; it doesn't tell you about the countdown at all. The person in the drive-thru wasn't all that responsive and when he finally realized what was happening, more than 30 seconds had already passed. I took a screenshot but time expired. I came here with sort of high expectations since this place is known for its burgers and fries. I left here disappointed. I ordered the Guacamole Single Steakburger with a side of Fries and a Large Coke Soda Drink. The burger itself is extremely non-filling especially if you are coming here hungry. It was very small and it was as if I was just eating a piece of bread with a smack full of guacamole. I could not taste anything else. It was that overpowering. The fries were just any other typical fries that you could order at McDonald's, but McDonald's fries are better. Overall, this place is only good as a quick snack. This is the most incompetent Steak 'n Shake crew ever. Especially on the weekends. They can't get orders right. I crave a burger once a month when I'm low in iron. I get the same burger from Steak N Shake during this time of month: a single with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mustard, add portobellos. I usually get my burger during the week via drive thru...because I really can't get myself together during this particular day of the month. For some odd reason all the times I've come on the weekend my order was wrong one way or the other. Today is a Sunday and I have accompanying cramps to go along with my low iron weakness, so I sent Mel to get my burger. I made sure to text him my order. He comes home instead with a burger with 2 parties, cheese, portobello mushrooms and my arch enemy of all foods, MAYONNAISE! I'm immediately pissed off, check the receipt, which stated all the correct condiments. Mel goes back to get the right order and I called and explain that he'd be coming in, so please have the right order ready for him because he's missing Sunday football. The girl I spoke to even got her manager, Joe on the line and I explained and he said Mel should ask for him and he'll give him a refund. I even explained how Mel looked and Joe said he'd look out for him. Mel gets there and my burger is already ready for him. He comes home, I open the burger and it's a single with cheese with lettuce and tomato. No mustard, pickle or portobello. So now I'm pissed. I'm in the need to take Tylenol and don't want to do it on an empty stomach and I look like crap because I'd been lying in bed in pain. I call and ask for Joe and the lady on the phone asks if she can ask why and I immediately go off about how this is the 2nd time they gave my husband the wrong burger and now I have to drive down myself sick and low in iron because my husband can't miss any more football! The lady said she was the one who took my husband's order and proceeds to ask me more questions about what was wrong with the burgers. Okay, so now I'm hangry and she's in my path. I give her the right order and she asks what was wrong and I yelled "he paid for portobellos!" I also told her that Joe said he'd give my husband a refund and he didn't. She proceeds to tell me I can come and pick up the correct burger or get a refund but now both. So, after driving round trip 3 times we get no refund or even a coupon?! Really!? So I threw on a t shirt and shorts and drove angrily over to Steak and Shake and walked in with a frown and the bag of incorrect order. I locked eyes with the lady who I was in the phone with last and her eyes were so big looking at me. She said "ma'am are you the..." And I cut her off and said, "yes I'm here to pick up the third burger that you all messed up twice before." A kid brings the bag from the back and opens the burger in front of me to make sure it was right and I said, "yes it's finally right." The lady handed me the bag and said, "we're really sorry." I snatched the bag and said thank you for finally getting it right. I almost (and I really mean almost) feel bad that that lady got in the path of my wrath, but you can't mess with a woman with cramps. In the end the weekend crew at this Steak n Shake is incompetent. When they finally realized that they forgot us they were apologetic and said they were waiting on fresh French fries. When the food finally came the French fries and onion rings were stone cold. We should have left and gone somewhere else but almost everything decent was closed. We got tired of waiting so we just seated ourselves. I had a terrible experience today. I ordered their new white truffle sandwich. Luckily, I cut it in half first, as it allowed me to discover the long, thick hair inside the cheese, with only one bite. They brought me out a new sandwich and to be fair, I should have just left then, because I couldn't stop thinking about the hair, nor could my wife or kids. So I really didn't enjoy my sandwich. The waitress said the manager would come speak to me, but they never did. They did give me a 5 dollar and 30 something cent discount, but I really wanted to speak to someone. To me, Steak N Shake, as an organization, has never struck me as a very classy or nice organization. At the very least, when I walk into an establishment to eat there is one thing that is a must - it has to be clean. This Steak N Shake is the dirtiest restaurant I've ever seen in my entire life. You walk through the door and the white floors are very gray, there is food all over all of the tables, food in the chairs, and the bathrooms are disgusting. I'm truly surprised I didn't see any roaches crawling around in there. The only reason this place is earning a 2 star rating from me is because it is always open. This is convenient for those late night trips home that many college students regularly take. This gives me at least one other option as to where I can eat after 3 A.M. Other than that, if you took away their 24 hour availability, this restaurant would be a 1 star for sure. The staff aren't groomed, they look dirty, and very unprofessional. On top of that, they are very rude and they mess up orders on a regular basis. At the end of the day, don't eat here unless you are truly hungry and can't wait until you get home. If you do eat here then go through the drive-thru; the chances a roach will crawl on you in your car are a lot lower than they will be if you sat down at a booth inside this Steak N Shake. read more
