So where do I start with Star Nails in Bemidji?! Lets start positively; I had my nails done and they looked nice when I left the store. Thats about all the positiveness I have for this place. I accidentally booked at Star Nails as I'm not from the area. I walk into the store and the vibe is not good, faded ugly paint on the walls (new paint and vibrant colors would go a long way here), no decor except for some really old 1990ish vibe faded pictures of women and their nails. I wasn't impressed with my first step into the door. I asked for DIP nails and they don't have dip??? Like whaa?? What kind of nail salon doesn't have dip powder? I also was SUPER thirsty and needed a water (I'd even pay for it) and she said she has nothing like that. Most average salons have small bottles of water or a can of soda if you ask them (again, I was gonna pay for it!) So, no vibe, no dip, no water. Okay, whatever. I said gel nail polish will be fine. This salon had only 1 tv and it was located on a wall at the back of the store so when you sit at the nail counters, you can't really see the tv - horrible placement. They need more tvs, turn on caption, and place in a spot where people can physically see the tv. You can't play on your phone while getting your nails done so you just stare at the job at hand, right? Lets start with the guy, because he's kind of a piece of work. He comes out and he literally "criticized" EVERYTHING I DID! I could do nothing right in this guys mind. First, this guy shook my fingers and hands and told me to relax throughout the entire manicure. He told me not to look at what he was doing because he said that makes me more tense! Umm, no, this guy made me super tense for some reason because he started criticizing me from the very beginning. Secondly, he put my nails in an acetone bath and I was fidgety, and he told me to "stop, don't fidget, keep nails in the solution" - and I did, I was just bouncing and fidgety with nothing interesting to look at in the store. He seemed very annoyed by me generally and I was extra nice because I didn't want this guy to be an ass to me. He kept bending my fingers and pushing down fingers aggressively because he says I wouldn't relax. "Dude, if you tell me to relax and get aggressive with me, it makes me more nervous so I def won't relax." Third, I didn't get the color I wanted! I picked out a beige that glittered. And I didn't understand why I couldn't pick that specific color. He said something about an under color? The under color was beige. He ended up only putting on the beige color but no glitter?! I was dumbfounded! No explanation, he couldn't talk English very well so I couldn't understand him. I was so disappointed. Fourth, when my nails were curing in the dryer UV light, I always looked to see how deep it went and how far I could put my hands into this. He told me not to look! I didn't want my nails scratching the back of this curing machine and smashing the color all over and making a mess. Don't tell me what to do, dude! There's a method behind my madness; just deal with it. Fifth, this was supposed to be a manicure with gel polish. I didn't even get my manicure. He didn't clip my cuticles or push them back, or get underneath the nails or anything that had to with a manicure. He basically changed the color of my gel polish and I didn't get a massage or anything remotely close to a manicure. Overall, this guy was rude and truly doesn't care about the people walking into the salon. He looked like he HATED being there and he didn't want to work. I will NEVER go back to this establishment to get my nails done...ever. Between the awful aesthetic of the salon and the rudeness of the couple managing this store, it was just a bad experience. Do not come to this place. They use old files and foot scrubbers. I'm almost positive they don't sanitize the utensils. The containers they use to hold all of their utensils were so dirty with build up of scum. The lady was zoning in and out while rubbing my legs. She didn't file my nails or clean underneath them. I don't know if she was high on pills or not but it really looked like it. The owner is just as rude as all of its employees, if not worse. A very incompetent business. I hope no one has the experience I did. I've never felt so disrespected and humiliated in my life. I'll never come here again when I come to visit my family in Bemidji. read more

The staff at Star Nails are friendly, efficient, and do a fine pedicure/manicure at a fair price. It is a good idea to call ahead and make an appointment. Normally, they have 3 technicians working at a time, and they are family. Groups are welcome, walk-ins too, and the staff is honest in telling walk-ins how long the wait will be. I have been going here off and on. Today the man swore at me when I got polish on my skin. He also swore at me when I tried the polish on one of my nails. He hit me a number of times with the life when my fingers would not bend. One nail was not even and asked if he would fix it and he said no so I did and he told me I could just take it home and do it all my self. My nails are very uneven. They do not charge the price that is on the wall. Prices very every time I go there. I will be reporting him tomorrow to the BBB and to the state licensing department. read more

Basic pedicure, nothing fancy. They did a good job on the nail polish and it wasn't too short of a massage etc. the one criticism is they didn't tell me prior to the pedicure that the credit card machine wasn't working, seems a bit crazy they wouldn't say anything before hand. read more

I would give 0 stars if possible. So bad. Must be under new ownership, everything looks used and outdated. My pedicure was maybe 10 min long. No scrubbing or massage, I didn't even get top coat on my nail polish. I won't be back. The staff didn't speak to me at all. Very unimpressed. read more

I have been here many times and they always do an amazing job! I'm not a manicure person, I'm a pedicure person. So I don't have much insight on how they do with hands. Feet however! I always get a French manicure and then a cute design on my big toe. It looks amazing every time! read more

Star Nail in Bemidji is one of the only nail places in town, so you really have no choice on where to go, which is part of the reason the service is less than sub par and less than friendly and poor communication with customers. read more

As a walk-in client I expected to wait. The staff was clear about the wait time and when I returned at that time I got in right away. I get a pedicure about twice a year (normally in the St. Paul area) and the service met my expectations on both quality and price. Can't speak for their service as far as how good they are and quality. But I called to ask a question about a nail that keeps splitting and the man was not willing to take time to help me. I went there on a Thursday early afternoon and there was no one else in the business. I let them know I needed my nails filled. They told me that they had no openings. Thinking they misunderstood me I stated no one else is in here and asked if they could fill my nails now. Her response was no to busy, customers will be here in 30 minutes. I went outside and made some calls in my car for other places to get my nails done at. After 25 minutes I left, as I left I noticed that they still had no customers. Will never go back. read more

