My husband and I were looking for something low key to do for our 29th anniversary. We chose the…read moreMansion because it seemed local and we didn't want to drive a lot. We hit the jackpot! There were a few different types of rooms to choose from and we chose the Penthaus 15 because it was on the River. This room is not for tall people (we are not). Choose another room if you're tall! We loved that it's all original buildings from 1800s in the area. Had good plumbing and amazing AC (thank God!) and quite a bit of charm. Please note this is not a bed n breakfast anymore. But The Pantry is a part of the main office and they serve breakfast for reasonable prices. My lox and bagel was amazing and my husband's taco was delicious. Breakfast was a local affair. So many people and everyone was small town friendly. We sat on the porch but there were tables inside and on the back patio. The Texas Pecan Coffee was so good I bought some to bring home. Location of the mansion was perfect! We never even got in our car all weekend!! Shops, live music, bars, parks, river tubing was all within a few blocks. So close that if we needed to cool down (June in TX with no ac in some shops and restaurants) we would just swing back to the room for about 15 mins, cool down, and then keep going. So much live music to enjoy. I see some reviews that complain about music at night but we were not bothered by any of it. We had to strain to hear anything outside our room. The Inn provides earplugs but we didn't use them. We've already promised each other to come back again in the fall when it's a little cooler. And of course we will stay at the Gruene Mansion Inn.

With how high the rates are it should definitely be a B&B still, but i guess high prices are just something that people get away with now! Regardless the room we stayed in was beautiful and clean and had updated renovations. The outside looks rustic but the inside is very comfortable and relaxing. Besides the music that is playing next door, sleep was great. The beds are comfy. We enjoyed rocking in the chairs on the patio watching the people. Plenty of parking during the week for guests. Staff was great and helpful.

Down to visit Texas State with my older daughter we decided we'd get there a day ahead of time and…read morespend the night rather than try to make the 5 hours or so drive in the morning. She likes things that are different most of the time so I thought I'd try a bed and breakfast with her and was able to find the Crystal River Inn, listed as a 3 star hotel on the travel sites. Seemed to be a discount and I found out why later, but everything worked out fine. This place is just a few blocks away from Texas State so location-wise for us was perfect for our tour the next day. Very easy to find and it's also just off the downtown square so right in the thick of things and allowed us to "check" out the area pretty easy. The reason for the discount is that one part of the hotel is being renovated and so only about half the rooms are available. We stayed in the portion they call the Thomas House. Now we got there on a Sunday evening and so no work being done. There is some bustling noise on the street which mostly goes away by sundown. Also some foot traffic as there seems to be students walking back and forth for various retail spots. Very cozy and quaint rooms however with their own bathroom. One of those small town places where you just pick up your key on the table amongst the other keys for expected guests. Open parking in the back and easy in and out. Supposedly there is a ghost there that likes to mess with the temperature but the thermostat was blocked off and it was quite nice throughout the night. Though my daughter is into that we saw no ghosts that either pushed us down the stairs or helped us up them according to legend...LOL... Has a coffee station for the morning which is help yourself. You can hear other people moving around in the other rooms but nothing too terrible at least on this night. We did not need anything but there was a contact number and the innkeeper apparently was on call if necessary. I think a cozy place. Decor was very nostalgic and man the bath water was nice and hot and plentiful! I don't know that I would call it a romantic getaway place as the surroundings aren't idyllic; but it was a great alternative to the regular motels/hotels for not much more. The bed and pillows were worth the extra 20 bucks....LOL.... I think we got the night for $120 and after all those taxes it was about $144. Don't mind staying there if we are out that way again.

This pace is a danger to the disabled, elderly and basically anyone. The backyard is a hazard for tripping because it is so uneven and even has dips. The transition from the front desk to the hallway is loose and it is several inches wide, a huge hazard. The railing on the extremely steep stairs is too wide for someone who is disabled and can't grip it properly. The entrance in the back has broken and uneven bricks, again a huge hazard. She had the nerve to say to me that they looked at the cameras and I was walking perfectly fine which is so untrue, it's shocking. I had to take my shoes off and scan the floor to be able to walk. I reported to my dr and he took a full report. So I did report the incident and she has been caught in a very serious lie.

