Montesino is one of our favorite places on Earth. I know the Texas Hill Country better than most,…read moreas I spend so much time traveling throughout the region, and I have the good fortune to visit a lot of private ranches as part of my work. My family (including two toddlers) and I were looking for a place that wasn't too remote where we could get away from city life and the busy-ness that comes with it. This place really hits the mark on all levels - conveniently located, but remote feeling, great accommodations (and the lovely host, Pam), a fantastic swimming hole on the Blanco, lots of great restaurants nearby, etc. There is also an impressive working farm that is always yielding plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. And, Farmer John is always interested in showing kids and sharing the bounty. Highly recommended!

The venue is just beautiful. I enjoyed the view, location, and environment. However, the lady "in…read morecharge" (Pam) is very condescending and passive aggressive. McKenzie was so sweet but following orders she had to rush us to finish our duties. It's in the middle of nowhere and I do not know why they are sticklers to "their ways". There is a huge miscommunication between them two; mixed messages. No kind of accommodations are available. I did not enjoy interacting with them overall as I felt rushed and they just came off as entitled/unprofessional. They speak negatively about people instead or reaching out to them directly. They have a belief of they host "weddings", not "parties/celebrations" and are unaware of cultural differences. Pam is adamant about receiving a list for EVERY single detail such as when the bride/groom is getting ready and when everything happens when they weren't present the entire time to SUPPORT the event. That's the job of the coordinator. For the price overall of the venue/limits and the amenities and accommodations, this place is overpriced.

I scoured the Internet for a cabin/cottage that would be a) under $200 a night for 2 people b) with…read morenearby river access c) that could be booked online and d) had a full kitchen e) had cable TV (shut up, we don't have it at home and it's our vacation!) Jackaroo Ranch cottage was all of these things! It was perfect. There is a Jackaroo Ranch house on the property as well for larger groups but the cottage was exactly what we wanted, very quaint, cozy, and comfortable. The place was well maintained and very well equipped with dishes, pans, utensils, blankets, etc. And the pillows were so nice, we wanted to take them home with us! Temperature was very pleasant when we were there so no need for heating or cooling but there was an AC unit and heaters as well as electric blankets. There were handy notes around to tell us where the dressings for the couch futon were and what to do with our trash. The owner lives just down the road and left her number in case we needed anything (everything was perfect so we never needed it!) We didn't look before we went to the store so we bought some charcoal but it turns out that there was already coal, lighter fluid, and a lighter in a bin under the grill. It was hard to tell from the limited pictures on the website (we booked through All Wimberely Lodging) exactly how close to the river it was but it was indeed very close and just a quick little stroll down there; there was a table and chairs set up down there where we enjoyed our breakfast and it also happens to be right at the bridge that crosses the river so we were able to easily walk across and hike around on the other side. And at night we'd just turn on the christmas lights and hang out on the porch, listening to the river and the frogs and just chill. I wish I was there right now! It's a little bit out of the town center which makes you feel nice and hidden away but it's just like a 7 minute drive into the cute little downtown area. There is a little parking spot for the cottage that is labeled; I wasn't sure where the parking was going to be and thought maybe we'd have to park by the house or something so this was good. The shower is really small which wasn't the best, I don't know how you're supposed to shave your legs in there! The only other very minor thing is that since you're sharing the grounds, there might be some back and forth with the gate; we would have just left it open for easy entry and exit but the people in the house had dogs so they would close it all the time which was just a tiny bit annoying but obviously not that big a deal. Overall, I highly recommend it and hope we get to come back sometime!

This adorable place is right on the river! Updates tomorrow. This place is just fantastic! Comfy bed, very clean room, and just far enough away from town to seem remote. Private access to the river with a cute covered deck. The cottage has a private patio with a patio set. We will definitely be back. At $110 a night, this place can't be beat.

First of all the photos on the website were about 6 years old. The ad said "$107 per night and sleeps 6", which it did but very cramped and not worth $200 per night we were charged on our card after we left. The owner did not even tell us we were going to be charged the $300 extra. Otherwise, we would have gone elsewhere. The cabin was on the owners property. Guests had to walk through the owners yard and then 100 yards through brush to get to the little stream they called the Blanco River. Several of the outdoor chairs were broken. The bathroom did not have ventilation and was not up to code. Toilet seat was broken. The photos and description said there was a firepit. It had been washed away 4 years earlier. Owner seemed nice but charged us over $800 for a 4 night stay. This was not even near a 5 Star Resort. Agent was rude when I called and asked to speak to management to explain our mistake. Cabin was small, old and musty. I will NEVER use this rental company or rent this cabin again.

