I just got a call from Chris. He's the captain of the boat and said that be recently purchased SF Scuba from Adam. That being said we talked about my hesitation to post the review, but was talked to by others to post my honest review as I had a major safety concern. Anyhow, after a somewhat decent chat Chris then says you know I was on that boat that day and this didn't happen. I told him I was on the surface for 5-10 minutes but it felt like an hour. He said he was never more than 500 yard away and saw me at all times. Why did an other boat stop? Then he said this is how drift dives run. I reminded him that the whole group was dropped at the 2nd location and re-iterated that they would " be there" and for me to "follow the flag up" if there was an issue. Well, I did..they weren't there and then I reminded Chris that after they picked up the rest of the group then we went and picked up ADAM who was dropped elsewhere AFTER they dropped us. This is where Chris lost his mind, started yelling and I yelled back and eventually hung up on him. He's trash, Adam at least is a good guy but Chris is a piece of garbage. Funny thing - he was running a charter but yapping away with me from the bridge the whole time just now. Safety first, huh Starfish Scuba? P.s. I was in force e pompano two weeks ago and mentioned I had a bad charter in palm beach, barely say spearfishing and he says "starfish scuba huh". They are notorious for doing that to people he tells me. Awesome. read more

I've been diving in South Florida for some time and while there are a few good operations, none in my opinion are as well run or as fun as Starfish. First of all the boat is always clean which makes arriving and boarding very pleasant. The crew (Adam-owner, Maggie-captain and jason-DM) are all extremely knowledgeable and make diving on Starfish a blast. Starfish has good snacks and lots of water on board. Because the crew are all instructors who know the reefs very well, there is no shortage of great things to see. Whether your spearfishing, lobstering, or just going out for a casual dive they will make sure you have a wonderful time. DO NOT DIVE THIS BOAT IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GEAR Adam Birdwell (owner of starfish scuba) is under the delusion that it's ok to DAMAGE YOUR GEAR and not do anything about it. My Riffe speargun is now damaged beyond use due to the fact it was poorly stowed by a crew member. The gun was caught on a piling and splintered the top of my Riffe E110X (retailing about $700). Adam stated he would make good on the situation by replacing the speargun. It has now been over 6 weeks of getting the "RUN-AROUND" and I regretfully gave Adam the benefit of the doubt given his disposition in our industry for burning bridges with customers & people he does business with. read more

Beware Maggi is a liar and a fraud! First things first if you're looking for a place just to dive this place will do although it's by far not the best in the area. (Check out Dixie Divers they are absolutely amazing.)Now DO NOT take any courses with Maggi! I have seen multiple occasions where she was wrong or didn't know basic PADI procedure. One example was mask clearing, a women was perfectly doing the skill using her thumb to lift the bottom of the mask (this method is also taught by PADI. Maggi told her she's doing it wrong and the lady was starting to get really frustrated. Maggi was already giving the lady a sour face when she told me to practice with her. I was able to teach it to her in 2 minuets by using some encouragement. In general I have not seen Maggi actually teach much, it's more like she demonstrates and expects you to already know. I did my rescue diver with her and after asking her multiple times to submit it to PADI she finally did so almost a year later, did my EFR at the same time but that's still not in. My little brother did his open water with her and has also not received his card. I suspect she pockets the money and never submit info to PADI unless you pester her. At the start of the summer only about me doing my dive master there. First she said we could dive while I work on the elearning then it was so some more till I had finally finished it and had only been in the water twice. First she told me there's only 1 elearning when I finished that she told me about another one. I asked if there was a way to not do it and she said no, all I actually had to do was take a 60 question multiple choice test. I asked her 3 times to email me the pricing, do you think I ever got it? She did say it would be a minimum 1500, plus books and elearning. Where I am interning now they charge 699 plus books, and teach themselves. We agreed at the start that since she had my schedule she would just text me when to be where. In reality I'd text her asking when and shed take up to a week to respond, then say she wasn't there, or schedule for a week later. When I asked if I'd be diving every week she said definitely, I was on the boat once, in the pool 3 times and non of them were for my skills. While at the pool she asked my to get a mask from her car, I go get it, the car wasn't super close by, next she wants defog, it's not in her car, I offer mine and go get it from my car. After all that do you think she said thank you???? I let a student use something because she was unprepared and I didn't even get a thank you. She also sold me a BCD that's slightly to big but I only noticed when it was to late to return These are not all the issues but the most important. She also likes to give me and others an extremely rude sour face for anything even,minor mistakes. It all worked out well for me in the end though i switched to Dixie divers and they offered me a part time job within a week. I've learned so much and I feel the positivity, can do attitude, and helpfulness aligns much better with me than her negativity and bad attitude. The other dive instructors have been shocked at the way she treated me and the way she acts as a PADI professional. read more

We did our Nitrox course with Starfish Scuba prior to a dive to the Castor, and Maggie made the whole experience so simple- she loaned as the DVD to watch at our convenience, then we just found a time that worked for all of our schedules to meet and go over the material. After completing the course, we went on a dive to the Castor. Maggie and Adam made it a really fun day- they were both very prepared and helpful throughout, and the boat was equipped with plenty of water and snacks. This was my first time with Starfish Scuba and I really enjoyed diving with them. I was on the midnight mini-season lobster dive and it was well organized and well stocked with emergency parts and inventory. The service on the dive was great as was the captain and crew. There was plenty of room on the boat and the bow area was nice and roomy. I was really impressed at how focused the Captain was on picking up quickly out of the water afterwards. Very professional and enjoyable experience. I'll definitely dive with them again. read more