Parking was so easy just steps from the front door. Our room was very clean. Loved the fireplace a few things that really need to be noted, is how close the hotel is to everything. It is an amazing location. We walk to our dinner reservations. They also serve wine in the lobby in the evening. The breakfast served in the morning was so good! The view from our table of the pool and the river was just beautiful. At breakfast, we all loved the yogurt parfait. It had crushed pineapple and kiwi. They had sausage, biscuits, and gravy, beautiful quiche, Pastries, so many beverage options. Everyone was so impressed. We all very much enjoyed our stay at the Gruene River Inn.

Let me start by saying that when change is made, it should be for the better. This has been a stop…read moreon our travel between family visitations on the I-35 corridor for many years. It always had a welcoming, rustic, hill-country feel to it that matched the surroundings. Our last stay I was really disappointed at the changes that had been made to the decor mostly because they make no sense and did not improve the property in any way. I sincerely hope that the owners did not pay for this decor design. It's pretty awful. (And kind of funny bc it's ALL over the place). What used to be rustic and charming now seems to be modern (gold fixtures, tiled shower, trash cans) asian (black trim, bathroom doors, headboard fabric), kitschy (lasso bedside lamps- that aren't good for reading and don't dim), with a 50's retro flair (the refrigerator and the blue tooth), and modern cowboy art on the walls. Yet, no one thought to include charging ports for electronics! It's so confusing. They pulled out the nice big tub and put in a shower that doesn't have a door and has a shower head with no pressure and no direction to it- so to say it plainly, it's difficult to get clean! Amongst all the changes perhaps fixing the toilet so it doesn't randomly run might have been a good choice. One of the reasons we use to like to stay were the delicious breakfast tacos that were provided. I don't know if they will come back or not as the lobby was under construction, but based on the decor choices my guess is they will make some equally terrible decision regarding the lobby and maybe do away with it all together? Who knows! What it has going for it is that the views are amazing (thankfully they couldn't change that or my guess is they would have)! The bed was comfortable and the towels were top notch. Maybe if you've never been before you won't find it as disturbing but I just had a hard time reconciling the fact that they paid to make the place worse. We might have to find different digs when we're in the area.

I just happened to see something come through my newsfeed over Fb, I bookmarked it, found my schedule open, so headed east to check it out. Emma likes to play in her room... and who doesn't like to play with little spirits?! I didn't know the history of the Magnolia Hotel so was totally clueless walking in the door... Magnolia Hotel has been on Ghost Adventures on Travel Channel. Also, Magnolia Hotel is ~not~ a hotel, it is now a personal residence. To my delight, I was able to hear stories of the old hotel, tales of it's past residents many of which have never left, and how Magnolia Hotel was discovered by the owners. Jim & Erin saved the Magnolia from being demolished... they single handedly have saved a part of Seguin history!... and some haunted history at that! I spent about two hours just hanging out, looking around, and people watching... talked to some interesting people, listening to questions and answers... all very interesting. Did I have an experience? I had something creepy go up the back of my left neck and skull as I was talking to a ghost hunter in the original dining area where the owner was sitting. I also felt some weird things around the house... but something I brushed off at first until I started listening to others talk about it... when you first come up the stairs, it feels really heavy. I originally brushed it off as I just walked up the stairs... but no, go back and you feel it... and everyone was feeling it!!! Emma was playing in her room. One of the guides said just a few minutes earlier, a little girl got scratched. Then someone told her that they saw the door knob in the pink bathroom turn back and forth. The owner, Erin, said this house is more active during the day than at night. Wow! The owners Jim & Erin host a ghost tour in their home on occasion, which books up months in advance. The tour last about 2 hours with in-depth stories which might also include a spiritual reading from the Erin at the end (but only if deceased wish to come forward). Erin has written Haunted New Braunfels, Haunted Seguin, and soon to be released Haunted Magnolia House. All proceeds go towards restoring the Magnolia Hotel. I can not wait to go on their ghost tour!