On the Buffalo Bend property there are two cabins and the owner's house. The El Sol and the La…read moreLuna are about 75 yards apart. Both cabins have identical interiors and exteriors. However, there are two distinctive differences in the cabins. The El Sol cabin is the second cabin on the road and is a little more secluded. The La Luna has a better view. My wife and I stayed in the El Sol cabin because we wanted more seclusion. The owner of the cabins, Melissa, emails perfect directions and you will need these directions. It's not difficult to find the cabins, but if you didn't have the printed directions you wouldn't be able to locate them. When we arrived at the El Sol cabin, Melissa had just finished checking the cabin. Melissa is extremely nice and told us about a storm had hit them two days prior, so the satellite tv and internet weren't working. This didn't bother us since we never turned on the tv and we used our smartphones for the internet. Either way, both utilities were repaired and running by our second day. Both cabins have wooden floors and consist of a living room/kitchen area, one bedroom, and a bathroom. The living/kitchen area has a wood burning fireplace, tv, sofa, chair, refrigerator, stovetop oven, microwave, coffee pot, and dining table. There are window a/c units in the living room area and bedroom. I don't know how well they work since we didn't need them. They also have ceiling fans in the bedroom and living areas. We were able to sleep with the windows open since the cabins sit high enough for a very pleasant breeze. The bedroom has a queen size bed. My wife and I both thought the mattress was too soft for us. We're not big people, but our bodies formed somewhat of a "valley" in the mattress. Some people like this, but we like some firmness to our mattress. This was our only complaint, if you want to call it that since it really didn't affect our sleep. The bedroom also has a chest to store some of your clothes, end tables, and a clock/radio/alarm. The bathroom does have a suitable place for hanging all your clothes. Also in the bathroom there's a nice size step in shower, a sink, and of course, a toilet. There was plenty of hot water and you don't have to wait long to get the water hot enough for a nice shower. The water supply is collected rain water. Both cabins have their own cisterns and the water is filtered. Showers are nice with the soft rain water and much better than city water. Some people might not enjoy the taste of filtered rain water, more so if they're use to their chemical laden city water. :) We didn't have any issues with drinking the water. Outside, the cabins have plenty of trees. The El Sol is a tad more wooded. Both cabins have a gas grill, outdoor table and chairs, fire pit, hammock, and lounging chairs. There are two rocking chairs on the porch of both cabins. Both cabins have working hot tubs. I think I covered everything you need to know about the cabins. For my wife and I, it was nice to sit on the porch and watch the deer and foxes walking around the cabins. If you want to guarantee yourself seeing some deer, just throw some feed corn a few yards from the cabin porch. You can buy a bag of corn at the Ace hardware store or the feed store in town. My wife and I had a very nice, quiet, and relaxing time at Buffalo Bend. I'm sure we'll plan another stay in the near future.

The coffee machine was not clean, has a "descale" alert. The ads show photos of special coffee appliances but no beans??? Apparently you have to specifically ask for them before your stay which they don't tell you in advance. Like coffee is pretty basic at even cheap motels so it's just "ok." Ants were everywhere--on the countertops, dishes, and eventually all over our food. We ended up having to throw away more than $100 worth of meat because it became infested. I sent multiple photos to the management company, and while they did send someone to the property, we were told they could not spray because the ants were around our food. That was exactly why we had requested help in the first place, so the issue was never resolved during our stay. The backyard also did not match the listing photos. A black fence completely blocked the advertised view, the grass was overgrown, and there were spider webs covering the back porch, making the outdoor space uninviting. The most alarming part of our stay happened while we were watching TV in the living room. A scorpion stung my husband. Because he has underlying health issues, we immediately contacted Poison Control and had to closely monitor his symptoms. It was a frightening experience. I notified the management company right away, but they offered no meaningful response or assistance. Overall, the property was not well maintained, and the safety concerns made our stay extremely stressful. What was most disappointing was the lack of concern and effort from the management company to address the problems or make things right. I would not recommend staying here based on our experience.
