This Starbucks was a perfect breakfast for me every morning! A croissant and a short Americano!…read more Lots of seating upstairs. I do need to warn anyone that the Americano is made differently from American Starbucks. Instead of pouring boiling hot water into the espresso, here they steam cold water. The result: a drink that can immediately be enjoyed. It also wasn't nearly as strong (not sure why that was), and this was very much to my liking. I'm planning to mention this method to my local Starbucks in the States. It would save a few burnt tongues. Also, they have a different assortment of pastries, which only makes sense! I overheard another American in line say "same old crap as in the States." First, I wanted to say go elsewhere and the other part of me was my embarrassment of having to be associated with this attitude. Our Starbucks app and Starbucks cards did not work. The barista explained that Starbucks had been sold off in Spain. Didn't fact check that yet, though.

Food and drink offerings are pretty much the same as at locations in the United States. However, our gift card balance in the Starbucks app was not accepted here. So much for this being a global company. There are about a dozen small tables on the covered patio outside, with a balcony view facing the harbor. The view of the water and boardwalk (Rambla de Mar) is quite nice. Smoking on the patio is apparently permitted, as Barcelona seems to have a large smoking population. Upstairs there is indoor seating with lots of regular chairs and armchairs, plus plenty of power outlets. And again a view of the harbor, but through a large glass wall. We asked the barrista for the WiFi password which she printed out on receipt paper, but that password didn't work. Technology is not this place's forte. At least the coffee is predictable here.

The outside seating looks out over the water, and all the chairs were facing that way (not really conducive to talking with each other but for enjoying the view or working). Normally, I would venture out in a foreign city and try some other place besides Starbucks, but I had planned to use my Starbucks phone app. Surprise. It didn't work. (I just assumed since it worked in England, that it would work in Spain too). I even tried my gold card, but the barista said just shook her head no. She was friendly about the situation, as I pulled out my credit card. We were the only ones in line or I would have felt bad. The Wi-Fi worked though, and the coffee tasted like Starbucks. I also had a chocolate croissant that tasted just the same as my home Starbucks!

Costa Coffee felt even more crowded than the huge landmark across the street. Both are packed with tourists. The baristas behind the counter were working their collective culata off and deserve props even though the line was nearly to the door. This just might be the most profitable Costa Coffee on the planet. I got a Chocolate-frosted Cronut and a Cappuccino to enjoy while relaxing on the couches outside looking up at Sagrada de Familia plus the steady stream of pedestrians and bicycles passing by. The coffe was fine. The cronut was ok. Both are worthy of 3 stars, but the location and view raise Costa Coffee to a solid choice whether you're early for your entry time or tired after leaving Sagrada Família.

Living in Barcelona, I am constantly searching for 'THE BEST'' coffee beans for home-made espresso…read more I have purchased from the usual suspects: Nomad, Magnifico, LOT, Animal, Dalston and others. And all were excellent. But... At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal taste, great beans that have been properly roasted, and , of course, freshness. During the last 8 months, I have been purchasing Ethiopian Mocha beans from Tostaderos Bon Mercat and have been very satisfied. The beans are always freshly roasted....I always ask the date! And, for me, it's a great bean for a shot of afternoon espresso or a morning cappuccino or latte. If you've tried 'the usual suspects' and are still searching, you should give Tostaderos Bon Mercat a try.

Like any Starbucks in the EMEA, the menu is pretty much the same. International Starbucks cards from the UK/US are not accepted, and I did find Starbucks in Spain, in general, to be slightly pricey, with drinks costing a bit more than back home in the UK. Despite being right by the Cathedral, this location didn't appear to be too busy or touristy. It was easy to relax on the comfortable seating, and the baristas spoke basic English to take my order and provide decent and fast service. I visited during the summer and tried the Frozen Mango Dragonfruit Refresha, which was ideal for the warm weather. It tasted good. I don't think it's great value for money, and I do think the quality of the milk used is poor, although I did have an issue with the milk for the duration of my time in Spain. 4*
