Came on a Tuesday after golf 745 normally places are open in the area. Waitress came out very rude. "We have not had people all day. Kitchen is going to close. You need to order right away." We put in a couple appetizers in hopes to hold over the kitchen till the rest of our team came, after they came the food was subpar or below at best. I got a French dip, the pictures will show it was flat topped burnt to a crisp and not good. I will not be going back unless something changes here and it's sad with how cool the inside is, and being one of the oldest bars around that the service is terrible and the food was terrible. The place comes off as a dive bar. The food is mediocre at best. I ordered the olive burger, no pink. It came out pink and the olive burger sauce was just a glob of mayo with a few cut up olives. My wife had fish and chips that looked like the fish came out of a box Gordon Foods. I expected more from a Gilmore group restaurant. I am also not a fan of the wage and benefit recovery fee. I had higher hopes and expectations for a Gilmore Collection restaurant. My wife and I tried this place last night (11/7). After sitting at a table, a bartender came over and took our drink order. We'd never been here before, so we weren't sure what the protocol was for ordering food. A customer was standing near the bar holding a menu, and there didn't appear to be any servers around, so the bartenders were helping the bar and waiting tables. I approached the bar to ask about ordering food, and was told "I'll be right over, you'll need to wait a minute". Now this place was not super busy, there were 2 couples in 2 separate spots at the bar, and 3 tables not including us. There were additional tables around the corner, but I didn't see how many. My wife tried to order a Margherita pizza, only to be told they didn't have one. We were given a paper menu, which had a "build your own type of pizza" option, with literally all the ingredients to build a Margherita pizza.... ?? So she ended up getting nachos, and I got the mushroom Swiss burger. The food was not worth the money. For the amount they charge, I can go to numerous other places for far better quality. The burger wasn't seasoned, and tasted like a frozen patty out of a box. I asked for fries twice, and still ended up with chips. The chips in the nachos were super stale, and it was appetizing to look at or eat. About halfway through dinner, we noticed what looked like a turd on the floor on the other side of the chair near the pool table. We had a in-depth discussion as to whether it was a cat turd (which meant a possible mice problem) or a rat turd (which is worse). We pointed it out to the bartender as we left, and he was horrified. After cleaning it up with a broom and dustpan, he told us that "the owner's son [has] been painting the outside, and sometimes he brings his dog". I could understand if it was a service animal and it had an accident, but allowing the owner's son to bring Fido into a place of business, where they serve food no less, is disgusting. At least do a quick walk around to make sure there were no oopsies. Needless to say, first impressions being what they were, we won't be back. I'm disappointed in the Gilmore Collection, as I like alot of their other restaurants. But this one is a unanimous vote as a "never again". read more

You know what? I can dig this place and so should everyone else. It's very divey, very dated, and it's got a decent menu of bar food. What else do you expect for the oldest bar in Grand Rapids. Some friends and I went here last weekend and it was their first time, my first time in a while. Every time I've been here, their craft beer selection has been on-point. The regular live music adds a nice touch, in addition to the old-school velvet textured wall paper. That's about it. Check it out if you haven't already. read more

A great place with a fabulous history. Food is beyond belief at very reasonable prices. Cozy, not snobby. Friendly staff. And above-average pour on mixed beverages. Daily specials on beer, wine, and well drinks. The allure of this place is that it's an old, dirty, haunted azz, dive bar. But if you can't serve up some ghosts, Nick Finks', then at least provide some service to those who visit. I say this in response to the disappointment I have with Nick Fink's weekend's Haunted Halloween event. I know I gave this place a 5 star rating before, but after this weekend, I'm not interested in coming back any time soon. This Haunted Halloween Tour is supposed to be their big event of the year, since after all, the bar is known to be the oldest, and one of the most haunted place in Grand Rapids. The Haunted Halloween event was described on their Facebook page as being a real life ghost tour with Grand Rapids' paranormal ghost hunting team. Their page said that tickets were not needed for the tour, although after getting there to find mass chaos, I would've happily paid in advance to secure my group a tour. And when I say I got there on time for ticket, I literally got there right at 8pm, when the event started. After asking several other patrons where to go for tickets (because the bar tender didn't know), I was funneled into a claustrophobic side band/stage area where I was apparently supposed to push my way through the cramped tables to get a ticket. While a super loud band played. And people were drunk. And there was other people pushing to get to the front too. When I finally made my way to the stage, I was told the tickets were already gone, and they would not be offering any other tours that night. My annoyance grew ten-fold when I overheard a lady shout to her friends "Good thing we called ahead for tickets- they are all out now!" Ohhhh- okaaaaaaaaaaay, so I could've called and reserved tickets but you just didn't say that on your event page, and now I made my way across town for this poorly organized event that I can't even get into. Nice. Because that's my favorite thing to do on Saturday night. We stayed for about an hour... that is, after we bused our own table for a place to sit and we got our own beers at the bar. Although we had all planned in eating here, the only contact we had with a staff member on the floor was when they yelled "move" to let us know they were coming thru to other tables. But otherwise, no acknowledge of our group of 6. Sorry ghosts- we'll have to catch you some other way, I guess. read more

