I've been to Urban Churn before. There were no brownies. There was no cake. There was no pie. WHAT WAS I MISSING?! Turns out Urban Churn has multiple locations across Central PA, and the Louise Drive location in Mechanicsburg gives you the magical combination I'd apparently been searching for: Urban Churn ice cream AND baked goods under the same roof. On a late September Friday night date night, I found myself in need of dessert after dinner. Then I discovered Urban Churn Bakery and Cafe was approximately five minutes away. Serendipitous! I arrived around 5:30 p.m. on a Friday evening and found the place nearly empty. Apparently late September isn't prime ice cream season for everyone, but that worked beautifully for me because I had plenty of time and space to contemplate the very important decision ahead of me. And then I saw it. THE DISCOUNTED BAKED GOODS SHELF. Listen, I'm a sucker for a good deal under normal circumstances. Put a 50% off sticker on a baked good and suddenly Responsible Adult Me and Dessert Me are united behind a common cause. I spotted a beautiful walnut-topped brownie and immediately started developing a plan. I carried my discounted treasure to the counter and asked the woman working if I could use it as the base for an ice cream creation. "Absolutely!" OH, WE'RE DOING THIS! Even better, she offered to warm the brownie in the microwave before we started building my masterpiece. YES, PLEASE! Together, we created exactly the dessert I'd been imagining when those Urban Churn ads first caught my attention: a warm walnut brownie topped with Scotchmallow ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate syrup and caramel syrup. For the unfamiliar, Scotchmallow is buttery caramel ice cream with honey marshmallow sauce, fudge and chocolate nibs. When she finished building it, the thing was BEAUTIFUL! My approximately $11 dessert and I headed outside to the patio, where the late September weather was still perfect for eating ice cream. I sat down, dug my spoon through the ice cream and into that warm brownie underneath and immediately started smiling. OH. MY. GOODNESS. This was everything I wanted Friday Night Date Night dessert to be! Rich. Gooey. Warm brownie. Cold, super-sweet ice cream. Chocolate. Caramel. Whipped cream perched on top tying the whole ridiculous creation together. THIS is why baked goods and ice cream belong under the same roof. And honestly, my favorite part was that I wasn't limited to ordering some predetermined brownie sundae. I found a baked good that looked good to me, picked an ice cream flavor that sounded amazing and the woman behind the counter happily helped me turn the two into exactly what I wanted. PRO TIP: Don't overlook the bakery section when you're deciding what to order! Find yourself a brownie, cookie, slice of cake or whatever else catches your attention, then start imagining what scoop of ice cream needs to live on top of it. And apparently, don't sleep on the discounted baked-goods shelf either! Urban Churn makes its craft ice cream in small batches with local Pennsylvania dairy, and having that ice cream alongside an actual bakery opens up a whole new world of dessert possibilities. I'll definitely be keeping this particular Urban Churn location at the front of my mind when I'm craving a sundae because now I understand what those social media posts were trying to tell me.
