I came in for dinner with my partner on 10/11/2026. This was my first time to Black Dog. Our server…read morewas Maddie (this will be relevant in a moment). To be clear the food was above average, and the sauces were very good. However the food was somewhat overpriced, but nothing egregious. My issue and cause for the low rating is the extremely poor service. We were seated immediately after entering the restaurant, as there were plenty of open tables. Our server did not come to take our drink order for 17 minutes. Thinking possibly there might be a large party somewhere or something else going on, we opted to put in an appetizer order at that time as well as our dinner order. Assuming the appetizer would come out first. At this point I should mention where I was seated I had a view of the food waiting for servers to pick it up. As time passed I watched customers come and go. People who came in after us receive their food, and our server began tending bar and having long conversations with bar patrons. At 35 minutes in, she finally checked for our appetizer that I noticed had been sitting in the window for about 10 minutes. It was cold. I asked politely for an update on our food, she said "oh not too long we just got really busy" keep in mind there are still empty tables. Another 10 or so minutes pass and a different server comes along to complement the brand of shirt im wearing. My partner asks if he can get him a drink refill, because our server has disappeared. He was a soild guy. He mentioned his initials were A.M. 15 minutes later an elderly expediter with glasses brings out our food. We begin eating. Halfway through I need a drink refill. Our server is still missing. I try to flag the elderly expediter and he says "ill get to you later" and runs away. I end up flagging a man in a flannel button down that gets me a refill. He was not happy doing it. Maddie the server quickly returns when she sees clean plates and brings the check. I still gave 20%...because I know servers have to survive too. This experience was one of the worst service experiences ive had in a restaurant. Black Dog, do better.

Their sauce is unlike any other BBQ sauce I have ever had and BBQ is my favorite food. It's seriously the best! You have to put sauce on the steak fries. It's just part of it. Their meat is good. It's not the juciest meat ever but it's incredibly good cause they cook on wood. So many people think ribs should fall off the bone but truly good ribs have some bite to them. They should not just fall off the bone. That defeats the whole purpose. The chicken and rib combo is the best. It's a ton of food for a very reasonable price. I like it with hot sauce on it and extra sauce on the fries. Yes, your fries will get soft but they're delicious soaked in that liquid gold. Temper your expectations. This place is not fancy. They do things their own way and it has worked for decades. I pray it never changes. Get a lemon shake up to drink and enjoy

First off, it has a drive through, so we are not talking upscale, but it's not a dive. It's a nice clean place. Pretty small, but quite clean. And we noticed many drive thru and pick up orders! Fountain drinks and many sauce choices to boot. Sauces I tried: Cherry Chipotle: excellent! A little bit spicy, but not enough to deter any but the most sensitive palate. Pineapple Horseradish: fantastic! Oh my. I gotta learn how to make this. Chipotle peach: a good sauce. I didn't rave about it like the first two, but it's good. As wifey said, very good for chicken even though she poured it all over her brisket. She says this may be her fave or that it is tied with my fave - the pineapple horseradish. Mild: a very nice sauce! A little smoky flavor makes it pretty smashingly good. There are a few others that we didn't get. A Habanero Mango, a Hot, and another that I forgot... I got the Redneck Pork Nachos. Verdict: Great! A few too many jalapeño slices, but those are removable. Fries, pulled pork, melted nacho cheese, what could go wrong? Nothing! I was still wanting delicious food, so I ordered a Polish Sausage Sandwich. Now, this was a bit silly as I was pretty full, but I wanted something delicious again. Anyway, it was worth the required waddle to the car afterwards. In fact, just to explain, I wouldn't even get ICE CREAM!!!! That has never happened in my life!!! EVER!!! I've ALWAYS had room for ice cream! Anyway... Oldest got the pulled chicken sandwich. Hard to get much review from her, very short phrases and all. It wasn't enough, so she got another sandwich, brisket this time. The brisket was just as good as the chicken. She couldn't decide which was better. She says it depends on your mood, but both are good. Maybe a slight nod to the chicken because of the crispy edges. Wifey: Wifey got the brisket platter with baked beans and the fries. The brisket was a balanced blend of the moist and lean cuts with little pieces of burnt ends with it. Perfection! The French fries were the real deal sliced potatoes, fried "Jersey Shore" style (IYKYK). What a treat that was for the native Philly girl. The baked beans were next level. They were simmered with brisket and peaches in their famous bbq sauce. Wifey says they were calling to her so she answered the call and she was NOT sorry! They were so good! She was one very happy wifey tonight -y! Overall, it was a great outing to a new place! This might come into rotation in Champaign as a go to place.