Went on a Saturday afternoon. The table we sat at was filthy, but we just assumed someone had just left and there hadn't been time to clean it. When the waitress came and started putting out our silverware, we had to ask her to please wipe off the crumbs and food that was still on the table. I was thinking of getting a burger and was disappointed that they have only ONE kind, and it has 1/2 lb of beef on it. Since I didn't feel like eating myself into oblivion, I was left with a choice between pizza or Mexican food. I ordered some enchiladas, but after waiting 45 minutes for food to show up, I cancelled the order and left. When I asked the waitress to cancel our food because it had been 45 minutes, she just said "Yeah." Brought the check, no apology, just indifference. We had never been to Nick Finks and decided to try since it is a Gilmore restaurant and we have never had a bad Gilmore experience. I am a fan of Gilmore Collection, but they seemed to miss the boat (or carriage)on this one. Yes Finks has real silverware now, but still paper plates. The menu is what really confuses me about this being a Gilmore resteraunt / pub. Appetizer menu is good, lots of simple variety. But the rest, except for ONE burger option, is all Mexican. "Nick Fink's" is not somewhere I would think of going if I was looking for a Tex-Mex dinner. I had the Beef Burrito. It was average. But if I want a good mexiacan meal I will choose a good tex mex restaurant next time. I don't uderstand why they don't do something with the menu like a throwback to the 1900's timeframe which is the theme of the whole place to start with (not Mexican). Keep the existing appetizer menu, keep the burger and throw in some other burger options, chicken? I can't believe this has always been a Mexican Restaurant, look back at the history of the menu and bring back some classic old time inexpensive meals. Server was polite. When I first walked in I got exactly what I expected. Kind of divy, but quaint. Service for dinner was quick and friendly. Food was average to good. I had the 5 cheese grilled cheese which was pretty good , the fries were not. The pizza s order resembled something you can get at a bowling alley. Service is the big kick here. I was somewhat conflicted about how to rate Nick Fink's. I think if there were a half-star option I would have gone 3.5. As far as a fun historic bar it's definitely at least a 4 star. The food is probably best described as average. It's not bad and if all you're looking for is typical bar food, it's fine. If you are looking for better than average food, since this establishment is part of the Gilmore Collection which includes great restaurants like the Blue Water Grill and the Bostwick Lake Inn, then it doesn't measure up. So I guess it depends on your expectations. This place has been around for a long time under various different ownership. My father in law has been coming here since he was in High School and he's in his 60's. It has always claimed to be the oldest bar in Grand Rapids and, apparently, started its life as a coach stop and boarding house back in the horse and buggy days. It was also rumored to be a brothel and a speak-easy back in the day. According to all accounts it hasn't changed a lick for as long as anyone can remember and it definitely maintains its old school dive bar character. I've been here many times, most recently this past Saturday when I was dismayed to see that they have redone the men's room and really cleaned it up. I liked it dingy and sort of run down like it was. It's a great place to come and unwind and have a few drinks. Highly recommended in this regard. It's good for large groups and is within walking distance from the nearby 5/3 minor league baseball park. The bottom line: If you're looking for an "old timey" and historic watering hole to chill out and have a few drinks while enjoying some normal bar food then you won't be disappointed. If your priority is a quality dining experience then you need to keep looking. read more