Today a friend and I went here to get our nails done. 10-13-21 we were greeted with " you have appointments l?" We said yea and picked our polish. I said down and showed the guy a picture. He immediately said "we don't do that" okay that was fine so I picked the polish that I wanted. It was regular polish not gel. He starts filing my nails and SMACKED my hand because I wasn't holding it how he wanted. He was very very rude. So we get to the polish and he makes me get gel. I told him they didn't have the color I wanted in gel. He said go look on the other wall. So fine, I find the closest color to what I wanted. He moved my stuff over to his wife without even saying anything. So she puts the color on. The green changed to grey under the light and I expressed that I did not like it and I wanted a different color because it had changed to a totally different color. She rudely told me it would cost more because it took a lot of time. So I leave with nails I don't like. She also gave me a dirty look when I didn't tip. I will never ever go back here. Gentleman working was less than pleasant and welcoming when we arrived. Our appt's were for 1pm. A friend and I. We were finished and back in the car by 1:41. 40 min pedicure might be ok, but she did us both separately. So 20 min each. One of the worst pedicures I've ever received. The nail trim wasn't even and so not worth the amount. I've been to the place at the mall before which was better. But overall with a lack of options in this area, people will unfortunately continue to go to star nails. I never will ever again! So disappointing read more

I walked in recently and asked if I could get my old broken acrylics removed and possibly get my nails painted. I didn't expect to get in at that second but I thought at least they'd be nice if they didn't have any slots and offer me a time that week. But no, the man laughed in my face and proceeded to say there was no way I could get in that day. I asked about openings that week and he got very frustrated with me for even trying to make an appointment and proceeded to make me feel like an idiot for even asking. I will never be returning and will not be referencing anyone I know to go there. I have worked in customer service for 9 years and you do not make a customer feel stupid or get angry with them for asking to get services from you. I mean hello, that's your job. Your business is offering this service, so don't be surprised or mad when someone asks to use them. Your job is not to make them feel degraded. My mom and I went here and got our nails done about a week ago. The man working there, who I presume to be the owner was a complete jerk with absolutely no customer service skills. He was visibly annoyed when customers came into the store and the phone rang off the hook the entire time we were there and no one bothered to answer it. The women who worked there were much more friendly, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to make up for the man's terrible attitude. This place left a bad taste in my mouth and I will never go back. Star Nails in Bemidji is the most unprofessional nail salon I've ever experienced. One of the staff members, has a temper issue and isn't affraid to show it in front of customers. I have personally witnesses these tantrums and complete unprofessionalism and I will never go back to this establishment! Every time I've been there, there are only 2 people working and while taking phone calls for appointments one particular technician is quite rude, very curt, and openly uses profanity! My mother and I are very disappointed with the most recent visit there, on this particular visit the same technician took a phone call for an appointment and it got heated very quickly and he hung up on the customer, then proceeded to slam the phone on the table right next to my hand and broke it, then continued mumbling profanity loud enough that everyone could here, then before returning to work on my hands he stood abruptly and stomped off to the restroom and spouted more profanity as he yanked papertowell out of the dispenser so loud that the banging echoed through the room. Everyone was silent and when he returned nobody would speak. He finished my nails but very quickly and carelessly.....we did pay for our services even though I wanted to complain directly to him, however I did not want to provoke another outburst.....but as I said....we will never return! read more

I read the reviews prior to stopping by Star Nail today. While the women who gave me a pedicure did an okay job, I have experienced much better. The owner couldn't be bothered with the customers walking in the door. People received greetings like 'What do you need" or "What do you want" rather than "Welcome, thank you for stopping in - how can we help you today?" My biggest concern was that I did not see any of the tools being sanitized and that's a major health concern. read more

I had gotten my nails done there for my wedding and the polish on my toes was smeared and wiped off on one spot after they had finished and my acrylic nails came off after 1 week. A year had passed so I figured I would try them again so I stopped in one afternoon to get my nails done for my brothers funeral and there were 3 workers doing pedicures and no one even acknoweldged me at the door for a couple minutes, then the guy worker turned and asked what I wanted didnt even get out of his chair, I told him what I was looking for and he was like no one can help you now. I asked how long and got all annoyed and walked over to thier schedule book, stared at it for a few minutes then said just come back later today. I got my nails done with a friend of mine on 10/9/14 for her wedding on 10/11/14. Her nails turned out fine, as did mine for the first few days, but now my nails have started coming off on the sides, and not just one, all of them but two (thumbs) have come undone on one or both sides so I went in this morning (10/15/14) and showed the lady who did my nails what was happening. She said it was normal wear and tear when you work and I just had to get them filled. I ended up leaving feeling very upset and disappointed that she was unwilling to help me. I thought about it on the way home and just couldn't leave it alone, so I called and said I wanted the guy (who did my friend's nails) to look at them and if he agreed with her I would leave and eat my $45 ($50 with tip), and if he didn't I wanted him to fix them. An hour later I was back at Star Nail listening to him tell me the nails coming off was normal because of the curve of certain people's nails and some people pick at them and I needed to come back every two weeks so he could chip off the part that was unglued and fix it while doing the fill. I told him that the curve of my nails hadn't changed since the other times I had acrylic nails and all of those seemed to stay attached just fine and I wasn't a picker so that was irrelevant. He was having none of it and told me to wait a week and come back. I said no, that I didn't want to spend any more money there, and asked if I could at least have some of my money back and he said no. All in all I'm super disappointed in their work and attitudes.
