The Long Version: This location is inside the Gare Centrale (Central Station) were the VIA, Amtrak and commuter trains are. We were at the train station dropping off our luggage for the day since we had to check out of our hotel but our train home wasn't until later that afternoon. The hubby is a coffee fiend, so needed his coffee fix, even though he literally just had a coffee when we left the hotel, lol. Anyway, he got this second cup of the day at Second Cup. How fitting, haha. He said it was fine. Better than the Cafe Brossard coffee at the hotel, but nothing remarkable. I had a sip and agreed. Service was courteous and efficient. It shares some of the walkways and passages in Place Bonaventure with other food and drink establishments. For starters, I like Second Cup more than I do Starbucks. It doesn't have as much hype and branding. It seems lower key. However, on this particular visit, the service ran a little more aloof and they weren't crowded. Also, I prefer their selection of desserts. I went in to get something to eat and to do so in the dining area. I settled on a big cup of hot tea and a hefty slice of chocolate cake. While far from nutritionally balanced or healthy, that might have been dinner. However, in Montreal, using transit is always accompanied by walking - how much is up to you - and that can help counter those calories. Second Cup is a Canadian coffeehouse chain. Per the maxim "when in Rome," I try to patronize Canadian establishments when in Canada, be they stand-alone or chain entities. I will only go to Starbucks outside the U.S. if all the stars line up in its favor, so to speak. I've always had good to excellent experiences at Second Cup and, with the dynamic hustle and bustle of Gare Centrale and the Financial District, this is a nice store in which to sit, eat and drink, people watch (which never disappoints in Montreal), and do some laptop or "to do list" time.

The location is a bit hard to find but it's really nice! The lighting didn't make me feel very productive though, it's more chill for a coffee with friends. I don't think I'd get much studying done here. The good seating is most likely to be taken if you don't show up early, and they don't have outlets everywhere. I do want to visit again to get some food though, they have a lunch menu but I arrived too late to try it and I didn't want pastries.

What's much more challenging is when, in this case, a cafe competes against a memory. The last time I was in Montreal was 14 years ago. I was a relatively newly-minted teenager then. I was on a family trip, and someone in our group recommended "Hot Chocolate Cold" from a Second Cup Cafe. I loved it so much back then that I wanted a second cup (pun not intended). Though mom said "no," and that was that. Though I didn't yet have a Yelp page, I was already a foodie with the corresponding memory! That delicious thing was seared in my memory, and I knew I would definitely be going for it again if I was ever in proximity. I was in Montreal, and it was time. The first sips were terrific, of course. Though the subsequent ones felt a size too small. If you had me try to name something: it was a little more icy and slightly less sweet than I recall. It could be the recipe, my taste, or just a memory sweetened by time. Perhaps it wasn't something designed to be drunk immediately, but rather something to take time with. The little blobs of icy crystals needed some work to consume. It did have good hot chocolate flavors and wasn't overly sweet. The location was bright and inviting, and the service was polite and efficient.
