Another table has baskets for money, paying (as much or as little as you see fit) and counters so they have a loose estimate of how many people ordered espressos and cappuccinos. This open, exposed, honest business is so novel. There's a level of trust, that people will pay adequately for the services rendered, that's commendable and refreshing. Needless to say, the coffee is excellent and their reputation has grown to make it a busy and popular place. They even offer coffee for sale, should you wish to take some home with you.

The owner who brought this unique cafe to life can often be found there, and the entire staff have a love for high quality coffee. Be aware, the actual location can be a bit hard to find. It is down a corridor/alley that has many small businesses along it which is only for pedestrians/for walking. The cafe consists of a long bar, with a few seats, and the baristas (usually anywhere from 2 - 3) working behind it. Upstairs there are a few small tables that are great for enjoying with a friend or getting a bit of work done. Outside, there are a few tables as well. The drinks are of good quality. One of the baristas told me about how most of Brazil's good quality coffee beans are exported to other countries, so they go through a special coffee bean roaster based out of Sao Paulo(? can't remember exactly) that is known for acquiring high quality beans. They have typical lattes, espresso, and cappuccinos, but also inquire if you are interested in being more adventurous, in some of their more unique drinks (ones created by the cafe). I tried a coconut water with espresso iced drink that was delicious and refreshing. Also they have hibiscus tea which is refreshing on a hot day. They have a number of pastries that are more specific to Brazil, and a small oven in which they warm things fresh. They also have a sourdough toast with butter that an expat recommended (sourdough is not common to Brazil and is an unique offering). Prices are reasonable, with drinks from R$5 - R$10. They do have Wifi. I would recommend this place for the ambiance and the quality of coffee.

This is a nice cafe in Copacabana. It definitely has the most styles of coffee brews I've ever seen in Brazil. You can choose between French Press, Aeropress, Chemex (pour over), filter (via Hario V60), and all of the standard espresso varieties. The wait staff is super helpful and patient, and they are more than happy to explain to you their different roasts available as well as the differences in brewing methods. The only downside to their coffee is that even the French press and the pour over result in exactly a 8-oz serving, so you don't get a whole full French press or Chemex like you get at many cafes in the U.S. I haven't tried everything on their menu, but I personally love the waffles, they're crispy and delicious, and you can choose between a variety of toppings (my favorite is honey & butter). It's a perfect midday snack! With a whimsical colorful atmosphere, the decor is so well thought out that this cafe really almost seems out of place here in Rio. Where many cafes here seem to think of their interior design as an afterthought, here they have made it a priority. With plenty of table space and comfortable chairs, this is an excellent place to come and spend the afternoon working on a project. Since Brazil doesn't really have the same 'coffee shop' culture as the US, I had trouble working from home the first year that I lived here. FINALLY, I found Grão & Cia where they have free wifi, great coffee, nice people and a quiet upstairs to work where you are undistracted. Sometimes I literally work here for 6-8 hours so luckily they have snacks like nuts, cheeses and gluten free breads and granola bars. It is full of artisan snacks and craft beers and great wines. I bought this farofa that is so good! It comes in a fancy glass jar and has rosemary, Brazil nuts, basil and some other spices. I coated a piece of dourado (I think that is Mahi Mahi) with it and baked it and it turned out so yummy! The manager is really helpful. He is always getting new snacks in and has picked up on the types of things I like so every time I go in, he suggests new products. He also speaks English. Though, now I am fluent enough and we speak in Portuguese. The ONLY downfall of this place is that they literally play the same CD of 12 tracks over and over and over and over. In the year that I have gone there, it has NEVER changed. Thus, I bring headphones and play my own music.
