I paid a $10,000 retainer to begin working with the firm. During the first couple of weeks, they repeatedly misspelled my name and there seemed to be confusion internally about who was responsible for different parts of my case. I had to follow up multiple times just to get basic things moving. Communication throughout the process was frustrating. Different members of the team appeared to have different understandings of what was happening in my case, and I often felt like I had to repeat information several times. I kept extremely organized documentation and provided everything they asked for, but progress still felt slow and disorganized. Another issue was how communication was handled from a billing standpoint. Many emails came back filled with legal jargon that was difficult to understand, which meant I had to reply asking for clarification. Each of those back-and-forth responses was billed time. When we eventually went to court, I was disappointed with how the hearing went and how unprepared my attorney appeared. Afterward I was told the outcome wasn't what they expected. That particular process alone cost around $6,000. By the time everything was finished, about $20,000 had been billed and my situation was actually worse than when I started. My advice to anyone considering this firm would be to ask very detailed questions about communication, preparation, and expected costs before signing a retainer.

By the end of the 2 hour call, the new lawyer then gave me another estimate to finish the project that was way higher than the initial quote but I feel obligated to continue with them because of the 2 hour ($600+) sunk cost. What was more unacceptable was that the lawyer's response was not timely. Sometimes she didn't respond for 4 or 5 days after multiple follow up emails. And she claimed that she didn't receive the final signed document from the opposing lawyer due to email server issue (which I received through regular consumer Gmail account). I am not sure if she is telling the truth. If she is, I wouldn't want to work with a firm that has unstable email servers that may miss important legal emails.

We discussed a strategy, cost involved and documentation I would need to send over to support our complaint. We filed through the court to secure our complaint and started by making a claim against the contractor's bond. Several others also filed against the bond which at the time, had limited bond insurance as required by the state at the time. It was a long process establishing who gets the bond money and/or how it would be split between the parties. The Gourley Law Group team was exceptional in negotiating our position and securing us the full amount of the bond. Although not enough to cover our full loss, the cost to proceed further would not be in our best interest since the contractor filed bankruptcy and the cost to pursue this further would require additional cost, we were not willing to spend. Craig offered to reduce our cost of his time so that our expense to recover the bond amount was limited. We found this to be highly acceptable and appreciated.
