My husband was a DDS himself with a small practice in Orange County and he was in a bad motorcycle accident in 2020 and has a severe traumatic brain injury. He is half paralyzed, on a tracheostomy and g tube. He is nonverbal. It is quite a feat to get my dear husband to any medical appointment. Dr. Lam and his staff are so loving and kind and patient with John. They block off extra time to get him treated. Dr. Lam and staff go above and beyond a standard dentist office. I'm always treated with kindness and attention when I go there. Dr. Lam is very passionate about his work and the quality of work demonstrates that. Dr. Lam has been my dentist in the past year and just in a year alone I have seen and felt dramatic changes to my teeth and well-being. One thing I would like to highlight is a couple of months ago. Dr. Lam recommended a night guard for my teeth because I would grind them while sleeping. I was very skeptical about it because in all my years with other dentists, it was never recommended to me but I ended up doing it. To give you a quick history about my sleeping pattern I would always breathe through my mouth and would wake up exhausted, with a dried mouth. The first night I wore the night guard for my teeth I realize it was going to be a life changer because I felt well rested and I was breathing through my nose which I cannot remember ever doing while trying to sleep. He was in the process of doing a crown and charging me almost $1500 and umwilling to discuss any new procedures for my bridge Thank you that had gome off and refused to do the crown. I left the office with a prise from him that he eill send x-ray info in my email. After sending rinder texts and email the nasty receptionist never sent me any and it cost me extra $150. So I went to another dental office nearby called Creative Smiles. Very nice modern dental facility. And Dr. Chang answered my questions properly and my crown is done. This office charged me $950. [UPDATE 1: Review #101] 2019 Yelp 100 Challenge (106/100) Our long-term relationship definitely has its benefits, especially for me, because of understanding of temperament, health history, etc. The disadvantage is my embarrassment when I failed to follow orders... after all, it's my teeth & my responsibility. I had terrible dental hygiene during the 1st half of my life, my parents didn't have dental insurance & thought it was unnecessary to see a dentist until we have tooth pain so when I started our relationship with Dr Lam, I was in desperate need for dental health but was too scared. He understood my previous trauma & worked with me. In my 20s, he said I had the teeth of 40+ YO. Over the years, Dr. Lam helped me preserve & maintain what teeth I have left. My recent dental issues involve a previous root canal that had become inflamed due to a soft pocket that can store minuscule pieces of food. I need serious deep cleaning for the infection to heal. I had LDR "Laser Bacteria Reduction" along with a bactericidal rinse, a luring agent that's highly recommended by a renowned periodontist, that creates the best possible tissue/gum heath... the process was completed over 2 days. It's been about a month & I feel great... no shooting nerve pain behind the ear, no inflamed gum, no tooth pain. =) Both my kids (now 9-1/2 & almost 4 YOs) have been patients of Dr. Lam since their toddler years. My daughter loves coming in for her cleaning, probably because of the awesome schwag. Her adult teeth are awkwardly coming in so she may need braces, & Dr. Lam has been regularly checking the progression so that we're not put in braces too early & need a 2nd correction due to timing issues. My sensitive son, who hates all people & things medical, has willingly sat in the chair to get his teeth checked without his supersonic ear-piercing screams, but not quite ready for a teeth cleaning yet. While Star Dental does not specialize in pediatric dentistry, I have seen a lot of children patients through my years. When I had financial difficulty due to job loss, he worked out an affordable payment plan until I was able to acquire dental insurance again. BEWARE OF BAIT AND SWITCH TACTICS FROM THIS PLACE! We went here for an initial consultation for my son's braces. Their quote was about $1,000 cheaper than other dental offices. (I was doing price comparisons with other offices)This place never gave me a paper or proof of costs for treatment, length of time, discounts, etc. unlike all the other dental offices I went to. They only gave a verbal estimate but never put it down in writing. That should've been the first red flag. Understandably, we were overly excited with the cheaper price and closer distance. This place sounded like a winner, but come to find out later on, it wasn't. After doing the initial consultation, the office requested that I pay $250 to get his teeth molded and pictures. That's fine, that's understandable. After coming back to the office once the mold and pictures were completed, the doctor changed his price to $1,000 more than the initial price. How can the price be so far off the initial estimate for a doctor that "claims" he has over 30 years of experience? His final price was not only higher than what he initially quoted, but turns out it's around the same price as other dental offices that I went to. That's fine, but what makes this situation more upsetting is at least with the other dental offices, they were upfront about their prices just with the first initial consultation. This office basically just got my hopes up because I thought we found a good office with a good deal. Sadly no. They showed me the final price which I was told to sign off on. I refused because they expected me to not only pay for the $250, but on top of that the additional$1,000 which came out of nowhere only AFTER the initial work was done. Keep in mind we were told in the initial consultation well before doing any of this that it would be about $1,000 cheaper than other offices. Of course the office manager gets mad, starts arguing, and became extremely rude. She was arguing with me about my insurance plan. I have been thinking for many years to get braces. I first came to Dr. Lam last year when I chipped my front tooth and my regular dentist was out of town. I had a fairly large business presentation the next day and didn't want to show up with a looking sloppy. The receptionist who answered my call was very friendly and was able to get me in to see Dr. Lam on a emergency basis. When I met Dr. Lam, I couldn't help but like him. He's very engaging and is 100% present when he meets with his patients. He fixed my front tooth so well, you couldn't tell that it was chipped. Fast forward to yesterday when my 12 year old son took a nasty slam skateboarding and chipped his front two teeth. Immediately I thought of Dr. Lam and called his office first thing in the morning. Being the day before a holiday, I wasn't sure he would be in. Thankfully, he was in town an once again, his office got us in on an emergency basis. Years ago I was walking around the Wilson Park area and around the strip mall where Dr. Lam's office is. Noticed he is a member of the California Dental Association and local Dental Society. Years ago, I used to work for the Dental Society in Northern California. Anyway, there are standards for membership and I was pleased to see Dr. Lam is a member. My first time here. This place was recommended by a friend. She didn't have insurance, I do; big difference! I went for a cleaning, the girls at the front were nice, and office was clean. The cleaning, I felt, was rushed, not the detailed cleaning I have had at other places. Dr Lam came in, and showed me the x-rays. He said there was something wrong with the root canals and crowns I have had done. To think about re-doing them... I asked him why, but it seemed I couldn't get a straight answer from him. They are over 5 years old, I have no pain or problems with them. I wasn't about to go through all that again without a proper explanation as to why. The one concern I did have, a small hole on a crown from teeth grinding, he didn't address. He said that wasn't his biggest concern... well it was MY concern. He said I needed a deep cleaning, it would be about $300 out of pocket, after insurance. I didn't understand why. They tried to schedule it, but I refused. I was sold a $25 toothpaste, and later saw it on Amazon for $11... Just wasn't happy. Dr. Lam needs to listen to his patient's concerns, also, my gums were hurting/bleeding all day after cleaning. So I am very selective with my dentist. During my first visit, Dr Lam thoroughly went through some issues and problems with my teeth and jaw. Profound Dentistry FINALLY made easy, affordable and most importantly.. bearable. I've always been reluctant to go to the dentist, I dreaded getting my teeth worked on. Before Dr.Lam, I felt previous dentists I've had were rough and didn't really attempt a personal approach to their practice; it really just felt like they wanted me in and out. From what I thought was just a cracked tooth ended up being a lot more than that, which called for a Root Canal. The staff was extremely transparent about the cost of what would be a consultation, and what I'd need to do to go forward with or without further treatment. Dr. Lam is extremely personable, passionate and professional in what he does. Along with his friendly staff, they make an amazing group! When I went in, he showed me exactly what was going on, and I've got to say it was an "ugly" truth.. or tooth as he gave me a first had look at exactly what was happening, and why it called for a root canal. The actual procedure was painless, at times I did have a tiny bit of discomfort but him and his staff do an extremely good job at communication during the process to work with it. Let's start with the Pros : -I got done one of the best cleanings in this place. The hygienist is awesome!!! - The doctor takes his time to explain you how you could improve your dental hygiene. He is pretty good. Cons: - Please make sure you ask them if they are in contract with your insurance prior to the treatment to avoid any unwelcome surprises. For instance, they aren't in network with Metlife PPO. I wasn't notified until the cleaning was done even when they had the insurance information since a month and a half ago. I understand that it is the patient responsibility to make sure whether or not the dentist is in network, I never had problems with this before though. I think I was lucky enough until now! Thank God it was just a cleaning that I ended up paying $41 dollar for after the insurance covered some of the outrageous charges(insurance paid them 100% of what they pay to in-network providers). The above indeed opaqued their service, at least to me! That's why I'm knocking off two stars. read more

For example, my niece is visiting out of town for the summer and somehow broke one of her brackets from her braces. I honestly hate the dentist. I am good with everything else BUT the dentist... LUCKILY.... Dr. Lam is a dentist. He makes everything easier from point A-Z. Really nice experience here at star dental, just got my braces taken off, really satisfied with my teeth right now, need to give that credit to Dr. Lam! Also everyone is so nice there, you will feel like home! My sister, dad and I have been going here for nearly 15 years now. Dr. Lam is very knowledgeable and does a great job at keep your teeth in top condition. When I was younger, I got braces here for less than a year, and my teeth are still very straight thanks to the retainer they gave me. When I chipped my front teeth while falling off a bike, he repaired it perfectly and you can't even tell that part of my front teeth are fake. And fillings are always done properly. Everything he does is with great care and attention to detail, so you know you're in good hands.
