My daughter and I were visiting for the first time to Grand Rapids. We stopped in for lunch. We must have looked like tourists. The manger came up, told us the favorites, and helped us order. She brought he food our to us and stayed to find out where we were from, why we were there etc. The orange cream shake was the largest shake I had ever seen, and delicious. We ordered and had to wait half an hour while people who came in after us were getting their food. When we went up to ask about our food it looked like they only started cooking it after we told them. When we finally got our food it was completely wrong and had no sauces or drinks when we ordered several. Plus my butter burger was drenched in half-melted butter. read more

The new "no customer service" system is terrible. No instructions on how it works, food comes out incorrect, cold, or not at all. No one is around to help. Everyone is in the kitchen. Decided to pull into a "car hop" spot and order off the app. We got the original double n cheese steakburger, bacon n cheese double steakburger, a butterfinger shake, and a banana shake. The order came out in no time. Probably faster than if I stayed in line. Everything we ordered was done right. My triple cheeseburger was good. But the meat was not grilled well like it usually is. We usually go to the one on 28th street but they are closed. It doesn't taste as good as when I get it fresh but the food came out fast and the French fries were crunchy. I like their really skinny fries, I ate my mom's too. Mmmmm I can already taste the cheesy goodness of Steak'n'Shake's cheese fries as I write this review strictly from memory. And to think, I wasn't going to order the fries with cheese? What was I thinking?! Me and my Californian ways. Silly girl! When in Michigan, do as the Michiganians do....Steak'n'Shake! Although, I gave this joint 4 stars...it definitely was not for their shakes. Stop giving me that nasty look! It was my fault, I ordered a shake flavor I wouldn't usually get otherwise. For some reason I thought that since the Bananaberry was their popular shake that I'd like it too. But I was far wrong. Honestly, I like good ol' vanilla shakes. (I think it's my own personal ode to Mrs. Mia Wallace's $5 shake....) So, I had high expectations for the Bananaberry shake. The dead give away should've been the highly pigmented pink and yellow shake. The red flag in my mind told me, artificial color=artificial flavor. And I was right. It tasted like it came right out of a bottle. It did not taste all that fabulous. A side note though: my bf's Hershey's chocolate shake was effin' awesome! So, there is hope out there for their shakes. I just made a poor choice. The cheeseburger was delicious. I felt a little cheated since I only got a single. I would definitely suggest getting a bigger burger for more flavor. But, I had to admit to myself, I could only handle the itty bitty burger if I were to try and tackle the shake and the fries all in one sitting. Gluttony can only go so far! So, the burgers are awesome: 1 star. The cheese fries, extra awesome with a side of awesomeness: 2 stars. There were two cars in the drive through. Inside dining was not an option due to Covid so, literally 2 cars worth of customers. We waited FOREVER For the car in front of us to get their food. Lots of conversing and fist bumping going on between the employee and customer. I'm sure they got their food cooked up fresh and that's what took so long. I've stopped in here multiple times in the past few years. Bottom line, I love the food, hate the service! Service is awful here, period! Example: walked in tonight and stood at the "please wait to be seated" sign while three servers just looked at us for minutes. When someone finally did come over they gave us two menus (five of us), sat us, and walked away. When the waitress did come, we had to ask for the kids menus. We continued to sit... and sit... and sit. When she came to take our order, half of the stuff we ordered off the kids menu, she said they no longer are willing to do (cheese fries and side by side shakes). Thankfully, tonight, we didn't have to wait too long for the food (dining room only a third full). Be prepared to wait forever to get your food here. In my experience, most of the times we have come, the food takes 25 minutes plus, once ordered, to make it to the table. Once we had our food (less the cheese fries and the shakes we wanted) we were happy. Also, side note, pick a gas station, any gas station... The drive thru speaker here has been broken for years. Good luck ordering because they will have to ask you to repeat yourself 15 times until you're screaming at the menu like an insane person. The amount of business they've probably lost from that frustration is probably far, far beyond what it would cost to fix it. We were forgotten about many times, water was never filled, we were never checked on. It was a slight turn-off when our checks came when the food did and you could hear the servers trash talking their tables in the beverage area.