I love old bars with charm and unique decor... This place is one of the oldest in GR. It used to be a stop for Al Capone I am told and his boys back in the day. You have to check this place out inside. Large faux red and black leather booths and chairs. Some sort of velvet gold wall paper and a kick ass troff in the mens room...Sometimes sporting little ice cubes. They have a great happy hour and get live music on the weekends. And the beer selection is decent, not overwhelming like other places. Gave 4 stars simply because I didn't try a whole lot of menu items. The decor gets five stars though. We have been once before and had a good time. This particular Saturday night was fun again. Great beer on tap and got a perfect table as the band was setting up. We ordered a plate of nachos to share and I was a little disappointed as the chips were really chewy and tough like they were stale? Based on the Yelp reviews, which seemed to be either 'love it or hate it', I decided to give this place a try. We were in the mood for beer & comfort food and Nick Fink's met our expectations. The tap beer choices were just OK (this isn't a tap house brewery), the prices were very reasonable; the burritos were excellent (Tuesday night is buy 1, get 1 half off) and the service was very good. I suppose people do like to go here for the ambience of a local hang out bar (complete with pool table) but it's not a "destination spot" for that special night out - it's a bar! Lower your Disney-like expectations a wee bit and you'll enjoy yourself a lot more. (That's generally good advice for anyone that's wrapped a little too tight around the axle). read more

My husband and I checked out Nick Fink's during a Halloween Party one year. I was Strawberry Shortcake and actually won for Best Costume! Guess it helps I was All Cutesy looking. It was very fun though. I had a drink and they were showing the history of the establishment dating back to 1886 when it was opened but not truly established fully until 1888. At one time, it was an old hotel back in the old days and made into a Bar later. So, there is so much history to this place. I find old places to be the most interesting actually and I absolutely love hearing about all the history of all that has happened or who all has been there through the years to make it was it is. That truly fascinates me! We watched a video and it showed how at night time Spiritual activities go on and they couldn't even allow anyone upstairs because "The Spirits" still linger here. Blue orbs have been caught on film and it brought an aura of eeriness and mystery to the night! It made my husband and I want to take a quick peek upstairs and gave a Halloween Thrill kind of bringing me back to that child I used to be where ghosts and spooks made Halloween so memorable for us. That evening was so much fun and we stayed all night. I am pleased we have such interesting places in our town because it sets us apart and makes Michigan a pretty interesting place to live! read more

I went to happy hour last week and waited at my table in the bar area for over 5 min. with no service. It was not busy yet no one said "I'll be right with you" or "You have to come to the bar for service." Eventually I did go to the bar for my beverage and after I stood by the beer taps, I moved to the end of the bar as no one would wait on me. Just looked at me. Really? What kind of service is that? All they had to do was communicate. Oh, and when their boss from Gilmore came in, then there was more service at the tables. Wow sucks read more

Tried to go twice. This last time there were 10 tables that had trash all over them. we walked around the bar and waited for something to be cleaned off. To me the place just seems like a dirty bar. read more

Good Mexican pizza, but fairly standard... Which is good, unless you know how to be a great chef and totally go over the top. We enjoyed it, but we replaced the olives with jalapeños, and requested salsa on the side, great adjustments I think... and we will definitely be back... We found it helpful to open up to the staff... They were a bit shy. Cool atmosphere and cool place. A moped gang was there... About 20-30 mopeds in the parking lot, mostly Puch. Our water was kept full after we mentioned it. I'm betting the burgers, pizza, and burritos are good... It's all cooked in-house now... Wasn't before, for a little while. :) Our next visit was tonight. We were very pleased with the wings and salad. Things moved a bit slow, but we weren't too upset and enjoyed our opportunity to talk more amongst ourselves. The tossed salad, and wings were very good. read more

This has been our favorite place on the north end for burgers. Unfortunately they have changed their burger and not for the better in our opinion. While the new bun is an improvement the burger itself was along the lines of burger king for quality. Also there were less onion rings and less chips than before. Still a nice glass of wine during happy hour for under $2. We are going to try the burritos the next time as that had been our favorite before the burgers. If they have changed as much we will be searching for a new favorite on the north end. read more

Sorry, Nick Fink's. Not a fan. We came in with a group of people on a Thursday evening. (3/27/14) Service was slow, server mixed up our food; gave my beau my burrito and gave me his...unfortunately he was half done w/the one he was eating before I started eating mine and realized that it was his shredded beef and black bean burrito and he was devouring my all meat burrito. I hate black beans so you lose points for putting that crap in front of me. The couple we sat next to never even got the food they ordered but it appeared on their bill. Nice, eh? Also, they ran out of ground beef for tacos, nachos, burritos, etc around 6:30. We got their around 8. You lose more points for running out of a menu staple. Once we were done we had to wait forever for the server to bring our bill so we could leave. Once you bring me a to-go box feel free to bring my bill at the same time...I'm obviously done and have no desire to sit around for another 45 minutes. We won't be back. read more
