The new display looks inviting and staff still friendly... but for the customer... yes for you and me it's now not the front room style it once was, this is corporately of course as this store is one of many in the refurb schedule and now Starbucks think more of themselves than the customer... Great place to have a business meeting if you're en-route to or from Manchester Airport, or anywhere on the western side of Manchester.

A great little Trafford Centre shop…read more We only discovered it by accident really; it's on the first floor, quite near the escalators and lifts opposite Selfridge's. Our two kids (aged 4 and 5) enjoy the escalators and lifts, so I suppose it was inevitable we would come across Whittards sooner or later! They've been helping us out with birthday presents and Christmas gifts ever since we found them. The range of teas and coffees they sell is huge, but it's their various chocolate beverages we like best They also sell a few mugs and so on, which doesn't really seem to be necessary -- I'd rather they devoted the shelf-space to more yummy coffees, chocolates and teas. The staff are friendly and helpful and despite its small size we'd say it's definitely worth a visit.

All the shop assistants (many!) dressed in uniform black, saying the same lines to every client, LOL, it is Apple like! Where is the time that people just boiled water and had it sift through coffee in a filter on a pot in the kitchen :) There's a coffee corner of course and lots of Nespresso machines in all colors. My soup was quite nice, and I did enjoy the sauce it was in, and it did have a fresh taste to it, despite the time, although it did have some disappointing aspects. The ratio of vegetable to sauce was very poor, and they was so much of it, which made it taste cheap and low quality, I didn't like how they cut the chicken, which made it taste stringy and horrible, and the peas were not very nice too, it would have been nice with a smaller number, but they was so many, it was like I ordered a bowl of peas in a soup like sauce. My soup was nice, but aspects of too much stringy chicken and peas ruined it, when they could have added more potato and celery, which were some of the parts I liked about the soup the most. This store is actually quite nice and a good addition to the trafford centre, they label allergens very well, and easy to see on electronic screens, so I do feel it deserves 3 stars.

I needed to go into Selfridges but I hadn't thought of Pret. Coincidentally I accidentally happened to be the very first customer when Pret opened its first store at Victoria, London half a lifetime ago in July 1986. I was genetically pre disposed to seeking out a tasty lazy lunch that day near 31 years ago too. As I entered Selfridges I was immediately struck by the brightly lit well stocked Pret. As I froze, a friendly voice from behind the counter said 'coffee, sir.?' I declined and immediately targeted the lunches and there it was - a crayfish salad with a half a peeled avocado. My sort of lazy lunch. I got my wife a duck and hoi sin sauce wrap. I went to pay to be greeted by another friendly face. Food bagged up and I used a card that you just touch on a screen so the transaction took seconds - the food was around £8. The verdict great tasty lazy lunches just as good 31 years apart.

In a somewhat unconventional location on a dead end road, opposite a fishmongers, Encounters is somewhere between a locals tearoom and the style of coffee shop run by Ian Beal in Eastenders or Roy Cropper in Corrie. As such, whilst the coffee isn't likely to be brewed from a fair-trade bean personally selected by the owner of the shop, the food and drink on offer is good, honest stuff. In a premises that looks more like someones converted front room than a purpose built venue, and with a little outdoor seating area Encounters offers a location where you can watch (a very limited section of) life going by as you enjoy your drinks and cakes, or a jacket spud if you happen to venture in at lunchtime. With prices always competitive and a nice range of cakes and snack foods on offer as well as a limited 'sit down' menu, Encounters is probably something of a 'middle of the road' offering in Sale's hierarchy of coffee shops (if an overall score were to be given taking into account ambience, quality and price), somewhat behind Enjoy coffee and Nero, and someway above Carls Cuisine!
